Hybrid Heat #1

Under His Care

Rate this book
He knows best…

For nineteen years all Chuey needed to worry about was survival. Now that he’s safe, rescued from the jungles by his adoptive father, Logan, he can start discovering who he is and what he wants. What he wants is Ryder, the leader of an allied pack of wolf hybrid shifters. But Logan wants Chuey to have nothing to do with the older biker. He does all he can to keep them apart, including threatening the fragile friendship between the packs.

Ryder has made his fair share of enemies while leading his ragtag group of shifters. He’s made some allies too. That’s why when he senses that the son of one of his allies is his mate, he isn’t jumping for joy. The opposite. Chuey is new to the bear shifters and new to civilization in general. He doesn’t need an older man like Ryder handing him more problems. Especially a man who doesn’t only want Chuey to be his mate, but to be his boy as well.

Meanwhile, Ryder’s fiercest enemy of the moment, Marcos, is revving up an old feud. The world may be big, but their area of the world is small and Marcos doesn’t like Ryder’s pack encroaching on their territory. He uses the only tool he knows, violence, and when that violence reaches the feet of Ryder’s boy, Ryder decides it is time to end this feud for good.

Under His Care is the first book in the Hybrid Heat series. It features a May/Dec relationship, themes of dominance, light age play and a whole lot of steamy moments!

I actually had a hard time getting into this at first. I stopped at about 30% and took a breather then came back. I enjoyed it more after that. I loved Ryder in all his motorcycle-riding, leather, hot daddyness. And I liked Chuey who was a little naive and young but he seemed to grow as the story went.

However, I have no idea what was going on with Chuey's padre. I don't know what the author had intended there but it made zero sense to me that he proclaimed he loved Chuey like a son but then ignored him completely and acted like an ass when Chuey didn't do things the way he wanted them done. And then the apology was mediocre. Plus, I didn't like the fact that Chuey seemed to have no connection to Logan's mates and it seemed they didn't want him around. I don't think the author did a very good job there because I know Logan and his mates have a story but I don't want to read it after reading how they were in this book. It just seemed misplaced and confusing.

Honestly though, while this was okay for me, I really have no desire to rush and read the rest of the series. None of the others were very interesting to me.

A paranormal age gap romance would normally tick many of my boxes.

This one is labelled book 1 in the series, yet felt like jumping into the middle of a story. Lots of unfamiliar side characters and a shifter world not well explained made for a confusing start. Chuey's back story same thing. The attraction between the MCs seem to have begun before this book as well, leaving me feeling disconnected with both the plot and the romance.

Not off to a good start, all of the above could have been forgiven had the on-page story, character portrays and writing style been strong and to my liking. But at the halfway mark, I still didn't care much about Ryder, Chuey or their story, so jumping ship.

Age gap, lite Daddy kink and shifters, Yeah!!!

Kiki Burrelli is continuing where her Bearly Legal: Bear Brothers series leaves off. Cheuy is the jaguar that Logan rescued in Mexico. Cheuy has come into his own now with the help of Julian, Hugh and Logan. But Cheuy is still new to this world and something confuse him but not an older sexy hybrid biker that goes by the name Ryder.

This was a great start to this new series. Ready for book 2.

Meh, I feel like I can't give this a rating because I didn't even really care about this story enough to hate it or get annoyed or upset about the things I didn't like.

Like I just...didn't care for the characters, at all. They didn't interest me, they were very...by rote, none of the other characters interested me either, the conflict didn't interest me and I started skimming, the sex had no spark of anything for me...

This started out okay with a somewhat promising beginning but then it all went downhill for there. I just...didn't care, even though I tried to. It wasn't even a "I liked these things but didn't care about most of it" kind of deal...I just...didn't care about any of this, character or plot wise. Nothing grabbed my attention.

So I'm not rating this because I don't think it would be quite fair to even give it one or two starts when I don't even care about the things that had potential to be likable or even the things that didn't work in this story.

I just want to move on from this read. *sigh*

Not bad....

So, didn’t know that this book was a spin off from her Bear Brothers Series. Even so, the author did a good enough job to where this book can stand on its own. Now, I still don’t know much about Chuey’s past after reading this. I find it a bit odd that the author didn’t quickly go over that since he was one of the MCs here, but hey I at least knew it wasn’t good.

