She never thought she’d see him again…this is a second chance sports romance in the Wild Men Series.
Sky
Colton Wild isn’t just the famous football player everyone sees on their television screen.
I met Colton one summer vacation when we lined up on opposite sides of a flag football field. He was the cocky kid with clear blue eyes and a constant smirk. When he picked me up over his shoulder and ran with me the length of the field, I wanted to hate him.
But somehow we were the last two left around the campfire that night. We talked for hours under the stars. And when he kissed me, I didn’t want him to stop.
The next morning, I left.
I thought I’d never see him again.
And for ten years, I didn’t.
Colton
Sky Rosewood was the one that got away, the fiery redhead with a temper to match.
It felt like way more than a teenage crush, but what did I know back then? Plus she gave me a fake phone number, not to mention a false last name. I tried everything to find her, but it was like she’d disappeared into the ethers.
Ten years later, I’m out for my morning beach run and I crash into…Sky Rosewood, just before she gets knocked out by an errant wave. I try to be a gentleman and give her mouth to mouth, but she comes to and tells me off, her temper still intact. And so is my crush.
Except now Sky’s a woman. A beautiful woman who agrees to give me the right number this time.
I’ve got my second chance with the woman I never forgot, and there’s no way I’m letting her get away again.
USA Today Bestselling author Melissa Belle writes about smart, sassy women and the hot, sexy men who want them. She spent years in the field of psychology before writing her first novel on the train in Europe. She often works through her story ideas while hiking with her husband or hanging out with her two kitties. She loves road trips and songwriting. And cupcakes.
💕How can a teenage insta-love become a painstakingly hesitant romance ten years later?😕 May 1, 2018 Format: Kindle Edition 3.5 stars
I was a bit torn on the rating. The author is a very fine writer grammatically and stylistically, but the story just never grabbed me. The premise of this second chance romance was interesting, but Colton, the hero professional football player, was a bit of a doormat in his interactions with the heroine, and the heroine's angstful background was revealed so slowly that I eventually almost did not care. Overall, it felt a bit one-note to me, and too drawn out.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Journalist Skylar Rosewood waded into the ocean trying to interview an artist when she was knocked off her feet by a rogue wave. Skylar was rescued by professional football player Colton Wild who had been passing by her attempted interview. Skylar and Colton recognized each other from a camp in Colorado when her brother’s had dragged her into a flag football game with Colton and others staying at the campground when her family was on the run from her father. They stayed at the last night campfire talking for a long time after the football game.
Colton was so used to women chasing him he didn’t know what to do when Skylar wasn’t interested in seeing him because of the way her father abuse her family until they went on the run from him. Skylar was so used to not letting anybody in that she had a hard time opening the door for Colton.
I’m hoping this isn’t the only book following the Wild cousins because I would like to read more!
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
I really enjoyed this book. It was your typical romance book but it talked about a lot of hard topics. It showed how being open and talking about mental health can really change a relationship for the better.
Audiobook Review: Colton (Wild Men, #1) by Melissa Belle (Author), Jeremy York (Narrator), Lacy Laurel (Narrator)
Colton brings a hint of sentiment to a risque romance. Sky is the girl that got away. Colton is the boy she can't seem to forget. What began as a teenage infatuation takes ten years to blossom into more. With the written talents of a hopeless romantic like Melissa Belle and the suave vocal stylings of Laurel and York, it's easy to understand why this duo lays claim to the heart.
I was really intrigued by the premise of this story, but felt slightly let down by the follow through. Colton and Skylar are now grown ups meeting again. Colton is a big football star and Skylar is making her name as a journalist. A chance meeting and what started as a high school crush ten years ago only seems like a stronger connection after the time apart. Colton and Sky have each been through a lot in the past and on paper seem to have grown successful and moved on with their lives. But they talk and act like they are still young high schoolers and the drama and angst feels very young also. I listened to the audiobook and the narration was very good. The narrators are what kept me interested and listening til the end.
First book in new "Wild Men" series by a new-to-me author. A quick fun-to-read second chance sports-related romance with a splash of angst and a bit of suspense, too. Both characters carried some tragedy in their lives -- but it didn't overpower the story in any manner. Nothing that smacked me with new or exciting -- pretty much a standard second chance romance with a star athlete and the girl he once lost at seventeen. It's now ten years later and -- well, you know the drill.
