Gene McGuire received a life sentence for a murder he did not commit. Serving that life sentence ... he found life. No one would have imagined such an outcome when, as a 17-year-old, he was convicted of Second Degree Murder and heard the judge speak those ominous words, ..".for the rest of your natural life." In Unshackled, McGuire takes readers from the scene of the crime--a lakeside tavern in sleepy little Lake Winola, Pennsylvania through 34 years, nine months, and 15 days of incarceration, all while serving a life sentence... for a murder he didn't commit. Glimpses of light penetrate a world of abject darkness, making Unshackled a most surprising, engaging and liberating read-a powerful and moving story of freedom, forgiveness and moving forward in life.
At 17, Eugene McGuire thought his life was over when the Judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole for a murder Eugene did not commit. Read my review at RE:View: Unshackled | The Devotional Guy https://thedevotionalguy.me/2017/02/2...

I liked the book a lot although it took me a couple chapters to feel the pull of it. I personally found it hard to believe that even though Gene was drunk, he didn’t just bolt after he saw his ‘hero’ cousin get so viciously violent with someone who hadn’t harmed him. His story also highlights the tragedy of inept court-appointed counsel. I was really pulled in by the accounts of his prison experiences and relationships as well as the transformation of his outlook. I thought the story was well written. I suspect the author is a very effective guest speaker for schools and churches.
A decent read. Really had to skim the last few chapters to make it through all the religious details. I enjoyed the overall sentiment of the book but it wasn't exactly my cup of tea.
Gene's story is a true story of FAITH, PATIENCE AND FORGIVENESS. After reading HIS story it will open your eyes to what God CAN and WILL do! God Bless!
