The gods offer her a chance at freedom for the first time since she opened her little box. All she has to do is collect three of the greatest sins of the world and she will be forgiven.
She didn’t expect the world to have changed so much without her.
She didn’t expect the sins to be three sinfully sexy men either.
She certainly didn’t expect it to be so hard to steal away their life.
But perhaps that is the price she has to pay for forgiveness.
A.K. Koonce is a USA Today best selling author. She's a mom by day and a fantasy and paranormal romance author by night. She keeps the fantastical stories in her mind on an endless loop, while she tries her best to focus on her actual life and not that of the spectacular but demanding fictional characters who always fill her thoughts
I made it through this one, which I can’t say for all Koonce books, but I didn’t enjoy it, and I won’t read book 2. I was excited for this adaptation of Greek myth because I love myth and fairytale adaptations, but this was a let down. Either the MC was TSTL or this plot had some giant sink holes, but either way, this was a frustrating read.
The premise of this book is that the gods released Pandora—aka Hope, our MC—from the box where she’d been imprisoned for thousands of years so that she could go to the humans and retrieve some of the sins she’d unleashed, putting them back in the box. The gods make it so that the sins will be naturally drawn to her to ensure that she, along with her god-sent watch dog Alex, can find them.
I wasn’t really sure what to make of Pandora’s defense of her actions in her myth: “The world was filled with terrible things, not because I chose to open that box, but because they chose to gift it to a simple mortal.” On the one hand, yeah, the gods were probably setting her up for failure, but on the other hand, she still chose to open the box. I also didn’t like her attitude about her mission. At one point, she says, “I suppose I shouldn’t have worried about sending Ashton away to the gods because he wasn’t even interested in me like that.” So if a guy isn’t into her, he apparently deserves imprisonment and she’s fine with condemning him to the same enduring torment that she experienced. But then she realizes that they are into each other, and so begins the constant TSTL questioning of how to get around the gods’ instructions, even though the solution was absurdly obvious. She thinks, “Maybe my best bet was to not go for them at all. Theoretically, someone like Kiki Riker would also work. If men counted as sin, then surely women did too? We were just as capable after all.” The very first sinner that she met was a woman, so why is this still a question.
I also didn’t really like how she treated the guys. Ashton, a rock star, is the first guy she meets, and they obviously have a budding thing going on. It’s obvious to the point that Zavier, Ashton’s best friend and the creator of a dating app, refuses Hope’s advances out of loyalty to his friend. But Hope is persistent and they end up fooling around. When she later meets up with Ashton again, she refuses to kiss him because she can’t hurt Zavier like that. ??? But hurting Ashton like that was fine? Ashton and Brock were the other members of the harem. Alex had his moments, but overall I didn’t really care about any of these characters. Brock didn’t really have much screen time at all, and he was probably the least developed guy, but the scenes with him tended to be the funniest (relatively speaking, of course).
The plot had some serious holes. We were supposed to believe that the maker of a dating app, who initially denied himself something that he wanted out of loyalty to a friend, was the greediest person alive. Bull. Go after an oil tycoon or someone in big pharma. The same goes for the rock star. Who mean to tell me that he’s the most harmful source of lust and drugs when there are human traffickers, serial rapists and killers, and drug cartels? BULL. Hope acted as if she had no way to save these guys, but literally any one else would have worked in their place because they were average-level sinners—just normal humans. All Hope needed to do was hang out in an alley until a rapist or killer found her (because sinners are attracted to her, remember), and that would have been the end of that.
There was also a weird bit near the end when Hope asks a question that horrifies Alex for some unknown reason and he insists on speaking to her alone. He acts as if he is making a grand revelation, but I don’t remember getting any new information there, so it was an odd note to end the book on.
Side note, did they have tailors in ancient Greece? At one point, Hope mentions how modern shopping is much different than going to a tailor, but I don’t really picture ancient Greeks doing that in the first place.
The writing itself had some issues as well. The mechanics were typical for a Koonce book, and I saw many problems with typos, word choice, spelling, and grammar. I also saw a few odd uses of past tense in dialogue. For example, one of the guys said, “I liked you, Hope,” but no one really reacted to the fact that he implied that he no longer did. Furthermore, Alex could project his thoughts into Hope’s mind, and it was confusing that both his thoughts and hers appeared in italics. In the places that didn’t have dialogue tags, it was unclear who was thinking what. Koonce also occasionally used the wrong guy’s name when describing the action in a scene.
