Girls Only!: Volume Two (Girls Only

Rate this book
Jenna, Livvy, Heather, and Manda strive for their best in their respective sports: gymnastics, figure skating, ice-dancing, and downhill skiing. Their ultimate goal: the Olympics. As each girl struggles with life's challenges and rejoices with each triumph, the encouragement of the other Girls Only club members and their faith in God give the girls the moral support needed to push their limits and learn important lessons.

Follow the Dream Livvy misses her mother, who passed away just months ago, and frustration mounts when Livvy's grandmother offers to help but oversteps her boundaries in every way--especially when she starts acting as Livvy's ice-skating coach.

Better Than Best The spirit of competition has consumed Jenna; she's started making enemies, and her friends wonder if she'll ever come back to the Girls Only club.

Photo Perfect When Heather's brother drops her during an ice-dancing competition, Heather goes to extremes to lose weight from her already thin frame.

Star Status Manda is concentrating so hard on winning the Dressel Hills Downhill Classic that she's turned her back on everyone that matters to her--her family, her friends...even God.

Four books packaged as one:

In Follow the Dream Livvy misses her mother and resents her grandmother being involved in everything. She prays about it and realises that her grandmother is only overinvolved because she loves Livvy, so all's well that ends well.

In Better Than the Best Jenna wishes she weren't so short. She prays about it and learns that being short is great for gymnastics, besides which character makes one stand tall.

In Photo Perfect Heather crash-diets for two weeks and loses three pounds, making everyone panic and all but diagnose her with an eating disorder. She prays about it and realises that skating matters more to her than (the possibility of) modelling and that healthy is beautiful.

In Star Status Manda is focused on an upcoming race, and her friends accuse her of not caring about their little club. She prays about it and realises that ambition is not as important as God.

(Are we sensing a theme here?)

Although I'm not particularly interested in the religious side of these books, I more or less knew what I was getting into here. No, what surprised me was the emphasis on the 'Girls Only' club. I didn't read the first set of books in the series, so I'm not really clear on how it formed or what the purpose is, other than for the girls to get together once a week and pray and talk and...not really sure what else. It's odd, because in some ways it creates artificial conflict: the girls can't just say 'hey, I'm super busy this week but can't wait to hang out later' (like most friends do at times); they have to say 'I have to skip the ENTIRE BASIS OF OUR FRIENDSHIP this week, thus calling into question how seriously I take said friendship'. It's a little odd.

For better or for worse, the conflict never really touches the girls' athletics; the books are really too short to have them do more than stumble on a dismount or fail to nail a lutz or whatever in practice before blowing the competition out of the water when it actually matters.

I'm so very many kinds of not the demographic for this, but it was a light read in a week when I'm looking for light reads.

I only read this to see if it got better. Spoiler: it did not! Still sappy and girls acting like they’re dramatic without really knowing how to be dramatic. Again, this’ll work for a younger audience but it didn’t work for me.

Definitely more of a teen book than an adult book. I picked this up in a vintage store and didn't realize that. It's 4 stories in one book. Each story about a different teenage girl.

4.5

I'm really happy that I re-read this book for the third, fourth, or fifth time, because it gave me a sense of "coming home." The "coming home" feeling is a VERY good feeling, especially when you re-read a book from childhood or one of your favorite books. So, coming home feels wonderful. :) happy reading!

The four girls are into more trouble again! But with friends, family and faith they can keep going.

This series has been very enjoyable. The four girls are normal and not some perfect person some book make their heroins out to be.

This is a group of four novellas about four athletic friends; a different girl is focused on in each one, but it combines into one storyline. It's quite cute and family friendly.