The only other thing I would point out is the whole daddy thing. See it is mentioned quite a bit in he beginning then dies out a bit and then brought back at the end. So, IMO it was inconsistent daddying 🤣.

Oh, and her other series, The Jeweled King’s Curse, was briefly mentioned as well. All in all, not bad.

Despite a few minor frustrations in the first third of this book I really liked it a lot. This is the 2nd book by this author that I have read and I can't wait to read the rest she has published. She has created a fascinating world to set these stories in and I can't wait to explore the rest of it. In this book I completely fell in love with Chuey. He is beyond amazing, brave and lovable. Having read book three first I had already met some of these guys and it was great to learn more about them. Next onto book two and then on to the Bear Brothers series!

4 stars. Great read that had a lot more going for it than just the surface level. It was more than I was expecting which I loved because while I do enjoy this author's work, I wasn't really expecting too much from this. If that makes any sense.

I loved the characters. Absolutely adored them which is always an automatic win for me. Chuey is the cutest little thing ever. His back story is so interesting and I need to go back and read the series where he's first introduced because I really need to see the entire revolution of his character. He still has some of his ways from when he lived in the jungle but he's also growing and evolving past that and it was pretty interesting to see. I loved that this book while it is still very much a romance, it was also a coming of age type of story for Chuey.

The romance in this is smoking hot. The chemistry between Chuey and Ryder was great. They work so well together and their whole relationship was just really cute.

The ending was adorable and hot and I think it wrapped up their story really well. I look forward to seeing more of them in the next book and seeing where they go from here.

I haven't read any of the Bear books by this author so I kind of felt like I'd come in halfway through the story. Ryder and Chuey were cute when they were all broody and wanting each other from a distance. But once they got together I started skimming.

YAY! Chuey's story is finally here! And I LOVED IT!

We first met Chuey in the Bear Brothers series, when Logan rescued him while in the jungle. He was a wild thing then, but a couple books have passed, and now it's his turn to find his mate and get his HEA. And what a mate he gets! Ryder - hello Daddy! - is just yum! Strong, an alpha leader all the way, and totally crazy for Chuey and determined to be a perfect mate for him.

I loved the characters - I LOVE all the overlap with previous series (and even other series that I figured weren't connected in any way!) and the sense of family in this. I wanted to slap some sense into Logan for not approving of Chuey and Ryder at first, but I'm glad he came around. I loved all the moments with Chuey and Ryder, from them painting, to Chuey showing Ryder how he survived, and just how Ryder was head over heels for Chuey. So sweet.

Love this new series from Kiki, can't wait for more! Although this is the start of a new series, I think it would mean more having read her Bear Brothers series first since so many characters overlap.

I enjoyed this didn't realize I should have read the series Bear Brothers first. I felt a little lost and was missing lot's of backstory.
I still found it sweet and loved Chuey with his innocence and determination to be thought of as an adult.

Finally, we have Chuey's story!

We first meet Chuey in Bear Brothers series - Unbearable, where Logan, Julian and Hugh rescue him from Mexico. We have no information on how he became feral, but Logan has taken on the role of Father figure and protector and maybe with a little more zeal than is necessary. Hybrid Heat is a new series, but has many character cross overs from Bear Brothers.

This is a coming of age story, with May/December mates. Chuey is a young man, 19 and finding his independence, his mate and place in life - the reason for his rescue and finally his own family. Ryder is the hard-bitten President of the local wolf-hybrid MC, a decade or so older than Chuey and faced with challenges from a rival (human) club. The last thing he needs is to act on the fact that he knows Chuey is his mate, so he is trying to give him the time to acclimate to civilization. But in between trying to set up a source of income for the MC and not falling out with allies, things come to a head between Chuey and Logan when his bid to be accepted as an adult ends in an act of rebellion and Ryder has to finally claim him as his mate.

The insta-love/mpreg is par for the course, so when the rivalry between clubs takes an explosive turn, Chuey's devotion to his mate and unborn son takes on a purely emotional drive to get them to safety, regardless of his well-being. I was hoping for one less medically interfered with birth, but accept the circumstances around this one - although the location was OTT!

I enjoyed the darker side of the story, the subplot around the rivalry takes a dire turn and it opens up a wealth of possibilities for the ongoing storyline - I'm all for fluffy nonsense, but this was wonderfully gritty and I just hope it doesn't get glossed over in the next book.

