Shifter's Regime #1

Hacking the Consequences

Rate this book
Over fifty years before, Vincentius Goldstein agreed to join the Shifter Council with the express intention of bringing their technology into the future. After all, he’d had fun hacking into it and knew it wasn’t secure. He’s done that, and now finds the almost daily meetings and constant infighting trying his patience. Vincentius prefers the seclusion of his computer room. When he discovers someone hacking into his system, his excitement is stirred for the first time in decades. After figuring out where the hacker is located, Vincentius sends a council investigator after him. To his shock, when the investigator returns with the hacker, a small guinea fowl shifter named Cho, Vincentius recognizes the man as his mate. Even with the mate-pull, Cho fears him. After all, Vincentius had ordered Cho kidnapped and taken away from the safety of his flock mates. Can Vincentius figure out how to win the favor of his captive, or will he lose the best thing to happen to him in over three hundred years?

A great start to a new series, ‘Hacking the Consequences’ clearly builds on some of the existing paranormal worlds created by Charlie Richards – mainly the ‘Wolves of Stone Ridge’ with one of the main characters, Cho, coming straight from there. While this fact is obvious in the way some of the secondary characters are mentioned, there is enough background information for someone like me who has not read the complete series. I did not feel lost, and I liked the focus on the shifter council and the shenanigans that are likely to happen at that level. It promises much intrigue – what with hackers, councilmen going rogue, and hidden alliances that will need to be uncovered.

The usual from Charlie

A nice palate cleanser between heavier reads.

Many of Charlie Richards stories are formulaic and easy reads.

I stopped reading her stories a couple of years ago for that very reason.

The writing hasn’t changed but the editing is better.

So I didn't REALLY take 5 days to read this.. I just skipped it for like 3 1/2 days.. I am getting closer and closer to just giving this series up... LONG time coming... not quite sure if I'm ready yet.

There's no real originality anymore. My Mate, My Human, My Lover. Start the bonding process. Have a little angst in the way... Its like the same shit, with different names and different animals but the core is always the same with the 'small' details getting changed up. I'm getting real harsh, but I'm keeping it real for ME.

I HAD to take a break cus I've read this like a thousand times it feels like. They aren't carbon copies but in some ways they feel like it... One thing that stood out to me cus it doesn't fit in and match the rest of the story is that Vincentius (pretentious kind of name to me) took years to feel comfortable in the presence of powerful shifters. Being that he is a hacker and this comment, I actually thought he was a submissive.. scratch that.. non dominant shifter. That is incorrect. He's a lion shifter, so not a non dominant. Clearly I interpreted it wrong but that was my first thought.

Another is that he got hacked. He got hacked by his mate. His mate that was in captivity for years and part of the bird clan living on Stone Ridge territory. He was shown how to do things by others just like everyone in the flock but he was able to hack into a hacker's computer? Imagine the sarcasm dripping off of me, tone of voice and everything.. Are. you. fucking. kidding. me? No you are not.. cus that is how the cookie crumbles and the world of make believe and I can make anything happen just cuz I fucking feel like it and if you don't like it...

I try not to use really bad language in my reviews... in my head is a whole nother story! But this is what is coming out today....

The funny thing is... I STILL love FINDING BALANCE #5, GOADING THE ENFORCER #6, and THE VAMPIRE'S SPECIAL LOVER #16

Facts:
I have NOT read a single book from the Stone Ridge Universe series and was only a bit curious from time to time... may go there someday?
This was a short, entertaining read!
I thought Cho was absolutely adorable!
I am not surprised by the lack of depth in the storyline (classic Charlie Richards)...
Also, I wasn't surprised by the amazing characters (classic Charlie Richards)!!!
Yes, I basically skimmed the sex scenes... that one is on me, though not Charlie! *grin*
And last, but not least... That sure was one abrupt ending... *headdesk* ;p

Moving on to see what is happening next in The Cat that Snared the Tom...

This was ok. The story itself didn't really go anywhere and left me with a fair few unanswered questions. 24 character names were introduced in the first two chapters so its very confusing! Not sure I will read the next in the series.

A new aspect to the universe

This is an interesting new side of the Shifters universe Richards has built to show. The Council is oft mentioned and players from it come out but never has the more inner workings been at the center of the story. But following council member and hacker Vincentius as he meets his mate Cho, the Council becomes very central.

