An Artisan Lovestyle

Rate this book
Are you ‘living’ your life or just living your life?

Elsa Clairmont was widowed barely five years after marrying her childhood sweetheart. She has struggled to come to terms with the loss and, six years later, has almost ceased to live herself. She does just enough to get by.

Danny Delaney is the ultimate ‘Mr Nice Guy’. He’s kind, caring and sweet. A talented artist in his teens, his abusive mother ruined his career in art and he turned his back on his exceptional gift. Now, he does just enough to get by.

On New Year’s Eve, both Danny and Elsa die in unrelated accidents.

Thanks to some poker playing shenanigans, Elsa’s husband Harry, and Danny’s old Art teacher, William, manage to orchestrate a deal with Death that allows Danny and Elsa to live for one more year on the condition they both agree to complete three tasks.

They have until the last chime of Big Ben on the 31st December to fulfil their quests.

If they succeed, they stay in the world of the living.

If they should fail however…

‘An Artisan Lovestyle’ is a story of personal growth and self-discovery as two people find themselves forced to make overdue changes in their lives, changes in other people’s lives, and all with the added challenge of finding true love before their time runs out.

Will they do it?

Can they do it?

After all, it’s a matter of Life or Death…

Kiltie Jackson spent her childhood years growing up in Scotland. Most of these early years were spent in and around Glasgow although for a short period of time, she wreaked havoc at a boarding school in the Highlands.

By the age of seventeen, she had her own flat which she shared with a couple of cats for a few years while working as a waitress in a cocktail bar (she’s sure there’s a song in there somewhere!) and serving customers in a fashionable clothing outlet before moving down to London to chalk up a plethora of experience which is now finding its way into her writing.

Once she’d wrung the last bit of fun out of the smoky capital, she moved up to the Midlands and now lives in Staffordshire with one grumpy husband and another six feisty felines.

Her little home is known as Moggy Towers even though, despite having plenty of moggies, there are no towers! The cats kindly allow her and Mr Mogs to share their home as long as the mortgage continues to be paid.

Since the age of three, Kiltie has been an avid reader although it was many years later before she decided to put pen to paper – or fingers to keyboard – to begin giving life to the stories in her head. Her debut novel was released in September 2017 and her fourth book was a US Amazon bestseller in Time Travel Romance.

Kiltie loves to write fiery and feisty female characters and puts the blame for this firmly on the doorsteps of Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables and George Kirrin from The Famous Five.

When asked what her best memories are, Kiltie will tell you:

1. Queuing up overnight outside the Glasgow Apollo to buy her Live-Aid ticket.

2. Being at Live-Aid.

3. Winning an MTV competition to meet Bon Jovi in Sweden.

(Although, if Mr Mogs is in earshot, the latter is changed to her wedding day.)

Her main motto in life used to be “Old enough to know better, young enough not to care!” but that has since been replaced with “Too many stories, can't type fast enough!”

All books are available in ebook & paperback through Amazon.

5☆ A Cosy Uplifting Read

An Artisan Lovestyle is a feel good uplifting read about second chances.

This is my second book I have read by Kiltie and they just keep getting better.

When Danny and Elsa both die on New Years Eve who would ever think they would get a second chance.
But only because 'Death' is involved.
He will grant them a years life providing they complete three tasks within the year.

This is a very different book to the normal books I read, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's nice to read something very different.

Death was a character exactly how I expected him to be, a sly, lil cocky, party animal and I really liked his character.

I don't normally like supernatural elements especially in romance/ cosy books, but it really worked. The characters are really well written. It was a feel good uplifting read, about second chances, grabbing hold of life, it had humour, witt and emotion.

If you enjoy cosy uplifting books, that have a supernatural twist that is light hearted yet makes you feel warm. Then you will love An Artisan Lovestyle.

Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Hi, an Artisan lifestyle is book 2 in the Lovestyle series and some familiar faces are back ( hurrrrahhh ), the book however can be read as a stand alone or as part of the series
Elsa and Danny both have complex lives due to their pasts, both have unrelated accidents on New Years Eve and die......one in a car accident, one due to a cardiac arrest.....but then they both experience something...and are brought back to life.....what do they do with that experience and how will it impact their lives, they should be dead but have been given a second chance....with certain goals to achieve
What follows is their lives for the next 12 months, what they do, how, why and with who and how it impacts and changes their lives....until the next New Years Eve when the decision will be made if they have reached these set goals! ( via freckles on their wrists!!)
Heavy stuff? Yes...but not the way this author tells it, in the style of the first book the writing is bright, breezy, comforting, welcoming, hilarious and serious when either is needed and warm
Even the character of Sandra, who is sooooo bad, is written to make you smile...all the characters are easy to ‘meet’ and ‘get to know’ and fit very well with the story
An intriguing idea for a book with a subtle yet true message, one of those books you really enjoy reading and can pick up and get straight back into it
Unique and very enjoyable

I was just blown away by this book! I loved how unique it was with the paranormal aspects and the adventures the characters endured. Man, all I wanted was more! As many may know because of my recent post, I have been experiencing a trauma. Well this story gave me the ability to escape from my current reality and have some fun. The characterization is fantastic and had a great plot. Even though this story was unique and filled with adventures that we probably could never face, I felt that I could relate to the characters and felt that reading this story made a fun new reality that I didn’t want to leave. Even though this story is the second novel in the series, it definitely can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend this book and I am so glad I received the opportunity to read this Must Read!
Many thanks to the author and Rachel's Random Resources for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review. I am so appreciative of this opportunity and all views expressed are my own.