This story managed to put in a *little bit* of everything I like which made me sit and read it in one sitting. But even though I thoroughly enjoyed this read, throughout the story, those *little bits* needed expanding, just a tad more detail/information was needed, it just felt like too many teasers! Overall, it finishes on an epilogue a few months later and left me with a contented *sigh*.

The next book is about Cassius and the Garth - so that should be an "interesting" combination!

Hot and thought provoking

I'm so happy that we finally get to read Chuey's story. I couldn't help but be curious about what lead him to be living in a jungle alone and mostly as an animal. I think Kiki has another hit on her hands, as this is so much more than a HOT shifter romance. Although it is very much that as well.

Chuey's story to me is more than his finding a mate but a question capability. His padre still sees him as this wild child who doesn't understand human/shifter norms. He discounts Chuey's life before he met him. Ryder has known of Chuey for awhile and recognized him as his mate for a good bit of that time. He to worries that Chuey doesn't have enough understanding of their society to make an informed decision.
Chuey has come to a point in his new life that he feels the need to spread his wings. He wants to be recognized as a man and not a child he. He now understands most of what's being said around him and he did survive on his own in the jungle for all those years. At 19 though, he still behaves rashly at times which helps those around him continue to discount him.
As Ryder slowly discovers though Chuey is more than what he's given credit for. This is poignantly demonstrated when he shows Ryder what he is good at. His ability to wait without movement, the speed of his elk kill and the compassion he shows a fellow predator all speak to his emotional intelligence far exceeding that which he is given credit for.
While age difference in this society is typically not an issue, there are numerous incidences of May/December relationships. In this case it seems to be an issue due in part to Chuey's past and their non-vanilla relationship.
This story highlights how we tend to pigeon hole people by what we think we know about them and how that affects them. It's definitely worth a read and some thought.

FYI: I received this book as an ARC for my honest review. I also have KU so I don't see this making a difference one way or the other

Chuey and Ryder

While I was excited to see Chuey’s book, I don’t think this series is my favorite. I think the den will always be my favorite. It could be that the themes have changed (very slight daddy kink). I do like bdsm and other erotic themes but mixed with the shifter world, it just wasn’t quite right for me. Not in this world. I guess I just want one or the other. And Logan. It’s like he had a personality transplant, and it had me disliking him. Hard. Poor Chuey. I think I needed more fleshing out of the story, just a little...more. It moved too quickly and I just wasn’t emotionally invested in characters. Still a good read, but it fell short of what I know this author can accomplish.

There was an element to this book that made me extremely uncomfortable. I didn’t like the “Daddy” and “boy” stuff between Ryder and Chuey. With Chuey still being in his teens and very child-like, and Ryder sounding like he was in his early 40’s, I found it to be very disturbing. However, I did like Ryder and Chuey as individuals. Also, after getting glimpses and pieces of Garth from other books, I’m really interested in his character and wonder who his mate might be.

Emotional

Chuey is young and found in Mexico wild and scared by his pack of bear shifters. Ryder is a hybrid wolf President of a Mc but older then Chuey. Ryder finally stops walking away from Chuey because they are mates. As always KiKi, this book had me going through all kinds of emotions. I can’t wait for the story to continue.

Didn't feel like a First Book. While reading it, I was very aware of it being a spinoff series, and havign not read anything else from this universe I often felt lost. There were lots of ideas that we're probably explained at length in other books that were glossed over here leaving a feeling of incompleteness, or feeling rushed. Still an okay read for what it was.

For a book that is the first in a series, the world building and character development were seriously lacking. Many times I felt like I was barging into the middle of a conversation.

