Marc is a South African-born dragon masquerading as an author, who loves writing about dragons and Africa, preferably both at the same time. He's the author of over 40 fantasy books in 5 languages including 10 rip-roaring dragon fantasy bestsellers.

His latest releases are Khyrial and the King, an absorbing Fantasy Romance and the hilarious epic fantasy Call me Dragon which won gold in the 2021 IPPY Book Awards for best Fantasy novel.

When he's not writing about Africa or dragons Marc can be found travelling to remote locations. He thinks there's nothing better than standing on a mountaintop wondering what lies over the next horizon.

Hi Shannon,

Thank you for asking! Well, I always wanted to be a writer but it took me a long time to find my groove and courage. When I was young, I was the kid who took the haiku form and turned it into an epic 20-poem haiku story. I wrote several books during my teens, utterly unmarketable, but good practice! After going the rounds of of being rejected by traditional publishers in 2012 I took the decision to self-publish. It took a year to find success but I stuck at it and stuck to my plans.

Choosing ideas is a tough one. I also dream a lot of mine and I have tons more than I could write in the next 10 years. Ideally you want the idea that sparks your imagination, keeps you awake at night, and has a great niche in your genre with a unique selling point. But I'd encourage you to make that choice and just run with it. Don't look back. I still have self-doubts after 13 books and I expect they'll always be there.

Thank you for your encouragement!

Hi Nikkole,

The slightly tongue-in-cheek answer is, I'm developing a couple of allied series so the next book to consider reading might be Dragonfriend (available for preorder now, release date April 11th) - which is set in the same world. Also, The Pygmy Dragon ties in to Aranya's story. I'll be working on the sequel of Pygmy Dragon next, and then after that, the sequel to Shadow Dragon. So realistically I'm thinking late autumn, in reply to your original question :-). I hope that's Ok with you!

The other piece of news I have is that the Aranya audiobook is almost complete. I expect it to be released within the next couple of weeks.

Thanks!
Marc

“You think!” cried Mama. “She’s just a-looking after your backside and mine.” But at least her arms let up. Shioni could breathe again.

“It’d take five of her to look after your backside.”

Mama seemed to find his rudeness amusing. A beaming smile lit up her round face like the sun leaping above the hills of Abyssinia in the morning. “Better a plump, well-padded rump, than the rear end of a skinny goat like you, eh?”
