Elizabeth Horton-Newton has been called the Seductress of Suspense because she draws readers into her stories, builds the suspense, and just when the solution seems to be obvious, she pulls the rabbit out of the hat and reveals a dark truth. Her lifelong interest in the Kennedy assassination conspiracy resulted in her first novel, "View From the Sixth Floor: An Oswald Tale". With the release of her second book, "Riddle", she once again tackles a social issue; the illegal adoption of First Nations babies separated from their families. Small town prejudices against people of color and "outsiders" result in a unique friendship between two young people. Weaving a romantic thriller around the issues, she creates rich characters in all her writing, drawing the reader into their lives. With her education in Criminal Psychology, Sociology, and Media Communications she offers a unique insight into how criminals think and how society responds to their crimes. Volunteering in local Domestic Violence groups in her hometown, she likes to confront social problems in her stories. Elizabeth currently lives in a 100-year old haunted house with her husband, writer Neil Douglas Newton, and her dog, Scout (named for a character in "To Kill a Mockingbird"). Not limited to a single genre, she has written erotic romance, "Carved Wooden Heart" (with the mysterious Starla Hartless), and the suspenseful "Stolen Gypsy", as well as novelettes through Electric Eclectic Books. She is currently working on a new novel, "Blood on Murder Highway", loosely based on the murders and disappearances of indigenous women in the Pacific Northwest. Her new crime noir novella will be available winter 2019. When she isn't writing she is usually traveling or taking photographs and often both simultaneously. Wow, what a ride! This is by no means the first thriller I've read by Elizabeth Horton Newton, nor will it be the last. Do not expect any spoilers from this review, or me retelling the events! Just grab it and read it. It's worth it! When you read an action thriller and feel breathless, as if you've just been there or at least watched it in a fabulous 3D cinema, that's just perfection. This one had me biting my nails, staying up all night to get to the bottom of all plots and subplots, on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen to my favourite characters. Much as I loved the villains in Riddle and Old Habits, I love, love, love the heroes and heroines of this book! Young Terza is adorable, just on the verge between a teenager and a woman, thrown into life's adversity which forms her faster than she'd ever hoped. Tristan is strong, charming and supportive, and the balance Newton achieves between the two of them, and in developing their relationship, is wonderfully intertwined with the entire plot, filled with social issues, political intrigue and the criminal millieu. McCray and Nora, including Vanessa and the girls from Nora's haven, they all paint a strong setting in which each detail makes a difference. Feel like wandering into a breathlessly intense action story, with a fantastic couple at the centre and mind-blowing intrigue surrounding them? Grab this one.
I love a good thriller, and this one delivers from every angle. The main characters are each formidable in their own way. Terza, Tristan, and Peter are not people who like to take a backward step, no matter what odds they face. The supporting cast of policemen, doctors, FBI agents, gypsy and Mexican cartel gangsters combine to make this a page-turning cracker of a book. Filled with high-tempo action and romance this is a 'must read' book.
I love thrillers and crime stories with a bit of romance in them and this one did not disappoint. It's all of that and a whole lot more.
Told in the first person by Terza as the main character, I liked how it occasionally switched to third person as the story was told from a different point of view and in a different chapter so it wasn't confusing.
With a tragic accident that involves her parents, seventeen-year-old Terza Blackstone is catapulted rapidly from the steady routine of family life into the unknown. Having been questioned at the police station, she is taken home by her hard-nosed attorney, Vanessa Duffy, who wants to petition for guardianship. Judging by the aggressive activity of reporters at the scene, there is something very sinister about this case.
There is some interesting back story involving secret pasts and I wanted to know more. Someone wants Terza out of the way and the action and tension begins to climb. There are lots of suspects and few clues, a complex story that has more twists and turns than a pretzel.
Once in a while a character like Terza comes along that gets under your skin and refuses to let go. I liked her at the outset; smart, stubborn and quirky, not to mention a fan of Lindsey Stirling. I think she and I would get along. As Vanessa takes Terza back to childhood, memories begin to surface of an unsettled background where she has never spent more than one year in any school.
As the plot moves forward, Terza comes face-to-face with the stark realization that nothing in her past life adds up. Even with new-found friends to help her, she is never far from the agencies of law enforcement or from those who might want to harm her. When the truth unfolds, the tragic thing about this book is the choices Terza must make. Her tale at the end of the book brings a fresh perspective on abandonment and how there is only one person who can set her free.
Horton-Newton has created a layered, gripping story around characters that readers will root for. Her crisp prose crackling with tension, reads at a breakneck pace and as a naturally gifted storyteller, this novel is the perfect "fix" for the mystery/suspense aficionado.
This story was such a tollercoaster! MLE sure to have your tissues ready. Very much a suspence/drama story with a tiny bit of romance mixed in. No spice at all. But such a twisting story with new revelations constantly. Seriously couldn’t put this book down.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
You don't ever see what's coming next for Terza. She started out as an innocent high schooler and life did not stop changing for her. Even I didn't know who to trust in this story.