Chuey has been another one of my favorite characters since I first met him from the bear shifter stories. He’s just absolutely adorable and you can’t help but fall in love with him. And I was so proud to see how much he’s grown up in this book. I just loved it.
Chuey knows he’s still a little different. Being a different breed, being not fully ‘tame’ for lack of a better, he knows he still has a lot to learn. Unfortunately for most, he’s learning a lot from Garth and that’s not necessarily a good thing. Especially when it involves him sneaking out to a bar with Garth when he’s still underage. But Chuey wanted to come to see the man of his dreams. Or hope to catch a glimpse of him. He caught a glance at Ryder all right, along with being humiliated by his own padres. He just wanted to be treated as a man, even if he still didn’t understand everything. And Ryder constantly denying him wasn’t helping. But Ryder can only ignore him for so long, before he has to give in. And it’s at a bad time, because now his sweet Chuey is caught in the middle of a territorial war and it doesn’t look good right now. Especially when the boss of that ‘clan’, Marcos, is now trying to kill them and shut their businesses down. Ryder knows now he has to end it all. He just hopes he can do it in time.
Like I said, I’ve adored Chuey for a long time. He’s just absolutely adorable. But so many underestimate him and it saddens me for him. Yes, he was a feral little guy at first and couldn’t speak or understand well, but he’s grown so much and he’s so tired of being treated like a little kid. Yes, he knows he’s only nineteen but he’s still a man. Yes, he still has a lot to learn, but he’s still a man. He just wants to be seen and not treated like he’s 2 or stupid. And it broke my heart a lot for him in this book. At the way he was being treated. Everyone was to be treated as an equal. He already knows he’s not like everyone else but that doesn’t mean he’s helpless or dumb. It also didn’t help when his mate kept ignoring him at first. That was a dig that bore deep.
But then again I got Ryder’s side of it too. His life isn’t sunshine and roses, being the leader of a hybrid motorcycle gang. He didn’t want that life for Chuey. There was also the huge age difference. So many variables that made things hard and the decisions harder. But in the end, he couldn’t deny what he needed. And they are perfect for each other.
I’m so so happy to see how much Chuey has grown. And so proud of him for standing up for himself and not being walked all over. He still has a lot to learn and more growing to do, but he’s learning fast and he doesn’t back down. He just a great little guy I so love. From being a feral panther to a grown man who can handle what life is throwing at him. So loved this story.

Overprotective

I tried to read this book a few weeks back, but could not get into it. Then recently I picked it up and began it again, immediately I fell in love with Chuey. He had endured so much as a youngster. Abuse, isolation, and self reliance. He seemed strange to some, but beloved by his Dad's - the ones who cared for him after finding him - wild & self sufficient, but never educated. Chuey sat back & observed. Blending into the background - often hiding (his security blanket). His protective Den of Bears kept him sheltered and close out of love & concern.

Unfortunately Chuey wanted more - to be free like his 20 something Bear buddies, who others considered irresponsible. A coming of age moment occurred. Choices had to be made. The leader of a Hybrid Motorcycle Club felt an unfamiliar pull towards Chuey, despite his youth - he had lived a life many couldn't imagine.

He was more mature than his chronological age and current setting knowledge revealed. And his ability to learn was very present, sometimes it took him a little while to process, but eventually Chuey understood. He could be stubborn, had a mind of his own, and wanted to have the autonomy to make his own decisions. He felt he'd outgrown his overprotective Dads. But what Chuey didn't realize was that the Alpha he chose was just as protective of him.

But these feelings were different. As much as his Alpha wanted to protect him - Chuey wanted a more equal relationship. Yet there was so much Chuey didn't know. His Alpha had to warn his men not to laugh when Chuey unintentionally did something humorous. But what he did know came as a surprise to his Alpha & the entire Motorcycle Club. This is an exciting story with danger, adventure, shifters, Hybrids, Humans, Bears, rival clubs, rampant destruction, hatred, anger, fear, innocence, painting, and falling in love for the first time. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next two books in the Hybrid Heat series: #2 Under His Control and #3 Under His Command.

3.5/5

I adore MC stories. That may have been what finally convinced me to read romance outside of the Regency category. They were the only contemporary romance I read for a long while. And it was certainly, along with the idea of shifters and an Alpha-type H, what drew my interest in Under His Care (Hybrid Heat #1).

While this may be considered stand alone for some, I found there were quite a few pieces that were missing for me as this was my first book by Kiki Burrelli. There were several parts where I was confused or lost because I did not understand the world or to subtext between the characters. This was not a huge issue, but something to keep in mind when approaching this book as it was distracting. To me, stand alone means that I will understand the book entirely without having read anything previously and while I might miss an inside joke or two, I will get the important relationship dynamics. That’s not what I found here.

For those who are hesitant with this book because of the age play stuff, please do not be. It is so mild. They call each other “Daddy/boy”, but that’s about it beyond the mild BDSM moments of dominance and play. I actually liked that it was mild and more focused on the power exchange. Much more interesting to me.

