I read this solely because #ReadHarder prompt 11 required I read a book of manga
I actually quite enjoyed it and was not a happy reader when it came to an end so startlingly. This is book 4 in a series though so that is to be expected.
Poor little Ponta swaps between being a dog and being a human, and struggles as both. It is a daft story line really but is actually quite interesting in the commentary about humans and their chase for happiness.
When Mirai Iwaki takes Ponta to the beach human's inability to simply grasp life and enjoy it is so starkly illustrated in the jarring connection between the two.
I do find the contrast between illustration style and the content quite difficult. The female characters are so little and childlike and the male characters so much older looking it made me uncomfortable. Combined with content and images with a sexual suggestion makes the contrast even more uncomfortable. But I think this is part of manga and maybe I am just a prude.
But yeah - I would read another manga should one appear in front of me, but I am not sure I would go out and spend money on new ones.

August 2, 2011Wow, the drama is really kicking into high gear in this book! Poor Ponta! She keeps being misunderstood by everyone. I was really disappointed in Mirai, after he lied to her once, then he broke his date and lied to her again. Even though it was to help Hana out of a dangerous situation, he shouldn't have gone without explaining it to Ponta. It was really interesting to see how Ponta transferred her feelings to the toy ball Mirai gave her after she ran away. It seems like the manga-ka knows how to get inside a dog's head! I felt really bad for Mirai, even though it was all his fault for not being honest with her, both with Hana, and with going to the beach when he knew there was going to be a typhoon, just to assuage his guilt. The very ending was heart-wrenching! I'm sure Ponta has to be alright (there are more books named after her, after all!) but it was painful to see them trying to get to each other finally, only to miss each other by a hair, and then the car accident - that was a lot of blood! How will it turn out? I'm hooked on this drama, I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!

Poor Ponta. Being only a dog, she just doesn't know how to handle all of the emotions she is feeling. I know that dogs sometime hurt themselves by chewing on their paws when they are worried about something, but I didn't like seeing it in this book. It is done tastefully, but I still find it a little disturbing. Being a dog lover, I hate to see animal in pain.
Throughout this story, Ponta wears pigtails, making her look even younger. I swear, she looks like she is 10 years old, and is dating a full grown man. Hmmm, something a little strange in that.
Still, the artwork is well-drawn (I just wish Ponta looked older) and the story is quite good. And talk about a surprise ending! Wow . . . you're just not going to believe it. It is a real cliffhanger. Because of this, I look forward to seeing what is going to happen in Guru Guru Pon-Chan: Volume 5.

Rereading as I find these volumes at local used book sellers. This series was quite cute and I just couldn't get it out of my head as a kid. Still love the series despite how weird it can be lol