Wow, so good. I usually like a strong, silent, brooding alpha male, but Colton was incredible. He never played games and wore his heart in his sleeve. From the minute he saw Skylar again, he was hooked and told her all the time his feelings for her.
Colton was so patient with Skylar. She had a troubled childhood and would literally run out on him when things got too heavy. I really thought they wouldn’t sleep together until the end of the book. That was the reason I took off a star. I do realize her trauma, but she had a sexy, thoughtful, caring, successful man who only wanted to be with her and she kept squashing it.
Because Colton was such a romantic and the sex scenes and dirty talk were so good, I feel like I highlighted 1/2 the book on my Kindle. Like the other book I read in this series, “Ayden,” it got a little hokey/cringy at times, too.
This has a lot of sex and language but it is a good story about two people and the difficulties they have to overcome to love a n d be happy.solar and Colton are good solid characters.
MY RATING SYSTEM 5 stars--WOW 4 stars--would read again 3 stars--was good, won't read again 2 stars--read it, but didn't enjoy it 1 star--didn't finish, it was so awful
Do I need to read books before this one: no Cliffhanger: no
SUMMARY Colton jogs on the beach, agrees to catch a football for a fan, a redhead collides with him.
Sky follows an artist onto the beach to convince him to give her an interview. Waves knock her over twice, then she runs into a wall of muscle. She wakes getting mouth-to-mouth. Jackass? Sparky?
They met 10 years ago at a camp site as teens, spent one wonderful night talking, almost gave each other their virginity. When they parted, she gave him a fake number.
Colton introduces Sky to the artist, she gets the interview. He takes Sky to his house, calls the team doctor to check her for injury. He's a tight end for the Cougars. She doesn't follow sports. Colton tells her about his search to find her, especially because his dad died 2 months after that trip. He asks why she gave him fake info. She tells him her mom had a restraining order on her father. She sees a picture of him with 5 guys. He names his 4 cousins and best friend; his cousin Dylan is his quarterback.
They kiss, she starts feeling out of control, grabs her purse. “Why are you running away from me again?” My mom’s relationship with a monster taught me a lot of things, including to take off if a man gets too close. She let my father fully into her life, and the decision nearly killed her. Only one man has ever made me want to stop running, though, and he’s right here.
He asks for her real number. She hands him her phone, and tells him the pass code is Bolder. “Just…some regrets I have.” I don’t say the whole truth—that I wish I’d been bolder in Boulder ten years ago and hadn’t run away from the only guy who’s ever made me feel anything real in this world.
She has a nightmare, calls him to distract her so she can relax. They talk every night for hours for 4 weeks because she needs space to sort her emotions.
EVALUATION I like how their pasts are slowly revealed, and that they help each other process associated emotions. I also like the overall theme of hope and healing. I honor Sky's integrity with her nightmares, and her awareness and bravery in seeking help. I love Colton's cousins and friends who recognize Sky's worth keeping instead of seeing her as too much trouble.
RECOMMENDATION This is for anyone who likes a good romance. It's especially apropos for survivors of abuse and their partners.
FAVORITE QUOTES She’s a salvation for me, a sweetness in a world tinged with sorrow and pain.
For anyone who’s a child of domestic abuse, caution can never be thrown away. It should be nurtured and cared for, because caution may be the only thing that keeps you alive.
Colton stands out anywhere, but he truly looks too big for this small space—his biceps alone take over the room.
I was worth more than my past. My childhood doesn’t define me. Not the way I thought it did.
Once you’ve had your physical safety threatened, you no longer feel certain of that natural, protective boundary around you. One that everyone deserves to have. But when that boundary is broken, a part of your soul shatters, and I don’t know if it’s possible to put the pieces back together.
“I guess a quick getaway feels like power to me.” “Sometimes. But in other cases, the harder thing to do is think you’re worthy of staying. Because there’s beauty in being able to open your heart to love, Sky.”
Shutting off your heart because of past pain doesn’t help you to heal. Opening up is what will heal you.
Forgiveness is something one can only do when the pain has receded enough to feel something else.