With the release of Kiltie Jackson’s book 3 in the Lovestyle series I wanted to read book two as hadn’t yet read it!
(I know! You say... Why did I wait?)

I have to say it was just as amazing as I knew it would be!

I love the way the author created characters that had me rooting for them from the beginning.. They are so well formed it’s like remembering memories of friends. The cross over of characters is brilliant, hearing about previous characters in this book while the main characters have their own book in the series.

I wasn’t sure how I’d connect with the storyline as I’m not very arty but it certainly didn’t put me off. It brought back lovely memories of my father painting in his craft room where I grew up. After I finished the book, I looked up the artist Jeff Rowland and his work is amazing. The author has captured his talent perfectly within the book and the way I pictured the artwork was how it is portrayed in the originals.
A brilliant concept that brought me tears and happiness and a brilliant sequel and second novel!

After reading Kiltie's debut novel, A Rock 'n' Roll Lovestyle I couldn't wait to read her next book and she certainly didn't let me down with the next instalment in the Lovestyle series!

Elsa Clairmont and Danny Delaney don't know each other but when they both die on New Year's Eve it sets off a whole chain of events. Thanks to Elsa's husband Harry and Danny's old art teacher William, who can often be found playing poker and eating crisps with Death, Elsa and Danny get a year to complete three tasks and possibly change their futures.

Following Elsa and Danny through the course of the year was an emotional journey. Elsa deeply misses her husband and Danny didn't have a happy childhood but seeing them change and grow as individuals as the story unfolds was an absolute delight to read.

The story in interspersed with chapters where we catch up with Death, William and Harry as they enjoy their boys nights. William and Harry quite often get the better of Death and mess up his plans but Death is used to their ways and often just replies with a roll of his eyes as he sees his well laid plans go awry.

I absolutely loved this book and when I finished it I felt like I'd been wrapped in a big hug as it gave me a real case of the warm and fuzzies! All of the characters are so believable -including Death - I mean, don't knock what you don't know right - and I really wanted Elsa and Danny to achieve their goals and get the lives that they both deserved. There was however, one character who I could have quite happily slapped round the face with a wet fish! I won't divulge who it was as I don't want to spoil anything for you all, but I always think that having a character that provokes that kind of reaction is the sign of a great writer and I'm sure if you read the book you'll soon realise who I'm talking about.

Ms Jackson has written a wonderfully heart-warming story about coming to terms with grief, moving on, overcoming your fears and the strength and support we gain from others. As for throwing in a hint of paranormal in the form of Death and departed loved ones into the mix - to me this was a stroke of genius! I'm all for the thought of loved ones on the other side looking out for us and for me this added a whole new dimension to this brilliant book. The story flowed seamlessly and I found myself fully engrossed in the lives of my new found best friends.

It doesn't matter if you haven't read A Rock 'n' Roll Lovestyle, as An Artisan Lovestyle can easily be read as a standalone, but I'd hate to think of you all missing out on two fantastic books so I would definitely recommend that you read them both!

An injection of the 'feel-good' factor

A beautifully told heart-warming tale of two people who turn their lives around against all odds.

Jackson has a gift for multi-layered believable characters that you can't help but root for, and an intriguingly original storyline.

This one will stay with you long after you leave the last page.

An Artisan Lovestyle by Kiltie Jackson
Contemporary Romance Fiction
Approx. 450 Pages

I read A Rock n Roll Lovestyle back in December and loved it and was excited to hear that Kiltie Jackson was writing a second novel! I think when anyone writes a second novel or the next book in a series there is always doubt in the readers mind as to will it be as good.

Well ladies and gents I am here to say that I thought it was absolutely fabulous!
KJ has an effortless and beautiful writing style and the magic touch to take you to the places she visits! London, Paris, a garden, an art gallery, you feel like you are almost watching a movie instead of reading a book. The way she weaves from one character to another makes you feel like you know them. You become invested wishing and hoping for all good things to those that deserve and maybe some not so nice things to those that don’t.

I laughed, got teary eyed and swooned throughout this little gem and hoping that KJ is currently working her magic fingers for a third novel!

I’m going to keep this spoiler free but if this book is more than a love story, it’s about making your life count and changing which we all know is hard to do. No one likes change but I highly suggest if you see this book don’t pass it by because you think romance, not my thing as sometimes change is good!

After falling in love with Kiltie’s first book A Rock n Roll Lovestyle last year I did wonder how she could top it. Well I didn’t have to worry, this book was just brilliant! Don’t worry if you haven’t read the first book, this will read perfectly well as a standalone. Some characters from the first book pop up but there’s enough background for readers who haven’t read the first to be able to follow.

Elsa is widowed and has lost her spark, she’s struggling without Harry and despite some years passing she’s just thinking about him. Danny just does enough to get by, he seems to be stuck in a rut and doesn’t know how to get out of it. On New Years Eve, both Elsa and Danny die in different accidents. Harry and Danny’s old art teacher strikes them a deal which Death agrees with – they must both complete three tasks over the coming year in order to stay alive.