Furthermore, the following was a bit of an odd moment. One of the guys uses a slang term, and Hope asks what it refers to: “‘Taking someone out for a meal and then taking them back to your room for sex,’ he said matter of factly. ‘That’s a thing?’ I couldn’t believe that. It seemed so dishonest. If you wanted to have sex with someone, you just should. Why hide your goal behind a fake motive? Nope, not for me.” The guy doesn’t say that it means tricking someone into thinking they’re going to have dinner and then leading them off for sex, and he doesn’t say that it means coercing someone into having sex by implying that they deserve it for buying dinner. As such, I have no idea why Hope is talking about fake motives and looking down on this. His description could easily apply to an established couple going to a nice dinner before going home and having sex, so Hope’s very negative reaction seems out of place. I think the author just did a poor job of explaining what that slang term actually meant, as I think the real definition would have come closer to warranting Hope’s negative response.
This was a frustrating read because of the TSTL and plot holes, so I definitely won’t be reading book 2.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
Book one in the brand new Harem of Misery series and what an intriguing start it is too. We meet Pandora who has been trapped inside the box she opened as punishment since it happened. Now for some reason the Gods take her out and challenge her to return to Earth where she will capture three sinful people in the box to earn her freedom. A babysitter is sent with her to keep her in line but there is a nice twist on that later in the story. The development is great explaining what is going on while building an incredible world for us to be in. Tossing Pandora back to reality with pretty much no preparation makes things interesting as she figures everything out. Enter the group of guys just full of sin to get fireworks and more and Pandora tries to take it all in. I am loving the way this story is moving and I am really looking forward to the next one to come out. Great for fans of the genre. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.
This one was a different type of story! When we think about Pandora we get only one image in our minds! Here it goes even further: what if after tousands od years Pandora Would be asked to bring 3 miseries to gods? How Would it look? What twists Would be placed There? Good read with mythology twists
I liked the premise of this - the Gods releasing Pandora from her box to retrieve some of the sins she'd released and put them back in the box.
Pandora herself didn't take any responsibility for her decision to open the box and had some pretty selfish views. The men are supposed to embody the sins but they didn't really fit and that was rather distracting for me.
Pandora's Box. We all know the story, right? Pandora opened a jar/box containing sickness, death and other evils which were then released into the world. Though she tried to close the container, only one thing was left behind – Hope. So, yes, we are all familiar with the story but we don't know Pandora. The woman who was tricked, who unleashed the miseries, who was severely punished and has suffered every moment since her one mistake. Now the gods have offered her a chance at freedom. All she has to do is collect three of the greatest sins of the world and she will be forgiven. Agreeing, Pandora and her guard are sent down to modern day earth to capture the sins. Little did Pandora understand how much the world had changed while she was locked away and how tempting the "sins" would be. She's still a plaything of the gods but this time Pandora is determined to win the game.
Pandora's Pain is wonderful. Pandora is a beautiful, sympathetic heroine with a fun, naughty streak. Imagine being locked away for what seems thousands of years full of unimaginable pain. Then when you finally have a second chance, you quickly realize that you are in over your head. You can't trust anyone, including yourself. You never meant any harm and you've paid dearly. The last thing you want is to be locked back up but hurting men you've quickly come to care about isn't an acceptable alternative. You know you can't sentence anyone to an eternity of the pain only you have experienced. Pandora's men are an interesting assortment. Alex, a disgraced god, sexy and moody; Ashton a rock star, hiding a damaged soul; Zavier an internet mogul, the cute boy next door; and Brock a model, reserved, unknown. I look forward to getting to know each one much better.
This was an entertaining start to a new series. It has so much possibility. Pandora is fantastic. She's unexpected at times. I love when she's impulsive (the robe, her porn) and hope that she continues with more of this behavior. The men are a group of yumminess that should be able to keep up with Pandora, barely. And the impossible task presents a challenge to bond them all together quickly. Love it. All that's needed is to discover Hope.

I had no idea what to do covet from this book however it is such an interesting concept for a new series by two very talented authors! From the very beginning this story captivated my attention and it kept it all the way through. Everyone knows the legend of Pandora’s box but in this story we get to know who Pandora is, how she has been tortured by Gods, how lonely she is! But we also get to see her quirky side, walking around in a silk bath robe, having naughty thoughts, watching porn for hours! She is very interesting and the reader becomes invested in her survival! Then you add in the guys...serious and broody God Alex, sweet rock star Ashton, serious Zavier and the male model Brock! They all bring something different to the story, however I want to get to know them more and to see if they can really help Pandora! This is an exciting start to the series, a quick read that sets the scene for follow on books...I think this series will get better and better with each book! I cannot wait to see what happens to the lovable Pandora and her guys. This is a highly recommended new series!!