Vincentius is quite the workaholic and sometimes forgets social niceties being a hacker and a bit socially awkward. Cho spent years captive to the scientists and doesn't remember life before, but he has embraced learning. Part of that learning has been hacking and his own social awkwardness lends itself well to the hacking world. Together the two pair up well, with an ability to understand each other and the ease of working together. They have plenty of work to come after this book and I hope we see the pair again.

The only part I found a bit jarring was Cho's naivety. He is so very innocent and unknowing of things that at times it almost seems childish, though it is tempered with very adult knowledge. I understand this is supposed to be because he doesn't know the world after captivity but it sometimes made him seem too young for mating. I enjoyed when he proved otherwise.

OMG I love Cho!

New series and who is the first to find themselve in trouble but Cho. Our zany and often naked bird shifter. He is kidnapped and put into a locked room in a councilmans house. All for trying get to get information on a friend.

Our councilmans is worried that the strange little shifter is up to no good, that is until they meet man to guinea fowl. Mates now all they have to do is figure out if they can trust each other? Throughout this story i laughed and shook my head at the different situations and comments that came from Cho.

A must read! Another hit from Charlie Richards!

Sweet read. I was just looking for some light novellas to binge. I read some of Charlie Richards books before but haven't for some time now. I now remember why I only could read so many at one time. The, I can only call it gender roles, are very dominant in the books. But maybe it was just my luck in picking exactly the ones where they are so pronounced.

Still a nice read and recommend, if you are on the lookout for something easily digestible, short, sweet, with a little mystery on the side in the shifter genre.

Hacking the Consequences

I enjoyed this book. The characters are fascinating. It had mystery and suspense. I wish it was longer. I cannot wait for the next book.

Cho finds his mate

Good tie in with stone ridge series. It wasn’t a complete story. Story just stopped. This is the set up but need to finish it with lead in to next.

I have read all of Charlie Richards' Stone Ridge Universe books (all four series that intermingle into this Universe) and this new series just add to the greatest of this Universe. Cho and Vinnie's story is a great start to this new series. I fell in love with Cho's character in the previous stories where he was a sub-character and to see him finally get his own story is perfect. Charlie Richards knows how to write paranormal mm love stories that show you a balance of love, relati0nship and paranormal while never forget the human side.

Looking forward to many more books from her to come.

This falls back to the Charlie Richards we all know and love! It follows that lovely fated mate trope with a bit of quirky humor and some mellow smexy times.

We get to see a newly developing branch of the shifter world – the flock of odd birds who briefly resided with Declan’s wolves, is now branching out! Some of the council men we’ve met before return and we get a new series as a result!

This is the kind of Charlie story I love and I know fans of hers will as well.

This story continues in the Wolves of Stone Ridge world.

Cho is caught hacking into the Council's computers and brought to Vincentius' house for questioning, where he meets his mate. Trust issues and problems with poor interpersonal skills are soon overcome as bigger problems arise.
The story of the corrupt ex-Councilman Paraben Krakow is not finished.

The change in location allows for the introduction of a lot of new characters. I'm hoping the Council Enforcers and Investigators get stories.

So let’s recap shall we? Rescued avian shifters more to Stone Ridge, entire vampire clan/family moves from Russia to America so one of their bird shifter mates can be near them, and now they all move away from Stone Ridge and across the country? Okay then. I’d be a little pissed if I were those vamps.

Anyway, I already thought I’m going to enjoy this new series. I imagine there will be lots of intrigue.

reread
On a massive re-re-read of Charlie Richards' Stone Ridge world series. As stand alones these short stories and novellas are usually a 3/5 , With talented use of stereotypes, quick short plot arcs and descriptive writing they are fun to read. There is the occasional clunker coming in at a 2 due to gaps and unfinished mini plot elements.
However, when read in series, they become a bit more as the world elements and overarching plots add depth.

Great start to a new spin off

What's better than a hacker finding his mate? Two hackers finding each other! I loved Cho's story. The flock of fliers that Stone Ridge wolves rescued from the scientists are some of my favorite characters.

Great book by a favorite author. Love that it's in the same universe as her other shifter books. I love interconnected books and characters.

So many unanswered questions. The story just ends in what feels like the middle. Seems to be a theme with this author lately.