Right, that’s all I’m saying about the plot, it sounds a bit crazy and far-fetched but Kiltie has written it so brilliantly I was able to fully believe the plot. I loved the characters, they are all so well-written and have depth that I fully believed I had made some friends in them. Death was my favourite character, he was funny and loved to get drunk while playing poker, who’d have thought that?!

This book had me hooked, I got involved in the lives of Danny and Elsa, I just had to read on to see if they’d complete the tasks. I loved the theme of second chances running throughout the book as well as personal growth and discovering things about themselves. This book is perfect if you want uplifting, realising you can do those things you’ve always wanted to and it was a wonderful feel-good read.

An Artisan Lovestyle is a warm, funny and well-written book that is not only funny but will also pull at your heart-strings as well. The characters are brilliant, except for one! But they’re all fabulously written that I even enjoyed reading about the character I didn’t like! I’m so excited to read the next book by Kiltie, she’s a fabulous talent and deserves all the recognition for her excellent books.

I’m officially a “Lovestyle Series” fan. I’m always worried when another book comes out in a series when I really loved the first one. Well this author has done it again and I loved so many things about it. I feel like these characters are so well rounded and life-like, that it feels as if I could bump into them on the street. You really get to see Elsa and Danny grow throughout the book and transform. I loved how we got to pop in on occasion and see how characters were doing from book one in the series. In all honesty I was biting my nails right up until the end with the way these characters interacted with each other. I cannot wait to read more in this series and delve deeper into some other characters. I could keep going but then I would be revealing all spoilers. If you love chick-lit mixed with some paranormal romance elements, this is a must read. Also, I do recommend reading the first one, "A Rock 'N' Roll Lovestyle".

Kiltie Jackson has done it again, but this time even better.

I love the way Jackson injects such warmth, humour and reality into her stories (even this one, with it's obvious element of unreality!) The characters are so real that I feel as if I know them. It was great to see the return of characters already known and loved from her first book and the new characters introduced were just as well-crafted, with some designed to make you love them and some destined to be detested. Jackson knows how to draw you into her world and lose you in it for the duration and you can't help but invest yourself in the lives that she is weaving around you.

If you enjoyed 'A Rock 'n' Roll Lovestyle' then you're going to adore 'An Artisan Lovestyle'. Book out a whole day because you're not going to want to put this one down once you pick it up.

My review for An Artisan Lovestyle by Kiltie Jackson.

I completely loved Kilties first book, so I was excited, yet a little nervous to read this book, I was concerned it wouldn’t live up to the first one but those fears were completely unnecessary!
From the beginning I was hooked, a clever story line with characters I liked and cared about, some not so much, but that was definitely in a good way😉
At times it made be gasp in shock, other times roar with laughter and most definitely it moved me too. The topic of the book is something I hold dear, and I loved the way it was dealt with, with humour, thought and at time tears.
I sat all afternoon in my sunny garden, reading this, savouring every page. The memory has just made me smile!
It was the perfect follow up and I’m hoping there will be another soon!

Kiltie, Kiltie, Kiltie! I loved it. after reading Rock n Roll Lovestyle I knew once I heard that Kiltie was writing a second book I would have to have it.

Needless to say I wasn't disappointed. Kiltie has a way of writing characters with warmth and persona. I genuinely rooted for Danny and Elsa in their lives and hoped for the best for them both. Equally Kiltie writes a bad character really well, she had me loathing one in particular.

Her writing flows naturally and has an element of easy humour with it. Enjoyable, Light and Wonderful reading at it's best.

How does an author follow up an awesome debut novel? By writing an even better second one! Honestly, I was worried before starting An Artisan Lovestyle because I feared I'd be let down. I really enjoy Kiltie's first book that much. However, from the very beginning I knew this one was going to be special. I mean, how can a book where we find Death playing a game of poker be anything bad? "Artisan" has it all: humor, tears, joys, sadness, and of course love. In the end, this wound up being just like a modern fairy tale really. I loved this book!

One of the things I love about the growth in romance publishing is not only the very broad scope of sub-genres, but also the books that bring an occasional ‘wow’ factor. No, I don’t mean sizzling sex scenes, or super-hot heroes, welcome though they may be. I’m talking about writers who come up with a plot that is way beyond the standard and slightly formulaic, albeit thoroughly enjoyable, romances. This book is one that has that ‘wow’ factor. Who in their right mind would contemplate writing a romance that includes Death, two dead men, and Purgatory/Hades’ Waiting Rooms? Not only that, but make Death such an insanely funny and completely bonkers character that you practically wet yourself laughing?

Well, Kiltie Jackson has.

