Great Character/World Building

I don’t think I can say this particular installment had any serious revelations in it. However, there is one very important tid-bit of info dropped on our Hero and the Devil King - one that will obviously have a serious impact on future events, and on their continual character development. This volume is particularly focused on the changing interpersonal relationships between the entire cast - including more of the staff at Mgronald’s! We also meet Emi’s former Dokodemo co-worker, Maki who has a bit of a surprising personality. These three are used to provide somewhat different and humorous angles on the relationships between Maou, Chiho, and Emi specifically. While we get a nice dose of most characters, we don’t really get much in the way of Sariel appearances. There are some references to his character and a little reminder that he’s still obsessively in love with Kisaki, but not a genuine role in this installment. We also see more of the Hatagaya Station Mgronald’s staff! Nevertheless, the expansion of the cast of characters, is refreshing and also fills out the world a little more; and who doesn’t like more world building? It’s easy to write this volume off as a purely character-driven one that’s simply focused on the dynamics between everyone, however(!) there are important events that take place which will most definitely have a great impact on the plot going forward as well as Maou and Emi’s ongoing struggle to reconcile the people they are in Japan and their identities as the Devil King and the Hero. I would not skip this volume if your plan is to continue reading the series.

I wish this show hadn't ended. These books have such good material. Emilia and the gang are back, having finally tracked down and caught Emilia's mother. The gang on Earth keeps growing and growing. This book deals with the final piece in Emi's conflicted ideals--the fact that her mother used them all as pieces on a chess board to accomplish some unknown motive. I liked that rather than hear her out, Emi does everything she can to avoid her. And of course, Mauo does as well.

The friendship between Emi and Maou continues to grow, which is again a major focus of this volume.

Lucifer has recovered and is finally back in all his lazy glory, nagging his roommates to, you know, do things for him. I suspect he knows something about the angels he isn't telling the group, given he used to be Gabriel's boss... He and Bell once again provide some fun comic relief, and there was almost a point where it seemed Bell might join the MgRonald's group, but I suppose too many shenanigans would close that place down. I am impressed with how the author juggles so many side character without distracting from the novel, and actually adding to it. As always, I love the prose. Very fluid and fun.

This volume continues the build up to the next confrontation arc. We get to see more character development for Emi and for her relationship with Maou, some of which causes consternation to Chiho. Emi starts working with Maou and Chiho and there is drama to be had. Nothing made for the C, but real drama if your sworn enemy is suddenly your superior at work and training you. Maou's character is starting to shine through too. Be it dealing with Emi or the way he crafts the agreement to talk to Laila, there is more to him than we've seen. Even more I suspect that what we saw in the Ente Isla rescue arc that just ended. Maou seems to know a lot more than he is telling anyone and Crestia Bell starts to suspect that. There isn't any action to speak of, but there is a big setup for things to come. The breadcrumbs are left behind. It is really nice how the author sets the pace with his arcs. You have a lot of action and high stakes and then a slow build up that in a very organic way defines the characters better so that the stakes in the action parts have weight to them. The characters and this way of developing the arcs is what really draws me to this series. Though I get the feeling we are coming close to the end of things.

Emi and Maou have some unprecedented development in their relationship in this book, which I really enjoyed. The book also takes time to hint at what could happen to the Sephirah if they don't go back to Ente Isla. Aside from that, Laila attempts to make all our faves risk life and limb to save a world that's done nothing for them, and Maou actually addresses the implications of this, in a pretty convincing way. I'm really excited to read the next volume. I love all of these characters! The plot also definitely seems to be moving towards its conclusion.

Despite being the twelfth book, I feel I will remember this book in particular out of the other books in the series. This book has a conversation entailing what it means to have power, strength, and those who rely on people with said power and strength. It's a conversation I haven't read much in stories. Witnessing it was exhilarating and it made me feel the emotions present within the respective characters. I feel that conversation alone made this a 5/5 star book for me.

Honestly, this is probably my least favorite volume so far. The characters are waffling on an upcoming dilemma and while I understand completely why it was approached in this manner, it wasn't as enjoyable to read for me. Still has some fun moments with the characters and introduces more of Maou's and Emi's Earth coworkers, which was interesting. Hoping the next volume gets things moving again.

I can't help but feel that this volume is too slow, and stalls the plot more than it should. There are interesting events taking place overall, but I guess it should come as no surprise at this point that the progression is very uneven. It is almost completely focused on the characters, but their interactions are not fulfilling enough.
