Certainly the most comprehensive account for the Russian Conquest of Chechnya and Dagestan. For it's time, you cannot feel but be impressed by the great lengths the author went in order to collect the primary sources and to examine the accuracy of these sources. The greatest thing however, is how is account resonates for one travelling through Chechnya and Dagestan today - more than a hundred years after the author's journey.