Kiltie writes with passion and enthusiasm, and clearly loves to toy with her audience. Romance in this book is multi-faceted, and not in any way, shape, or form clear-cut, nor is the road to achieving it conventional or straightforward. It crosses age, genders, and subjects. Both Elsa and Danny are in love with art, for example. It’s hard to write this review, not because I can’t think of what to say, quite the opposite, but because I don’t want to give anything away. I want readers expectations to be as teased, thwarted, and challenged as mine were.
Elsa is stuck. Stuck in habitual grief, stuck in life, stuck in a job she detests. Her only joy is her dog, and her love for him is what brings about her demise. Danny is stuck too. Stuck in a life forced upon him through deception, stuck with a job he has little enthusiasm for, stuck with the girlfriend from hell. Neither has the energy or strength to make changes, neither can see a way to move forward to better things. It’s easier to just accept the life you have, not rock the boat, and to forget foolish dreams. Their respective ruts are as deep as the Mariana Trench!
Sitting in Hades or Purgatory (call it what you will) Elsa and Danny meet briefly while waiting to be told what to do. They are each offered a second chance at life but with conditions attached. Who wouldn’t want that? Even if you fail to complete the tasks, wouldn’t you grab the opportunity to say and do the things you should have but didn’t? To strike out for those dreams long suppressed and locked away? Second chances don’t come around often and grabbing them with both hands is exactly what Elsa and Danny do.
I adored the twists and turns, the edge-of-the-seat guessing game that went on right to the very end. I started to read thinking I knew the outcome. Then I wasn’t sure. Next, I was trying to second guess the author, trying to figure out how she’d turn readers’ expectations on their head. Finally, I told my brain to shut up and get on with reading and enjoying it.
I did. And then some.

The characters in this book are so well-defined that I recognised them instantly. Some you want to hug, others you want to hang out with, and quite possibly two you want to kill, on a dark night, out at sea…! Some relationships within the book are beautifully written and portrayed, exhibiting love in all its infinite variety. Others are clearly cut with a scalpel, sharp-edged and lethal.
Kiltie has a talent for using humour to put across an otherwise complicated issue. She distils it to its essence and feeds it through her characters in such a way that you don’t realise it’s happening. For example, Sukie and Charles carry enormous emotional burdens. Death, grief, fear; it’s not just Elsa and Danny who experience these things and suffer the consequences of them. Some cope, but some fall at the first hurdle and it takes a special person to pick them up. Sometimes its just doing the right thing at the right time and giving a helping hand. This is where Elsa and Danny are at their best.
Elsa is lovely, and I whooped with delight at the office scene. Once she starts to break out from her self-imposed prison, she bursts into her new life. I can best describe it as a beige woman unexpectedly reflecting the all the colours of the rainbow. As she finds her way, she is surrounded by family and friends who love and support her. Danny is the ultimate genuinely kind and caring guy. He is honourable to the point of self-destruction, but he is also a hero. While he had the misfortune to be the talented child in a family that cares little for anything and was brow-beaten down by a mother who uses him, he has great friends. Nigel and Guy are wonderful; warm, funny, and compassionate. Their relationship is delightful.
I was on tenterhooks hoping that perhaps what I thought was going to happen, wouldn’t. It isn’t a roller-coaster ride, but it is a bit of an edge-of-the-seat tale. The outcome, after a series of tantalising near-misses and teasing ‘sliding door’ scenarios, left me exhausted and exhilarated at the same time.
This is a beautiful emotional and moving story, but utterly hilarious too.

Wow, so this is a bit of a departure from Kiltie’s first novel, A Rock ‘n’ Roll Lovestyle, which I enjoyed reading at the end of last year. If you haven’t picked up that book, set in the snowy delights of a wintry Salzburg, I can highly recommend it. The author has taken an unexpected turn in the realms of the supernatural this time with the premise that the two protagonists have been saved from death (small ‘d’) for one year by the machinations of their two deceased saviours and their gambling games with Death (capital ‘D’). a situation they could make permanent if they make some drastic changes to their unsatisfactory lives before next New Year’s Eve. If not, it is curtains permanently.

An outlandish idea but boy does she manage to pull it off with panache. This book is a delight from start to finish and I totally bought in to the story and was rooting for both Danny and Elsa to succeed and carve out the happy futures that were eluding them but they both so heartily deserved.

It took my a while to gel with the main character in the last book, but I did not have the same issue this time. I was invested in the story from the off and warmed to both Danny and Elsa immediately. I think this is testament to how much the author has learnt and matured as an author from her debut. She launches into this story with so much poise and confidence this time that you can’t help but be carried along with it to such an extent that even the supernatural elements flow with a naturalness and normality that you can’t help but but in to. It also helps that there is a huge dose of humour and warmth infused throughout that makes it a joy to read.

There are some wonderful characters in the novel. Death is a delight, if that isn’t an oxymoron, and I was chuckling out loud at every scene he was in. Sukie and Peter from book one return, and I really enjoyed seeing how their lives had moved on. Sukie is a brilliant character, so ballsy and down-to-earth, despite her situation (excuse me for being a little cryptic, I don’t want to include any spoilers for anyone who hasn’t read Kiltie’s first book). I think my favourite scene in the whole book was the one in the library at her birthday party. I get the feeling that there may be a little (or even a lot) or the author in this character and you can tell she enjoys writing her, it shines from the pages.

One of the characters, and I won’t say which one but it is easy to know who I am talking about if you read it, is possibly the most appalling, loathsome person I have ever had the misfortune to meet between the pages of a novel but they are also brilliantly written and great fun – we all love a good villain don’t we? All of the characters in this book are a joy to read. Some of them are very OTT, but in a way that fits in with the book, and they all feel like they could exist (well. maybe not Death but I’d like to imagine he could!). The main two characters, Danny and Elsa, were fabulous people to carry a book, likeable but not nauseatingly so, so it was easy to wish them a happy ending. Elsa in particular had enough edge to make her really interesting and a modern woman, not a swooning drip.

