Payback is a bitch.
Mankind has endured two waves of alien invasions and isn't waiting for a third.

But when humanity's great invasion turns into a calamitous disaster, it falls to Sergeant Lucky Lee Savage and his hand-picked team of warriors to lead the stranded human forces through a strange and treacherous universe bristling with hostility at every turn.

With the help of his overworked AI, a ghost from his past, and a demon that won't leave him alone, Lucky is determined to see out his mission, even if it means leaving a bloody trail of destruction in his wake. Especially if it means leaving a bloody trail of destruction in his wake.

Luck might not be on his side. But mayhem is never far away.

Gritty. Fast-Paced. Addictive. You'll love this high-octane military sci-fi because it's the love child of "Starship Troopers" and "Jason Bourne."

"We know exactly why the Reds are rushing to this nebula in the middle of nowhere like Malby to a red-light district,” she said. “There’s an asteroid belt inside. One of the rocks is … special, shall we say. We lost contact with one of our contract players.” “Your what?” Lucky asked. “We’ve sent over two hundred contract parties out to search the NewVerse. Apparently it started the instant the Great Corridor opened. Don’t give me that Bambi-ass look. I wasn’t in charge then, but I would have approved it. We needed intel. Still do. They find anything good, they get a bounty. They find something amazing, they retire very rich.” “Works in the outer worlds.” The floating head managed to shrug without shoulders. “Exactly. When there’s a gold rush, people rush to the gold. It works.” “So you got a hot tip.”"

Lucky and his team (which Malby now calls “The Lucky Bastards”) are off on another “do or die” mission. This is book four in the series and not best place to begin.

Lucky’s universe consists of The Empire, to which he owes allegiance. He is a special kind of marine equipped with A. I.and “nano medbots” which can regenerate organs, bones and tissue. A service for which they are frequently needed.

The Empire is one of a number of powerful forces which include The Cardinal Order. They have temporarily formed a coalition because of a threat from a powerful alien civilization. This doesn’t go well or last long.

Barnes turned a cold eye to Dawson. “I don’t know you, sir, but I know what you’ve done here, and I thank you. The Cardinal Order thanks you. But you are an agent of the Empire, and we no longer have need of your services.” “We’re partners, Barnes. Or maybe you don’t know how a coalition works?” Barnes smiled. “As we speak, the Cardinal Order is rescinding its partnership with the coalition.”"

Profane, scatalogical, and filled with constant bloodshed, James demonstrates his talents with imaginative weaponry and clever patter.
This book is more of a transitional piece, so I am deducting half a point. 3.5

Another solid entry in the series. As the new Emperor takes her throne, the plot gets slightly more engaging with just a dash of intrigue, but let's not overstate it, this remains an 80's-style action-adventure, where blood and guts provide the sole substitute for quality dialogue.

**** SPOILER ALERT ****
"Lucky Forever: ( Lucky's Marines | Book Four )" is yet another wild, but fun ride on the rollercoaster that is Lee "Lucky" Savage's life.
James, as usual, shows his deft touch at world building and character development as the Emperor, April, sends Lucky's team on a seemingly suicidal mission. The twists come as heavily as the action in this wild romp as Lucky and krew come face to face with a race that terrify the ever living tar 'n nicotine out of the Da'Hune. They also discover that the old adage of "The enemy of my enemy is perforce my friend" is not true in the case of the Dalmuk. I recommend this whole series and James has a boxset out now with books One to Four in it. Why not grab the boxset and binge read?
This review is my own honest opinion.

Lucky Forever delivers another exhilarating chapter in the Lucky's Marines series. Sergeant Lucky Lee Savage leads his team through a universe fraught with danger, facing alien threats and internal demons. The narrative is fast-paced and action-packed, making it an enjoyable read for fans of military science fiction. While it may not delve deeply into complex themes, the book excels in providing entertainment through its engaging plot and dynamic characters. Joshua James continues to craft a series that is both thrilling and accessible, perfect for readers seeking a high-energy adventure one day read.

Non-stop action but most of it was Marines getting chewed up and almost instantly getting healed/regenerated. The plot wasn’t clear. If you like Oorah! though, you’ll like this.

This is I think one of the better books in the series. Lucky does not seem to be doing everything. This seems to be more of a team effort. Good book

James keeps up his remarkable ability to flood the pages with action. His marines have implanted nanobots that can repair cellular damage, even regrowing missing parts, allowing him to put his characters through a remarkable amount of abuse. That rebuilding takes time, though, so injury still affects the fights and becomes a new challenge for the marines to fight around. It really lets him amp up the danger, often sticking his characters into situations that it seems they couldn’t possibly survive. Don’t worry though–he doesn’t rely solely on his characters’ indestructibility. While it’s true that Lucky is well known for having all of his plans go wrong right out of the gate, there’s plenty of cleverness and wild shenanigans keeping things interesting.

As always the characters are fun. Malby is still being… well, Malby. Jiang is gone, but not forgotten. I did feel like I was missing something–maybe there’s a short story in-between books three and four?–because suddenly there was a romantic history between Jiang and Lucky that I didn’t remember from before. Maybe I forgot a brief mention or something. The Hate doesn’t pop up as much in this installment, and Lucky’s definitely not doing so well with the promotion. While the alien Da’hune do show up, they aren’t the main antagonist this time. Instead there’s a new kind of alien who might be the key to defeating the Da’hune–if they can be convinced not to take out humanity, too. They have their own abilities and issues, and both the Empire and the Reds want to court them.

I definitely enjoyed this installment in Lucky’s saga. I really enjoy good military SF, particularly when there’s plenty of action involved, and Joshua James delivers.
