I love these books. This phase is not the easiest to read books to Henry, but he pays attention to these and likes to lift the flaps himself.

At once fascinatingly simplistic, as well as deceptive — operating under the guise of ‘just another toddler book’ amongst any hundreds of thousands that bear a resemblance to this book itself: Pop-up Peekaboo! I Love You is a milestone not only in the modern history of children’s literature, but it also serves as a key focal point to understanding both the work that influenced it, and the countless writers influenced by Peekaboo itself.

I could quote Shakespeare until the cows come home; I could point to Plato’s Symposium and its naked assault on Greece’s debauchery and degenerate, absurd moral standards in the face of Eros; I could point to Kierkegaard, or reference Rousseau; but the fundamental answer to all of this is just to simply read the book yourself, and come to your own conclusions about it. At this point, any theory aimed at explaining this work should be readily heard by all.

The book itself is lavished in vivid imagery and the ever-entertaining paper mechanics that go into constructing a pop-up page. The reader may be easily distracted by the all-consuming, visceral effect that the book’s visual architecture has, and easily miss the foreshadowing. Said foreshadowing begins immediately at first glance, on the first page. With each successive page that the reader ventures on to, the implication of some ominous, impending event becomes only more and more readily apparent.

I will refrain from going too much further in-depth, both for the sake of not spoiling the ending for any prospective readers of this work, but also for my own sake as I have a hundred other points I could expound upon. I will leave you with this thought only: one day, albeit perhaps a day far into the future, Peekaboo! will be recognized generally for the landmark it is. Any erudite reader could affirm, this book is one of the select handful of all books written that is able to maintain a steady application of tension, increasing the pressure page by page, until at last reaching an ending both shocking (for the time) and explosive.

Truly, I cannot recommend this book enough, both for the casual reader seeking entertainment or excitement, as well as the intellectual bookworm who makes it their mission to tackle all of the great works in the history of fiction. Do not miss this one!