There are a lot of relevant themes running through this book. Loss and coming to terms with that; lost chances and it never being too late to do those things you always wished you had; finding out who you really are and working to become the best and truest version of yourself; never giving up hope and grabbing those chances when they come along with both hands because life is short. It gives you a surprising amount to think about for a book in this genre and it left me at the end with a lump in my throat and a very satisfied feeling.

I have never read Kiltie's first book, this is the first book I read of hers and I'm don't even mind, because even thought it's the second book in the series it can be read as a standalone. And the only problem I got was that I wanted to read "A Rock 'n' Roll Lovestyle".

When I read the blurb my first thought was that this was an unique that on the second chance in life and the all Death aspect of a book with some paranormal components. Plus I have never read anything like that and I was curious. Once I saw the cover I had this feeling that I was going to read a memoir or was listen to my grandma talk about her past while we were looking at photos.

Let me explain what I mean by that, when I was child my grandparents would tell me about their lives, about how their life went because of their decisions, how they learn about life from their mistakes and by trying to follow what they thought as right, how they grow up. That's what felt like while a was reading this book. In some ways it was like reading how people learn, change, grab every opportunity and try and do their best and live their lives the best they can.

As I kept reading, I would see Danny and Elsa just grab that new chance to live again. The way Kiltie wrote her characters made me connect with them, I felt like Danny and Elsa were part of my family and I was listening about her life-story and seeing them go through the motions of life, seeing them seize every opportunity and learning about letting go and begging to live again. I was rooting for them to succeed in accomplish their goals and the tasks. I was patiently waiting to see them happy because I knew they deserved it.

Even though the paranormal feel and the succeed in fulfilling their quests/tasks was quite unique, the romance was warming, the development of the characters felt real and the wonderful storytelling made the book so much intriguing, eye-opening and just fun to read.

The characters were fun and there were a lot of funny moments, especially when they involved Death, because I was not expecting that. From the very first few pages, I know I would be laughing and having fun. The balance between all the aspects in the book gave the characters a good setting and it made the plot light.

Kiltie was able not only to create and give voice to amazing character that we end up feeling connected to, but she was also able to write characters that we end up loving to hate. And we all know that we have to have those characters in books sometimes because they make the journey of reading so much richer.

The book talks about a lot of aspects. It's about life, second chances, living with all the problems that the waves of life bring us. It's about loss and coming to terms with that new reality, and I can connect with that. It's about finding ourselves again and becoming the best version of ourselves. It's about never giving up and keep fighting and grabbing every new chance we get. And everything, like a good memoir, or a good day spent with your family listening to old stories, it gives you a lot to think about. But that's life!

"An Artisan Lovestyle" is a warm, funny and very well-written book that I definitely recommend to my friends, family and followers.

An Artisan Lovestyle has the most wonderful and quirky beginning; who would have thought 'Death' like playing poker and getting drunk! If you are already thinking that this book may not be for you then stop; I thought that but I have to say I loved it.  This is so much more than a romantic comedy, this book is about Carpe Diem, and living everyday as if it was your last, as it could be.

The plot is narrated by Elsa and Danny with interluding chapters by Death, William and Harry.  Elsa is a character who elicits your empathy, widowed in her twenties and finding it hard to move forward as Harry had been her childhood sweetheart.  But, her brush with death makes her realise that after seven years she has to reclaim her life and find out who she is as a single person.  Danny is in a different predicament, he is in a job he doesn't really like, with a girl who he is ambivalent towards, and he gave up his dream to support his alcoholic and abusive mother.  Again, he has the chance to reclaim his life, return to his art and build a new future.  Elsa and Danny are like ships in the night in that they share many acquaintances but always just see to miss each other.  Both of their circumstances and lives are so real and ordinary; they represent so many people who have lost someone and find it hard to move on and those who, for whatever reason, give up their dreams for a job that pays the bills. There is also wonderful supporting cast; Suki and her rock star husband Pete who I loved for being so down to earth, Guy who is cat mad and Danny's best friend and the repulsive, money grabbing, horrible Sandra, Danny's girlfriend.  These characters will soon become your friends, with the exception of Sandra, and make you laugh and cry at times, sometimes in frustration.

Who would have thought that the character of Death would be the one to inject humour in this book, but he had me laughing out loud.  As Harry, William, and Death follow Elsa and Danny on their journey Death has some great one liners, and the image of him dressing up and singing is brilliant; very clever writing from Kiltie Jackson. Kiltie manages to take, what at first seems a bit of a bizarre plot line and turn it into a real page turner of a book that you can't put down.  It has a charm to it, Kiltie brings the characters and places to life, as if you know them, and this is important in a book as you feel invested and care about what happens and thus enjoy the book more.  I hadn't realised there was a previous book, A Rock and Roll Lovestyle, but you don't need to have read that to enjoy this book.

