Hip-Healthy Asana: The Yoga Practitioner's Guide to Protecting the Hips and Avoiding SI Joint Pain
The yoga practitioner's essential guide to understanding, preventing, and relieving hip pain in asana practice.
The mind-body benefits of daily yoga practice are unquestionably positive, but as yoga has become more popular, an increasing number of yoga practitioners of all ages are suffering from hip and lower back pain and intense sacroiliac joint (SI) discomfort. The urge to push yourself too far, too fast can result in hip pain or injury. The key in protecting your joints and maintaining healthy hips for the long-term is to cultivate strength and stability rather than focusing primarily on flexibility.
Hip-Healthy Asana is the yoga practitioner’s essential guide to fully understanding, preventing, and relieving hip pain in asana practice, along with practice tips, modifications, and sequences that enhance hip strength and stability for a sustainable practice that can last through every age and stage of life.

I received a ARC for review for my honest opinion.
I quite enjoyed this book and learned a lot about protecting my hips during poses and stretching. As one with spinal injuries my yoga practice is very limited but can still irritate my hips. The author has provided a sensible guide to poses that gently help the hips rather then hinder during practice. I like the book very much and have put the author's suggestions into practice and have found a difference of improvement. I would recommend this book highly to anyone doing a regular yoga practice of any age. Thank you for the opportunity to review .

This is an important work that explains the configuration of our lower backs very well - specifically our *SI joint. I found the forward, introduction, and Part One useful. I hardly glanced at Part 2, as I don't have a home practice; Bikram Yoga - through various joint, back, and other injuries - continues to heal me best. IMO, the term 'Hypermobility' like 'depression' has started to get overused in diagnosis and use in popular culture. (*Sacrailiac join)
Part One, Know your hips, refine your practice includes: What exactly are the hips, tucking the tailbone, hips are not square, stabilizing your joints, listening to your body, the competitive yoga trap, props, what yoga can and can't do, and when joints ware out. The diagrams of the lower back structure were very helpful for me to visualize and help me diagnose an injury I had - and later to just have a better understanding of how my body is built. The tilt of the SI joint was important to me to think about. I'm pretty sure I read about "gapping" first in this book.
I will keep the book handy for unpredictable lower back injuries and irritating little pains and twists. The second part might be glanced through for exercises I may do while I'm in healing mode and taking time off dancing and group yoga. I don't even read about props anymore. Thats just me.
This book would be pretty boring if you did not experience lower back pain - but once I had an SI injury - it became very meaningful and much more dense. There are not any other books that I found dealing specifically with this joint.

I have been hesitant to practice yoga again after hip surgery. This book gives clear suggestions on ways to ease into the poses. I would assume this book would be good for those with hip issues that have not progressed to the stage needing surgery or for those just wanting to keep their hip joints healthy.

Very good guide that goes beyond the idea of "hip opening"

A most useful book for anyone with lower back/hip issues. I have suffered with L4-L5/S1 issues - degenerative disc disease with intermittent radiculopathy (radiating nerve pain) for some years. I have to be very aware and very careful with my yoga and exercise practices so as to not aggravate the situation. Of course, I also want to maintain my physical therapies - use it or lose it as they say. Charlotte Bell has written a very clear and helpful guide for people like me. I look forward to putting her suggestions and advice into practice. Well-written and recommended.