Here again, I found myself reading a mpreg book. This was one of the better ones in that I loved how they talked about what it meant to them to be able to have a child that was a little bit of both of them. It was powerful and important. It left me with all the feels. So while mpreg may never be my fav storyline, I can absolutely support the idea of creating a literary world in which people of the same sex are able to have a child together.

The subplot to the romance here was okay. Nothing amazing, but it made sense and fit with the world that Burrelli created.

Available on KU.

Happy Reading!

Chuey is EVERYTHING

Ever since chuey stepped onto the scene as a feral black cat panther-esq (smaller than usual) shifter in the wilds with his protective streak, I have loved him. His book was PERFECT.

FLAIL REVIEW INCOMING

Chuey is an emotional guy / small panther shifter with a harsh past, who just wants to be seen for who he is now, not who he WAS when he was found. His adoptive father, Logan, has held onto him & been overprotective to a point that has made Chuey feel a bit infantilized, because even though he’s nearing 20, Logan won’t let him out of his sight for long, but I don’t begrudge Logan of this… to an extent. Chuey was ALONE, in the wilds, without socialization as far as his adoptive pack knows.

He has just learned societal customs, picked up a second language VERY quickly for someone who never really spoke - he is quite brilliant - but as a parent Logan just isn’t ready to let him go out into the world again when after a couple years, when Chuey’s childhood was already so harsh.

Enter, Ryder. Chuey’s mate. A hybrid shifter from another pack aka Chuey’s padre’s worst nightmare. Anyone who reads anything paranormal and mate related knows what this means - end game baby.

Logan reacts…. Not well. It is quite emotional because Chu is the sweetest most honest loving character and I want to fight anyone that makes him sad, even if it’s the man that found him & was the first one to reach out and bridge that communication (he was full time shifted when he was found) gap 😭

I love them that’s all.

First, I really feel like you need to read the author's other series before reading this book. I have not and I felt really lost in the world. Because the author has built the world in another book there is none here and I felt behind the whole time.
aa
The author's writing is good. I did like the main action scene. The author did keep the characters a little shallower than I would have liked. The Daddy kink was very lite and really not explained well in this story. Knowing the author had a previous book that might have explained it more made it a bit more acceptable. I do think that the author really needed to, again, warn the reader that they should read the previous series.

Overall I liked the story. I think I would have felt much more for this book if I would have read the previous book. I might have been more invested in the characters and gave it a higher rating if I had as is I felt 3 was generous.

His?

They were an unconventional couple Chuey spent most of his life along in the woods, Ryder the Alpha and leader of a MC. Chuey's family found him and brought him home, he had to learn everything yet he kept having dreams of someone but their face wasn't very clear. When Ryder first saw the boy, he knew that he was his mate but Chuey was almost half his age and the son of an ally and new friends bear shifters. Chuey was learning how to navigate this new world and trying to find his place in it. But,there's one thing he was sure of he wanted the scary older biker, but everytime he tried to get close Ryder would push him away. But,when he heard that Chuey was moving in with another shifter that was the straw that broke the camel's back. Not only did he go to inquire but this would be the beginning of their relationship, life and journey together. Even though he knew this would be against all his parents wishes Chuey knew that Ryder was his future. Good Read!!😍😍

Really solid start to a new series. I'm intrigued with this weird little town and it's inhabitants. Chuey's a panther shifter and new to the human world in general. He raised himself in the wild of Mexico (I guess there's a beginning story but I haven't read it) and doesn't really understand everything at first. Then comes Ryder, a shifter hybrid much older than Chuey but his chosen mate so who really cares about that stupid age thing. His dad, that's who. That part of the story was really sad. Anyways, there's a lot of trouble in their town of Noel and I'm guessing it's only going to get worse. I will for sure continue with this as it was very entertaining for me. Also, I'm really hoping for Cassius' story so we get to know about him and his smart ass a bit more.

Wavering between three and four stars for this rating, this book is a 3.5 for me at least! There's lots of good stuff in this book and I enjoyed this authors way of writing. A well flushed out shifter book, good characters, good story, engaging an interesting world-building and side characters! But I felt the daddy kink didn't quite fit in with the story (though not heavily featured) and the mpreg happened a bit too soon considering Chuey was only 19 and they were freshly mated. Other than that though I quite enjoy this and I'm definitely continuing the series!