I am really glad I got the opportunity to be part of the blog tour for An Artisan Lovestyle, as if  I am completely honest, if I had seen the cover before I read the blurb, I may not have read it; the cover is a little twee for me and the book is far from twee.  So please don't be put off by the cover or the quirky plot, this is a wonderful read full of emotion, and memorable characters (some for the wrong reasons).  So, follow Elsa and Danny and 'Seize the Day', enjoy your life and add this book to your tbr pile.

Although I read a fairly eclectic range of books, I tend to be drawn to darker fiction so when I'm given the opportunity to read something a bit more lighthearted I always feel it's a bit of a risk as to whether I'll enjoy it. I was intrigued by the sound of An Artisan Lovestyle, however and couldn't resist giving it a chance.
I'm very glad I did because I so enjoyed this heartwarming novel. We first meet Danny and Elsa before they die and I was immediately drawn to them both. Danny is the archetypal nice guy and at the start of the novel it would seem that the old adage that they finish last holds true. Having given up on his dreams to become an artist in order to take care of his alcoholic and abusive mother and equally wasted brother, he lives an unfulfilled life and has the girlfriend from hell. Meanwhile Elsa's life has stagnated too. Widowed five years previously she remains stuck in the grief cycle and has been unable to move on. It's clear she deserves much more though, she is a kind and caring woman, who looks after her elderly neighbour and dotes on her Labrador, Puddle - the last link to her husband. When both Danny and Elsa die on New Year's Eve it would seem that they were both destined to end their lives without ever achieving what they were capable of. Luckily for them Death loses a game of poker and so has to agree to a deal with Elsa's husband, Harry and Danny's art teacher, William to let them have one more year alive - provided they complete three tasks each during those twelve months.
Though most of the chapters follow either Elsa or Danny's progress through the year, some are concerned with Death, Harry and William as they observe the events - and occasionally interfere with proceedings. It's a bit of a risk to include this supernatural element to the story but it works so well. I loved the relationship between the three. They scheme, bicker and roll their eyes at Death who it must be said is a bit of a party animal...
As the book progresses we see both Danny and Elsa begin to make the most of their chance to live again. An Artisan Lovestyle might be a romance story but it's also a touching look at living well, seizing opportunities and sometimes learning to let go - whether that's accepting a loss or realising that certain relationships are too toxic to fight for. This is the second Lovestyle book; I haven't read the first, A Rock 'n Roll Lovestyle but although there are some returning characters and a few references to events in that book, I didn't feel I missed out as this is a new story rather that can be read as a standalone.
I finished An Artisan Lovestyle in a day and it left me with a big smile on my face. It's such an uplifting read and reminded me in some ways of one of my favourite films, It's a Wonderful Life. It was a sheer pleasure to read from start to finish, the characters are so beautifully brought to life with some truly emotive scenes and plenty of laughs too. This is a warm, wise and often witty story and one that I thoroughly recommend.

*I received a free ARC of this book via Rachel’s Random Resources blog tour. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

I really, really enjoyed An Artisan Lovestyle. It is the second ‘Lovestyle’ book and does contain references to previous events, but you do not need to have read A Rock ‘n’ Roll Lovestyle to follow this one (although I DO intend to go back and read it!).

This book has a little bit of humour, a little bit of romance, a little bit of the spiritual/paranormal, and a LOT of lessons about living life to the full.

We follow the separate journeys of Danny and Elsa as they each get a second chance at life, having thrown the previous go away on living for other people. Their paths are different but there are similarities in their need to find their own happiness.

Particularly entertaining to me was the sly game the author ran throughout: spot the intersections between the two story threads! Obviously this, and other plot elements relied heavily on far-fetched coincidences, but Kiltie Jackson owned this with gleeful abandon, making this paean to choice also a mischievous wink to preordained fate and ‘otherworldly’ meddling.

My own particular favourite aspect here would have to be the ‘Death’ sidebars. I adored the bromance between an anthropomorphised Death, William and Harry (fans of royalty may also note there is an Elsa and Anna combo!), and the visions of Death singing and dancing flamboyantly and swearing good-naturedly at his pals will stay with me and continue to make me smile.

An Artisan Lovestyle is a lighthearted, feelgood story that leaves you with a warm glow and the determination to improve the priorities in your own life. Highly recommended summer read!

“I have got absolutely no idea,” she replied. “I think we’re dreaming. You know… those dreams you have where everything feels real and then you wake up and think you’re in the wrong place, even though you’re actually in the right place.”
“Well, in that case, are you in my dream? Or am I in yours?” he asked.
“Hmmm, that is a good question,” she replied. “What do you think would be here if this was your dream?”
Danny thought for a moment before replying. “Let me see, there would be posters of big, shiny, motorbikes, Premier League footballers and high-action movies on the wall. The floor would be covered with a large, circular brown and orange rug, and we’d be sitting on a battered, cheap leatherette sofa.”
The woman looked at him with mild amusement. “Well… That’s precise. Are those all your favourite things then?”
“Nope,” he replied. “They’re all the things I detest the most but, with the kind of luck I have – pf always being in the wrong place, or doing the wrong thing at the wrong time – it’s exactly what I’d expect to find in my dreams. You know…, that sod’s law thingy?”

This is the second book I have read and reviewed written by Kiltie Jackson. The first in the series called A Rock n Roll Lovestyle was a highly enjoyable debut novel but I have to say that An Artisan Lovestyle topped it for me.