POSSIBLE TRIGGERS (SPOILERS) Sex: multiple scenes Language: 61 F words, 52 Lord's name in vain, 42 S words Violence: dream of strangulation, memories of intense domestic physical abuse, report of felonious assaults, report of drug use
This was one emotional story. If you have been physically assaulted by a parental unit or saw a parent abuse another parent or your sibling this may be a hard book to read. Anxiety attacks are real and for Skylar Rosewood they can be debilitating. But nothing is foolproof and just about anything can trigger an episode. However, she had worked hard with a therapist to get a coping mechanism in place to get through life. Especially, since she decided to become an on-air reporter for the art scene.
Today, she needs to get an interview with an artist who is hard to pin down. But she is bound and determined to get a date for a face-to-face interview. However, the interesting part is that she’s been stalking a Malibu Beach for three weeks hoping he will be surfing. If Skylar can snag the Maxwell White interview her career will finally take off. In five years she went from intern to on-air reporter. Not having one connection in the industry makes building a career in journalism extremely difficult.
He hates anyone with a microphone. Max supposedly donated all the proceeds from his last painting to an elephant rescue organization in Africa. She loves animals, and she adores elephants. And she wants an exclusive with the man who loves them, too. When Ted the cameraman sees him he’s carrying his board towards the waves. And now, he’s on the board on the water, yet she’s still running toward Max while yelling his name. Of course, she forgets she’s in her white pantsuit and it’s waterlogged and she can barely drag her legs through the waves.
Only to be brought back to shore by angry waves multiple times. She stands there with the water lapping at her two-inch strappy heels, then shifts to avoid seaweed, to storm toward her goal. BAM! She hits a brick wall of muscle. Why does this wall smell vaguely familiar… She loses her balance, and her bag flies off her shoulder as she falls backward and successfully lands on dry land. However, her momentum pulls her partly under the water, and before she can stand up, a wave crashes to shore and hits her smack in the face. Skylar cries out in pain, and the world goes black.
Colton gets a glimpse of a redhead pacing the shoreline up ahead. Her hair is covering the side of her face so he can’t see her profile, but something about her feels familiar. Curious to get a better look, he keeps moving closer to her. As he watches, his heart surprises him by beating hard in his chest. Colton’s heart only beat like that for one other woman, who was only a girl at the time. Look behind you before you come down with the ball so you’re not hit from behind. Someone slams into him as he lands, the football cradled gently in his arms like a baby.
Before Colton can grab her, a wave knocks her down. She starts to stand up, and a second wave absolutely decks her, dragging her further out to sea. He dropped the football in the sand, then rushed into the ocean to get her. She keeps staring into the stranger’s face, his mouth still mere inches from hers. Those lips look familiar. “Who are you?” Skylar asked. “And why were you kissing me?” “I was administering CPR. I wasn’t kissing you. But if that’s what you want…” His gaze meets mine, and he studies me curiously like he’s trying to figure something out.
His eyes are so blue and mischievous. “Sparky?” he says at the same time I call out, “Jackass?” He smirks. “I wouldn’t say Jackass, exactly. You were the enemy, after all.” “It was a touch football game—a game my brothers forced me to participate in because they were a man short—and you picked me up and threw me over your shoulder so you could move me out of the way.” That “vacation” is a time in my life that I never wanted to think about again. “And you tried to crush me with that run!” This was so emotional and frustrating at times with the back and forth but everyone deserves a Colton in their lives with family like his. They knew that Skylar was worth it and that's what they wanted for Dylan too.
Sky never thought she would see him again...She never thought she’d see him again…this is a second chance romance and first book in the Wild Men Series.

Turns out I shouldn’t have been so cocky…
I really enjoyed this book! This is a second chance romance book! The author did a great job in developing the characters and introducing the characters for other books in this series. I can't wait for the next book in this series! I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good book and a great HEA. The book is narrated by Jeremy York and Lacy Laurel. They did a great job of bring the book and it's characters to life!
I love second chance romances, and this one was just as sweet as it was sexy. Skylar's chance meeting with Colton on the beach after not seeing each other since they were just teenagers is a fluke neither of them could have counted on. She has been running from a past that could mean so many horrifying things while he has been searching for her since that night in Colorado when they were just teenagers, neither of them experienced and neither of them prepared.
