Chaos Shifter

Rate this book
Two Outcasts United By Fate. Two Terrible Secrets. One Incredible Destiny. As war convulses the ancient realm of Wyldaroon, powerful Dragon Marshals rush to choose sides in the sweeping conflict between Aranya the Star Dragoness and her nemesis, the unstoppable Marshal Thoralian. Islands fall. Nations crumble. Predatory Shapeshifters swoop to snatch the spoils from amidst the devastation.

When Asturbar, a hard-bitten Infantry Commander of the Mistral Fires, is forced into a desperate act of thievery to deny Azhukazi the Necromancer Dragon the magical artefacts he covets, he unleashes an unimaginable chain of events. Conquered. Exiled for life. Banished to an isolated oasis in the endless Doldrums, the Island-desert. For all intents and purposes, he is a dead man.

Yet what he discovers in the wilderness will change his life forever.

Her beauty is fey. Her youthful power, a reviled enigma of yore. Beguiled by the undeniable lure of Chaos itself, Asturbar faces a stark choice. To stand against Azhukazi’s rampant evil, he must ally himself with a lethal, beautiful Chaos Shifter – all it might cost, is his soul.

A story in Aranya’s timeline, this full-length novel can be read standalone. The exact sequence of events overlaps with the events of Song of the Storm Dragon (Shapeshifter Dragons Book 3) and Beautiful Fury (Shapeshifter Dragons Book 4) – but as noted, this tale is complete in its own right and there is no need to read prequel books or series to fully enjoy it.

Marc Secchia's latest epic saga adds an incredible installment in the journey through the Cloudlands once more. Drawing on the ever-expanding and immersive mythology he has meticulously crafted over the various stories, Chaos Shifter is a new tale that delivers with the same enchanting panache of its predecessors and ropes you in from page one until the last.

The story follows the tale of Astubar, a rambunctious soldier who starts off the story as a diamond in the rough character. However, his brazen and steely initial demeanor forms a shell over a kind-hearted man who loves deeply. At its heart that is what Chaos Shifter is truly about, a love story that goes from the feelings of roaming through a wilderness in isolation until you should be so lucky to encounter someone just as strange as yourself. The story takes us from the coy stages of infatuation to the deep love two people develop that would compel them to go the ends of the world for one another. The journey is breathtaking and emotive. The best moments are in the tenderly intimate exchanges between Asturbar and his beloved Iridana. Despite the fantasy trappings with which their relationship is presented, their tale tells a story that is utterly relatable. Each of this unlikely coupling are oddities and estranged from family and society, each feels a certain level of uneasiness with their very selves. Yet within each other, they find solace and a bond that makes them truly a force to be reckoned with. Be it Asturbar charging into battle with enchanted armor shifted from his beloved or Iridana swallowing her fear and accepting Asturbar's aid to confront her tumultuous past, they find the power to rise to any challenge within their love for one another. That in itself is a truly beautiful love story that keeps you interested.

In true Secchian spirit, we are enraptured by breathtaking vistas that transports you into an immersive world and flows seamlessly within itself. But the greatest marvel is how Secchia connects this to other stories in the series with the reappearance of several beloved characters who have carved their way into the world's mythology.

Despite being a bit hefty to read, Chaos Shifter is well worth that read. A beautiful love story between two unlikely but adorable oddballs, a journey of self-discovery across enchanting fantasy landscapes, more dragons than you could imagine, with powerful action sequences and a surprising twist in the final act, I would highly recommend Chaos Shifter to any draconic fantasy enthusiast!

Chaotic Shenangins

Iridiana is an iridium dragon shifter plus.
Asturbar is a rough and ready soldier,
Both for very different reasons are exiled to the same area of the Doldrums.

A touching friendship forms. With one terrified girl, so frightened of herself and her magic that she cannot maintain one shape for long. The other half of the friendship (that turns quite quickly into something else entirely) a decidedly worldly and rather single minded soldier.

From fairly comfortable positions in society, to exiles , to rejoining the world and the battles being fought against the evil Thoralian.
They join forces with Aranya and her band of mismatched heroes, only for Iridiana to discover real family.

A complex and thoroughly enthralling tale.