I both loved and disliked to some extent this book.
What I loved: this is a seriously epic story! I love the concept of Pandora and her men out to defeat Zeus’ hold on her. Seriously, the storyline is wonderfully entertaining and intriguing.
Pandora is a pretty interesting character. I really liked that her personality is so confident in some aspects and vulnerable in others.
What I immensely disliked about this book is the almost complete lack of character development for the guys: Alex, Zavier, Brock, and Ashton. Her emotionally interactions with them are all fairly shallow, and yet they’re all enraptured with her and immediately on board to help her overcome a god. I get that they’re supposed to be drawn to her, but it was just kind of ridiculous.
I think that if the book was reworked to better develop her relationship to the guys, this would easily be a 5 Star book. Otherwise, it’s somewhat entertaining but lacking in areas where it matters most.
We all have heard the story of Pandora's box. This is a story that brings Pandora to the modern world. She was imprisoned by Zeus for opening her box and unleashing the miseries on the world. Zeus has chosen to let Pandora out and to have a chance at gaining her freedom. She has to put three people who exhibit the miseries that she unleashed into her box. By doing this she will earn her freedom. However, the compassionate side of Pandora is getting in her way of taking peoples lives and locking them away for Zeus' entertainment. Can Pandora and her men find away to defy Zeus' demands and not lose Pandora back to the box?
I really liked the strong development of Pandora's character. Her guys seem to have intricate personalities, but I would have liked to have seen a little more development of them. Alex is a mystery that I hope is deeply developed in the next book. The hook at the end has me eagerly awaiting the next release date.
I am big fan of greek mythology and it was a first time for me to read about pandora in some novel but i was gravelly disappointed. Though i did like the idea of Pandora and her box getting thrown into modern life but the storyline was not well plotted , the relationships between characters did not have a good foundation. I kinda thought there would be some sort of romantic relationship between pandora and alex but the whole book was about pandora fucking men or thinking about them sexually, like after lifes of imprisonment thats the only thing she would think of. Discovering that the story did not end and that there would be another book to follow made me even more disappointed for i needed it to end. Reading book 2 wont probably happen for me. The only thing i liked about it is that Alex happened to be the god of misery .
A chance at redemption for Pandora after a thousand years trapped inside her box of pain. The Gods offer her freedom if she can retrieve three miseries. They didn't mention that miseries came in the form of heart-pounding, sexy men. She also gets her very own guard dog God, Alexius, the god of misery. She has no problem targeting the men, but after getting to know them and her experience in the box, she is having a hard time capturing them. She is amazed by the way of the world after such a long time. She also has an advantage of what she calls "brain dump" from the Gods. Basically, instant knowledge of current events to allow her to fit in to society for her quest. Zeus is angered by her procrastination and punishes Alex. They need to find a way to appease the God without losing her men. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I love this different take on the Greek Gods, and how they took Pandora's slight. I have long loved the works of both A.K. Koonce and Laura Greenwood, so was really excited for this book to come out. And it did not disappoint!
Pandora's Pain is a great reverse harem story that incorporates all the things to keep me, as a reader, interested. This included some amazing twists and turns (like, just who is Alex?), some extremely hilarious scenes (all the nudity!), Pandora's sarcasm and wit, and some teasing of just what is to come from Pandora and her men (you know what scene I'm talking about!). I cannot wait to read Pandora's Envy.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author for review consideration**
I LOVE Greek mythology, so I really wanted to read this book and see what the authors would do with the Pandora story, even if things did get a little reverse harem-kinky in the process. However, whilst Pandora herself seems to be a very dirty minded, sex-obsessed woman, there's very little actual sexual content in this book. And the hilarity of the contrast between characters, the drama of Pandora's quest, and the intriguing development of the relationships make this a very good read that I can definitely recommend. Although, like Pandora, I have been left wondering about those piercings.... NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions
I loved this story but this one is just a bit too short I want to know more, but in saying that I did enjoy this story. Everyone knows the story of Pandora well this is after she had opened the box, the gods are giving Pandora a chance at freedom all she has to do is collect 3 of the greatest sins of the whole world and once she does Pandora will be forgiven and earn her freedom. But what Pandora didn’t expect was to fall for the men that she was expected to capture, how can she capture these men in exchange for her freedom when they will lose theirs. This is a fantastic story and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book, I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
Pandora has always been one of my favorite Greek myths, and this is an amazing new look on her story, from her point of view. I really enjoyed this quick read, Pandora's character is funny, and charming, even through her carelessness born of centuries of being trapped and alone. Although I didn't feel like I got to know the guys very well, except for Alex, whom I adored! I'm looking forward to reading the next book in Pandora's story and getting to know the other men in her life.