While she fights her attraction to him because of the past that has taught her to be wary of men and what might really be happening under the surface, he fights to get through all of the pain she has endured to show her that he has never forgotten her, that the feelings he has held for her all of these years have not only stayed with him but multiplied at seeing her again. Will he be able to get through to her before fear makes her decide to leave the life she's made for herself and ghost him again?
It's been some time since I've read anything by this author, and reading this story has taught me why I love her work so much. There is an abundance of background romance and heartfelt moments that the heat she brings to her stories is just an extra bonus. There's a psychological issue that holds the characters apart, always a fear of something that could very well make them take another turn. She has a way of making her tales believable and make me want to climb into them and become a part of them. Her background characters are just as attractive and beg to have their stories told. I am so glad to have picked up another of her books and look forward to seeing what she comes up with next.
I absolutely love Melissa Belle and I have to say Colton didn't disappoint. The story is filled with emotion and in some cases pain but what comes from it is a beautiful love story that is so worth the time.
Colton Wild seems to have it all - a successful football career and great friends. Then the girl that got away walks back into his life and he realizes that the one thing missing has been for 10 years. The spent one night together and he never forgot her and now he has a second chance to make her his - that is if she will let him.
Skylar Rosewood is trying to live her life one day at a time. Her painful past haunts her every day but she is working through it and has been over the last 10 years. Then randomly she runs into Colton Wild again her life takes another turn. She never forgot that night all those years ago but she also knows she cant get to close, love doesn't mean the same thing to her as it does to normal people. Can she walk away again?
Ms Belle takes us on such an emotional ride, I ran through the all the emotions. I cried a lot, laughed and fell in love with Sky and Colt. Told in dual POV's we find out who these characters are and the pain they both go through for different reasons. The story is fastpaced, with great characters and wonderful dialog. I also loved the secondary characters and I know we get to see more of the Wild men and I for one can't wait.
This book is so worth the time - I promise you won't be disappointed.
I love second chance romances and this one is sweet and will tug at your heartstrings. Colton Wild and Skylar Rosewood have a history together. They met one summer when they were teenagers on Skylar’s last day of vacation while camping in Colorado. That amazing one night together of comforting and sharing feelings would affect these two into adulthood. Colton never forgot the sassy-mouth girl he met that summer.
A chance meeting on a Malibu beach, Colton runs into Skylar attempting to get the attention of a famous artist. She’s a TV journalist and as Colton happens to know the artist, he helps her get the interview. Colton Wild is in pro football with the Cougars, but Skylar avoids anything to do with sports. The attraction between Colton and Skylar is stronger than ever, but Skylar is wary and skittish. The way she feels about Colton overwhelm her. Colton knows Skylar is hiding behind a secret but doesn’t force the issue. He wants Skylar on her terms and however will make her feel comfortable. I just love the patience he shows Skylar. Your heart will break when you find out the truth about Skylar’s past. I love this story of reconnection and second chance. I received and voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Reporter Skylar Rosewood is on the beach chasing after an exclusive interview with a famous artist when she runs into Colt, the cocky and wild teenager she walked away from but never forgot. Famous football player Colton Wild jumps up to catch a football when Sky slams into him as he lands. Colt gives Sky CPR after she loses her balance, gets sucked under the water and blacks out. Sky had been scared of her feelings for Colt 10 years ago so when he begged to stay in touch she gave him the wrong phone number, wrong address, wrong everything. Colt is happy and feels at peace now that he's found Skylar, the one that got away. Colt had been devastated that Skylar had tricked him and he never got over her. Sky learned when she was 6 years old that the world just works better when you steel your heart and throw away the key. Will Colt be able to convince Sky to let him into her life and to trust him with her heart?
Melissa Belle delivers a sweet, fun and steamy story that will make you wish you had a swoon worthy Colton in your life too!
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book
Colton and Skylar meet when they are 17, but circumstances pull them apart and life goes on. Now they meet 10 years later and the chemistry is as strong as it was when they were teenagers. But is it strong enough to build on? Skylar has demons from her past that need to be addressed and does not think she can ever be in a serious relationship. Colton is a true gem. The man is not only a gorgeous, football player, but he is infinitely patient and is very understanding to the situation of Skylar. This second chance romance has all the feels and includes all the pent up sexual tension 10 years provides. While at times I became frustrated with Skylar, I was captivated by the tenderness and strength that Colton provided her with. It's a beautiful story, and with the inclusion of Colton's cousins, we are now looking forward to more Wild men!