As it says in the blurb, Elsa and Danny die suddenly in unexpected and unrelated incidents. However, Elsa’s late husband Harry and Danny’s childhood art teacher, William, strike up a deal with Death that might mean they can actually carry on living. In order to do this, they both have a set of three tasks to pass.

Now I know that this kind of supernatural plot doesn’t appeal to everyone, and I would usually run a mile when approached with this type of book. I only gave this one a chance because I had enjoyed Ms. Kilties first book, and it just goes to show that you should expand your genres whenever possible because I was utterly compelled by this story.

As well as some familiar characters from A Rock n Roll Lovestyle, we are introduced to Danny and Elsa, the main characters in the book. They are both what you would describe as ‘good eggs’…not in a sickly, vomit inducing way but just good people, the type you would love to have as a best friend, warm, honest, unselfish and humble. In fact, it is the depth of character of these two personalities that make the book so utterly gripping because you care so deeply about what happens to them.

Kiltie also produces the sort of character you love to hate with equal talent and there are some truly funny moments too, which keeps the plot lighthearted and endearing.

The book reminded me of the Christmas film ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ in some ways and it certainly provoked some deep thinking from me. Sometimes it takes a book about dying to appreciate the privilege of living and it certainly isn’t ‘preachy’, dark or too moralistic.

A unique, heartwarming story with lovable characters and a thought-provoking plot. As the synopsis says ‘Are you living your life or just living your life?’

Thank you for my copy of the book which I have reviewed honestly.

When 5 stars are just not enough…

After reading the blurb I wasn’t too sure, this book would be for me but couldn’t give it a miss for one simple reason. I loved the first book by Kiltie Jackson, it took me to places, made me happy and so content, so I had really high hopes for this one too. All that dying and going back to fulfill their tasks, I really didn’t know what to expect and how will author pull it off. I had nothing to worry about as it seems. I don’t know how all these little details just slotted into right places at the right time and gave me experience like never before.

An Artisan Lovestyle not only follows lives of new characters but as we get to know them better, we also get to meet again some of the characters from book one and it’s just so nice to read about them once again, to see where the life has taken them.

This book grabs you straight away and takes you for a journey through grief, letting go and moving on, chasing dreams and making them true, creating new friendships and strengthening the old ones, discovering ourselves while risking it all and just making that leap over to the other side in hope future will hold something good for us. It had it all and more, this book will make you feel and think, you will feel happy, sad, worried, you will laugh out loud and scream from frustration. What else do you want from the book, than give you all possible emotions in one story.

Way to go Kiltie Jackson! After giving us amazing debut novel A Rock’n’roll Lovestyle, she managed to outdo herself with this one and I can’t recommend it enough.

It's funny, I've actually read very little romance over the years. Either because I thought of the genre as too saccharine or perhaps through some kind of literary snobbery, which in itself is a crime worse than not reading Harry Potter. It's also utterly nonsensical when you consider that one of my favourite books is Pride and Prejudice, the greatest love story of all time! Or is that Romeo and Juliet? Anyhow, I can officially pronounce myself wrong about romantic fiction. If everyone out there is romancing like Jackson then I am an utter convert!

I enjoyed Jackson's feel good, witty style of writing. She has a knack for being light hearted and touching all at the same time. Her exploration of these two melancholy individuals was so realistic that I was often massively frustrated by them. Stop being such a doormat, I wanted to shout at Danny. Be honest with yourself, was what I wanted to tell Elsa. I could advise them from the other side of the book as much as I liked, these two were not going to listen. So I had to let the story play out...

And play out it did, quite satisfactorily I might add. Although I did feel the book was quite long. This was largely down to Jackson's tendency to stay with a character through the minutiae of their actions, locking doors, putting on coats etc. as well as their thought processes. Some of this could have been cut out to provide a trimmer version of the story. But chunky or trim, in its very essence this book was a beautiful story of two vulnerable individuals who you can't help but root for from the off.

I can't even begin to explain how beautiful and amazing this book is. I absolutely loved it. The concept of the story was just so unique and not one you come across in books very often.

It was a pleasure of a read, loved the storyline, very entertaining throughout. I enjoyed getting to know the characters especially Elsa and Danny, loved seeing both of their stories play out. All the characters were very well written and thought out, some of them had such great personalities that made them come alive in the book.

I also had a real soft spot for Puddle the dog, he was so adorable and even had his own little antics & traits which come through in the story.

The story itself, was just seamlessly written, flowed really well, even though the whole story was like a race against the clock, as Elsa & Danny deadline was a year, the author kept me glued to those pages right to the very end of said deadline or in this case the stoke of midnight and omg talk about cutting it close.

Loved the characters of William and Harry, and their role within the story, which was secretly watching and overseeing how things played out in Elsa and Danny's lives. It was just so brilliantly done, but also funny in places.

There was just so much to love about this story that I could literally write an essay about it, but I'm not going to lol, so instead, I suggest you go read the book yourself and then you'll know exactly what I'm on about and hopefully like me, you'll fall in love with the story too.

Another fantastic book by Kiltie!! I thoroughly enjoyed her first book so I couldn't wait to get started on this! As expected, Kiltie had me completely hooked from the start and I enjoyed every moment. A very fun and emotional read about love and loss. There were sad moments when I had tears in my eyes and others had me laughing out loud (again, tears).

