Short conversations taken out of context - this just doesn’t work for me. It may be a way to test your progress but it took me forever to get through this. I really can’t recommend this book.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I don't actually know any Spanish, and I only requested this book because I like listening to people speaking Spanish. But, after listening to this, I did remember some of it and it was incredibly helpful with the phases and conversations it contained.

I have previously reviewed the book on Conversational French Dialogues, so I was expecting more of the same from this book. Unfortunately, that was true, but this book has even more issues than the French book did.

Again, I find that the English sections within the book to be written in a way that no English speaker would talk. As with the other book, this makes me question whether the Spanish itself is actually a good reflection of the way Spanish speakers talk. There definitely are some issues with spelling and grammar on the Spanish side. While I have never taken any Spanish classes, I did grow up in California and so did assimilate some concepts of Spanish spelling and grammar. I know, for instance, that Spanish speakers don't typically use many personal pronouns while speaking; the Spanish sections had a lot of this usage. The word “sí” is often spelled without the accent over the “i,” which actually changes the meaning of the word. Clearly, the word with the accent meaning yes most often appeared to be the correct word in context, but it was spelled without the accent, which makes it the word “if.”

A lot of the dialogues are on topics that would help a traveler or exchange student to a Spanish-speaking country, like how to order in a restaurant or find your classroom. I did think, though, that some choices for dialogues were a little bizarre; for instance, there were dialogues about getting the wrong job application in the airline industry or asking for help with your computer’s operating system (including licensing it). Neither of these topics would be needed for someone who was just casually visiting a Spanish-speaking country. And there definitely seemed to be a bias towards Spain rather than Spanish-speaking countries in Central and South America, as there were topics about moving around Europe and North Africa—like flying to London or returning from Amsterdam—compared to similar about Central and South America.

I think the formatting of the eBook makes it hard to truly assimilate and compare Spanish and English because the sentences aren't right next to each other; it isn’t so easy to flip around in an eBook to compare back and forth. This book, too, would certainly not be suitable for anyone who is a beginner or near beginner learning Spanish. I would think that someone should be at least an intermediate level to be able to use this book so that you would know some of the phrases and concepts and could better correlate between the Spanish and English sides of the dialogue (as well as have a better sense of the errors. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this book. There are undoubtedly better books on conversational Spanish.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Spanish and English for both non-Spanish speaking students and Spanish students!

Lingo Mastery has embarked on a mission – to make Spanish more accessible to a wider population. In the Introductory Note the goal is stated well: ‘So you want to learn Spanish, beloved reader? Excellent — if you’ve purchased this book then you’re already well on your way to doing so. Spanish, also called Castilian, is a beautiful tongue spoken by over 570 million people across the world; it is a language that has spread across every continent and which opens the doors to entire worlds once you learn to speak it. Since we are born, our life is constantly about picking up small and large things and learning to identify what works for us and what doesn’t; knowing what we can improve with and what makes us worse; and finally, studying where we made the wrong choices and learning lessons from them. Learning a language is no different. Some students choose — or are provided with — the wrong means of study, with professors giving them boring textbooks full of rules they’ll never learn or need in a real world situation; while others may overwhelm them with reading material that only serves to make them feel uncomfortable and doubtful of their own skills and level as a Spanish learner. Our goal with this book is to allow you, the reader, to encounter useful, entertaining conversations that adapt very well into dozens of real life situations that you can and certainly will encounter in the Spanish-speaking world, giving you a chance to fend for yourself when you come across them! Vocabulary is crucial to learning any new language, and the conversations in this book will guarantee you pick up plenty of it and watch how it is applied to real life.’

But on to the contents. The story/conversations include Shopping, Calling a Taxi, Requesting a Work Appointment, Booking a Hotel, Beach holidays, Baseball Game Invitations, Help!, Volunteers, I don’t like my job, Birthday present, I can’t find it Failed Subject, Baby Shower, Filming a video, Danger - a total of 105 frequently encountered conversational stories offered in Spanish and in English side by side that makes learning Spanish fun! And so it proceeds with one of the more accessible adjuncts to mastering the Spanish vocabulary in a manner that places words in context and thus – easy to remember!

The technique is solid and the lessons well taught. This is a very fine introduction to Spanish, appropriate for all age levels, and a book much needed at this time in our national status!

Here they are: one-hundred and five conversations, in Spanish, with English translations following each story. The exchanges are very simple, too simple in fact, even for beginning Spanish learners. The books put out by Ollie Richards are much more challenging, even the ones intended for beginners, but for that reason are much better. A sense of immersion, being thrown into the language in media res, is more helpful than being given the same sort of parroted and rote “Donde esta?” questions and answers. That’s been my experience, at least.
Also, because this collection involves not just dialogue, but actions, following along can sometimes be confusing. Two characters will be arguing about whether to go to the movies, and then all of a sudden they’ll be purchasing tickets, without even a parenthetical aside explaining their transition from one place to another. “Stage directions” (even if written only in Spanish) would have been helpful. Another problem is that some of the English translations are clunky. My Spanish is nowhere near good enough to know whether all of the Spanish dialogues are clunky or syntactically awkward, but a lot of the English translations of the Spanish dialogues were just frankly bad.
Mileage will vary, though, and working with a so-so tool like this one is better than doing nothing at all. Still, I prefer the Ollie Richards’ books to this one, or even watching an episode of some telenovela on Univision, or an episode of “Caso Cerrado con Dr. Polo” to limber up my linguistic muscles.

Book Title: Conversational Spanish Dialogues
Published By: Lingo Mastery

About the Book :

Learning a foreign language is always on my bucket list. And learning Spanish was a very fantasy thing. Incidentally, after I have made this decision, I won a book in an international Giveaway from Library Thing. I could not resist myself from reading the book in one go.

This book completely stresses upon a very practical approach of learning Spanish Language in the form of simple and daily conversations and small stories. Each conversation starts in Spanish Language and also has a English translated version.

The story/conversations include Shopping, Calling a Taxi, Requesting a Work Appointment, Booking a Hotel, Beach holidays, Baseball Game Invitations, Help! etc. that which people generally encounter every day. A total of 105 sample conversations are included in the book to make learning the language a fun ride.

A definite recommendation to everyone who wants to learn a conversational Spanish Language.

I love languages and Spanish is among my favorite. I really was able to glean a lot of additional information from this book although I know when learning a language it is important to hear it. I have taken years of Spanish and am taking a refresher and this book has really added so much to what I am learning.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The stories are progressively more difficult which is great for learning. They are all adult-oriented and contain useful vocabulary. The final set of stories offer a translation in English as well.
