Got a couple of chapters in, and couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to continue.

Remember all those cheesy full of clichés sci-fi/action b-movies os 80's and 90's? Well this is it. You have super-villians so evil that you can't do anything else but to dislike them. Why the villians hate humans so much is beyond me since no real reason is given. And the heroes are so brave bordering to stupid...

The dialogues are also as taken from bad b-movie with bad humor and even worst sentiments.

But there are still some good things here like the idea itself yet it is not enough to rate this book better then 2/5.

Heavy Going

Having previously read a number of books by this author I was looking forward to a good read again. Sadly disappointed. In reality this three book omnibus should only have required one book to tell it's story. I almost gave up halfway through the first book and only finished it because I'm a stubborn bastard and hate to give up on anything, but I really felt as though I'd wasted my time in making the effort. I certainly won't be reading the rest of this series.

I trudged through these books. Unfortunately there were some interesting bits interspersed with loads and loads of repetition as though the reader couldn’t manage to keep the previous narrative in their heads. It made for a very boring read at times.

Don’t think I’ll be reading any more of his books as they are really quite juvenile.

Meh

Was getting into the book, was liking the story and then got to chapter 5. Could not get past the Grugs and Weegles, visions of Muppets came to my mind that spoiled the rest. Not my cup of tea, wanted something more serious.

Imaginative but repetitive.

The storyline works but the author ends up repeating the same information as if the reader wouldn’t recall it. The vulgarity becomes pedantic, overused, and cumbersome.

Did not finish.
Poorly thought out or glossed over science.

overlong and to much unnecessary grotesque descriptions. Did not like the characters enough to continue reading the series

Repetitive - was this originally released as a series of novellas? That would explain the constant rehashing of things...this likely could have been reduced by a third if it wasn't for that. The use of aliens types pretty much solely based on Earth creatures was tiresome and not imaginative at all. Spiders, crabs, snakes, mushrooms all have their own intelligent species out there? Oh please...

Setting the repetitiveness, and the unimaginative aliens aside, the core story wasn't bad, just had too much filler. And there was good character development. One thing I felt was weak though was how the main characters reacted to the horrors around them...they seemed to shrug off fellow humans being vaporized a few feet from them, or the horrors of the scorpion death camps without much affect. Also the story read as a series of events occurring one after another over a shorter period, it wasn't always plain that months, even years had passed.

Lastly, back to 'repetitive' - the Earth Song was pure silliness after the third or forth time being added with all it's lyrics, same with the Oath.

Pure stubbornness made me slog through these books, mainly because I tried to concentrate on that core story and continue on after rolling my eyes at the other stuff, but I don't think I'll want to continue further in these tales...

Distracting Logic and Practicality

The Author did a great job on the plot, evolving the storyline and drawing in characters as needed. I thought the characters were the best. So many pulled in, in a short period of time; but were well developed to standalone. I liked how the story was told through these multiple characters. The author’s scene settings were better than average. Practicality was where the story lagged. Apparently the hundreds and hundreds of Alien species all spoke English, while Humans were treated as rats and considered pests. These humans had been gone from Earth for 2,000 years, and while without resources, manage to build a fleet of star ships, and feed thousands. At one point they used some gasoline. They seem to have an unlimited supply of water, food, clothing, and ammunition. And there was so much more. It’s these practical things that distracted me from truly enjoying this series. I would look elsewhere for your next sci-fi read.

This set includes the first three books in the Children of Earthrise series. These should not be read as standalones and this set makes it easy to read them in the order written (though there are more books to this series than just these three). There is a lot of graphic violence and some sexual scenes so 18+. This is an interesting series as the Heirs of Earth battle to save humans and to find their lost homeland of Earth. After two thousand years, they want to return home. But there are many obstacles standing in their way...including another species who has claimed Earth as their own and don't want the humans returning. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series!

What a wonderfully fantastical story line. Children of Earthrise is the continuing saga of humanity's search for their homeland, Earth. After two thousand years, humans are considered pests, at the bottom of the food chain among galactic alien creatures. To many humans, earth is a mythical planet, to others a reality worth fighting and dieing for. Character relationships are an integral part of the success or failure of the "heirs of earth" in leading humanity home. Will they find earth and even if they do, will it still be the beautiful blue marble or a dry, dead planet?

Better than some that I’ve read lately

There was some good story line and character development in this series. I appreciate that. The battle scenes were a turnoff, just far too improbable for my suspension of disbelief to overcome. Gazillions of superior enemy troops and/or vessels against a handful and the handful survives over and over again. Meh. I found myself skimming through those pages to get back to the really decent story lines with some interesting twists. Worth a read, but I won’t be following the rest of the series.

Review of: Children of Earthrise; Books 1-3

Not your typical story of sci-fi reading battle after battle to return to earth. With a little fantasy added for good measure. The concept was interesting the characters strong. Though I believe the 3 book series could have been reduced to two books.

One of the best

Children of Earthrise was one of the best books I have read
in my ninety years. Just when I thought all was over some thing
or someone comes to the rescue. I can’t wait to read the rest
of the story. I do not have many si fi friends but I have no
worries in recommending the books. Bruce Miles

The story was good for a while but there were too many obstacles in their path. The characters were well described and their ordeals were harrowing but it was all a bit too much for me. The scorpions were too strong with no reliable weaknesses to exploit but where did their technology come from and where was it built ? This is what Humans should have been hitting.

Hard to stop reading

Great story. Little off in some of the modern day references, I thought. But you couldn't help but lie the characters. Some very funny dialogue between different characters. Hard to my down once I got into the story.

A decent series

Unlike many authors he brings a fresh perspective to star travel and the human experience. Especially in the aliens that he introduces in this series.

What a saga

The books are for me a bit hard to put down once started. You want to know what comes next as you start to care about what happens to the characters. It took me a while to get into the first book but then I just wanted to know what happened next and ended up enjoying the experience, though they are not uplifting stories. That is the reason for 4 stars.

Daniel Arenson’s follow-up series to Earthrise.

As I continue reading books written by Daniel Arenson, I gain more and more respect for the writings by this author. Daniel has a good, strong sense concerning building good, strong descriptions for all of the settings of the series, along with dynamic descriptions for each of the characters, He continues building the descriptions, character traits and motivating events throughout the entire series of books.

The “Children of Earthrise” books create an exciting galaxy for these stories to build upon, and I find myself unable to put down my reader when I plan to, and find excuses to read “Just one more chapter” on and on into the evenings.