Great spin on the Pandora’s Box story. Pandora is still alive after thousands of years. After she opened the box, the Gods trapped her in it. They give her a chance at freedom. All she has to do is collect three sins. Unfortunately, the sins are tied to people, which means she has to take their lives to get the sins. Things start to go awry as soon as Pandora is sent to Earth. She is very funny as she is learning about the world as she goes. I liked all 3 guys even though we don’t get to know them to well. I hope there is more backstory in the second book.
I was not sure what to expect when I started reading this but I am very impressed! A great idea for a story, Pandora’s box. It has been executed well, I love Pandora’s spunk and fiestiness, especially given her past. The love the interactions between her and Alex, and the other characters are also great.. I enjoyed the twists and the plot that I did not see coming, it’s like a fun mythology lesson, and I am very looking forward to the next book as I need to see what happens next
I love mythology of all kinds, so I am game for any book that is drawn from it. This story, based on the myth of Pandora, is very well put together. The plot is good one, and I even found myself laughing out loud at times. This is definitely a slow burn reverse harem...very slow. But, that just makes me eager for the next book!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Pandora is offered a chance for freedom by Zeus - but she has to destroy three sinners' lives to gain it. She has no idea of how much earth has changed while she has been imprisoned - or how she will be affected by Alex, who the gods have sent to 'help' her. When she meets Xavier and Ashton, she really isnt sure whether she will be able to fulfill her task

I'm really enjoying the mix of Greek mythology and modern times. I really like how Pandora is settling into the 21st century and finding happiness when she's really supposed to be causing misery. The guys are all great and I'm liking the fact that they aren't just throwing themselves at her and they are pretty great too. I'm enjoying the way that everything is going so far and I can't wait for the next book to come out.
What an amazing read! I just love how independent Pandora is and at the same time naive. The world has drastically changed since she’s last been out. But she’s not giving up and learning to adapt as best as she can with help of sexy guys! I love the realization she comes to the guys and the box - which is a nono 😁
Pandora’s pain is a great start to a new series. I really like the blend of writing styles between Greenwood and Koonce. Pandora is a great leading lady. She is a bit of a rebel and has been through a lot, but also still has some innocence to her after being locked away for years. The story is a slow burn, and I can’t wait to see how relationships develop with each of the guys!
Such a wicked twist on the story of Pandora's Box!! I love the fact that the authors put the twist onto the story that they did. It put Pandora and the Gods into a different light and made me feel sorry for Dora. I can not wait to see what is in store for the next book in this series! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book
I really like this take on Pandora's mythology.I love how even though she was stuck in the box for thousands of years as punishment for opening it, she is still a strong character. I really like how even though she wants to be free of the Gods and the box she is still going to fight for herself and her miseries. I can't wait to see what happens in Pandora's Envy!
truly love this book got the connection between Pandora and Alex he is very witty for someone who has been locked up for years. She has to find misery to replace her in the box and they offer her freedom. Truly love the way the story develops and how the plot thickens cannot wait for Pandora's and the to be released.
I received an ARC copy of this book about the Gods and Pandora and I have to say it is very uniquely written. In this version of Pandora, you actually get to know her has a person instead of just being a woman who opened a forbidden box of sins. Her character is fun, quirky, strong, vulnerable and determined which I like. I cannot wait to read the 2nd book.
An interesting idea of Pandora trying to win her freedom and walking in our time. She definitely has a huge hurdle to achieve but the gods are not going to make anything easy. Can she trust the one god who is supposed to help her? What if the men she meets? Lots to go on and we won’t know what will happen until book two. Things almost heat up but she can never catch a break.
I Recommend this book for OVER 18 DUE TO CONTENT. This was a great read that kept me hooked. This storyline is intriguing and full of mystery. Pandora wants to be free of the torment of being imprisoned in a box. In order for her to be free the God's want her to do a task for them but can she trust them?