When Elsa and Danny both die they are given the option to live again but under three conditions. If they wish to live longer than just one more year, they must each complete their own tasks.
The story is such a brilliant and clever idea! The fact that Kiltie included Death as a character made it even better. He brought so much enjoyment to the story. I absolutely loved him!

After falling in love with the characters from the first book, it was lovely to see them in this one. The book definitely wouldn't have been the same without them.

I purchased the book on kindle but will definitely be buying the paperback! Such a fantastic book and the cover is absolutely gorgeous!! It will be a beautiful edition to my bookshelves!
I rarely read the same book twice but I would read this series again in a heartbeat!! I cannot wait to find out what happens next!! Highly recommended!!

Diving into Book 2 of The Lovestyle Series was like meeting up with a bunch of old friends. You know that way – when you haven't seen each other for a while – but it feels familiar and as comfortable as a pair of favourite pyjamas?
I absolutely loved the slightly-bonkers premise of the book, as its two main characters – Elsa and Danny – have twelve months to turn their lives around, or … Well, you'll need to read it to find out what they have to do, and if they succeed.
The author writes with great wit and warmth, and there were also several scenes that made my eyes leak a little.
Sukie, Pete and several others who featured in Book 1 make a return, their stories skilfully woven into the fabric of this fabulous, fun-filled and ultimately uplifting tale. There are a couple of memorable 'villains' too, Sandra being a stand-out in the 'love to loath' stakes. As Danny's friend Guy mused, 'The woman wouldn't know the truth if it slapped her around the face with a wet kipper.'
I'm thrilled to have Book 4 – A Timeless Lovestyle – lined up on my Kindle. If you haven't dipped your toe into this series yet, what are you waiting for?

I love this book for its unusual premise, humorous, and honest writing. I instantly connected with both Elsa and Danny making me eager to read the next chapter to see what happens next. With Danny being a Mr. Nice Guy and Elsa being a grieving widow the book could easily have fallen into the trap of portraying Elsa as a damsel in distress waiting to be rescued as often seen in romance novels but Kiltie Jackson excels in creating strong female characters. Though they are floundering Elsa and Danny both have an inner strength they need to complete the three tasks to survive. It was lovely to catch up with the characters from her debut novel Rock’n’Roll Lovestyle , and to see snippets of references to the previous book scattered into the story but I enjoyed meeting the new ones.

The introduction of Death is inspired. The plot lends itself to an angelic intervention as seen in the films I loved as a kid Heaven Can Wait (both versions) and of course, It’s a Wonderful Life so he is a refreshing addition and a fantastic memorable character. His outlandish antics and scenes with Harry and William will stay with me and continue to make me grin for a long time. He links the two threads of Elsa and Danny stories perfectly. I was kept guessing throughout the book as the plot unfolded and twisted.

This is the first book by Kiltie Jackson that I have read and I loved it. It was such a clever story and had me hooked from page one. It is witty and charming and had such a unique storyline.

The story is of two people Danny and Elsa who both die on New Year's Eve, neither event is related. However, their guardian angels scheme to get them a second chance. They have one year to succeed. I loved the two main characters, both of them are so engaging and I was cheering them on throughout the book.

There are some great secondary characters too, including death who really made me laugh. There was a great mix of charters you loved, hated and definitely wanted to slap.

This is book two in the series and I wish I had read book one first, but it certainly didn't detract from my enjoyment of this one. I highly recommend this book and I will be reading Kiltie's other books in the series now too.

After reading, and loving, Kiltie Jackson’s first novel ‘A Rock ‘n’ Roll Lovestyle, I was really looking forward to reading the second in the series and had high expectations. I can safely say it did not disappoint.
This story is not just your typical love story, it’s also about second chances, trying to make the right decisions in life and the consequences of those decisions.
Once again KJ draws you in with her descriptions of the places her characters visit which makes you feel as though you have been transported to said places and are experiencing their delights along with them.
Characters from the first book also make an appearance. It was nice to see how their lives had developed as quite often when a book is finished I often find myself imagining how how their lives are a few years down the line.
This books is a must read for fans of Kiltie’s first novel.

This book was great. Although this is book 2 in the series and I have not read the first book I was able to follow the book without reading the first book in the series. I felt like even those that are not fond of romance would still enjoy this book. It was very different then other books I have read which was great because it wasn't the same love story you have heard a million times. Although, in the book a person basically knows what is going to happen or what is suppose to happen it keeps you wondering if it will happen and when. Then you wonder will they fall in love like they are suppose to. This is the first book of this series I have read and I plan to read all the others as well. I highly recommend this series to everyone.

Wow, what a story!

Kiltie Jackson has produced another outstanding read.

I laughed with the characters- I even laughed at the characters and at times I just wanted to bang their heads together.
What I loved most about this book, was the very real issue of love, loss and having the courage to move on, a subject that was dealt with amazingly with an element of comedy to keep it lighthearted.
I feel like the characters are now like friends to me, as I felt like I was in the story, watching it unfold before my eyes!

Thank you Kiltie for another amazing read, I do hope there is a third book coming as I for one cannot wait for the next installment.