Lacy Laurel and Jeremy York give a great performance to this book. Laurel continues to amaze me with the ability to get in the head of the characters and provide them with a voice that is perfect for them. York provides Colton with a warm, sensual personality with his smooth voice. Together they give us a satisfying listen!
I love sports romances and I really enjoyed this hurt/comfort story. It's about healing beyond your history and past and moving forward and taking new chances. Sky is a go getter but her can do attitude also serves as a front for a lot of pain and heartache from her childhood. She is understandably a very skittish about relationships and has a pretty strong fear of love but her undeniable attraction to Colton has her stepping out of her comfort zone for him. Colton was the ultimate counterpart to Sky’s flighty nerves. He is the perfect steady companion and i was in awe of his patience. He really won me over.
The whole book flowed really nicely and while in another story Sky’s hot and cold tendencies might have been frustrating the author did a really great job up setting them up so they made completely sense and were understandable for her as a character.
I also really liked how in setting up for more books in the series she expanded Wilde men beyond brothers like most series tend to stick with and included cousins and other family members. I can’t wait to see more of these guys!
The narration was great Jeremy York and Lacy Laurel gave a great performance!
It was coherent and actually took the time for the characters to fall in love. However, I hated Skye, the author has no idea what she's talking about. I have friends who have been through domestic violence from their fathers and no one has ever reacted like Skye. My dad was never physically abusive, but growing up with an unmedicated bi-polar/schizophrenic gave me miles of trust issues. I've never bolted out of a room as an adult. Most of the broken and damaged self-sabotage either we deliberately act in a way that is guaranteed to kill the relationship or we avoid trying someone new--sometimes both. I really like Colton so why he wanted to pursue a stunted child instead of a functional adult perplexed me. He must have seen something in her that I didn't see. When she said she was annoyed with her running I'm like dude thank you for joining me. The more tell than show, uninspired sex scenes, need for an editor were minor irritations next to the pill that was Skye.

Melissa Belle writes a beautiful love story of two people who had met 10 years earlier when but have not seen each other since. Great character development here, both leads have interesting past stories and issues to deal with, especially Skylar. All the making for intense & emotional storylines. Colton was patient and understanding which was a nice touch and added more sweetness to the story. Great start to a series, it was nice to meet the other Wild Men, looking forward to reading more about them! Thank you Melissa Belle for the great read.
I listened to the Audible edition. The narrators, Jeremy York & Lacy Laurel are awesome! They perform well together and bring the characters & the story to life from the pages to your ears. Both are gifted storytellers with natural talent. Thank you for the great listen!
Colton and Skyler had a connection that was amazing but Skyler was scared and ran away. Ten years later, fate seems to bring them together again. Skyler is still scared, but she also can't deny that she is drawn to Colton.
I really enjoyed this story. It was very amazing and adorable. I connected to Skyler on a very deep and personal level. I feel like more of these types of books should be out there. I feel like they encourage abuse victims to talk about their stories.
There were some not so realistic touches in this book that made me a bit leery of giving it the full five-star rating it deserves. Most of the things are just me being rather nit-picky.
Either way, it was a great read. It was very uplifting and inspirational. I am glad that I didn't let my judgment about the cover get the better of me. This book is a perfect example of why they say don't judge a book entirely by the cover. Fully recommend.
Colton & Sky met 10 years ago while they were in high school & on vacation with their families. Fast forward 10 years & they bump into each other again. Sky wants to run from Colton but he won't let her. What they felt 10 years ago had to mean something to both of them. Colton wants to give things a try but Sky has a wall up & won't let him in. She is afraid to deal with her past that not too many people know about. Colton gives her time & wants her to trust him. Sky knows that she needs to give Colton a chance but is afraid to. I loved how Colton was there for Sky no matter what. They both come to realize that they have had a lot to deal with in the past & it shapes them to who they are today. It was also fun seeing Colton's family & friends with him & towards Sky. This was a very emotional story that you could feel your heartstrings pull for both of them. I loved the narration for it also.
I liked this second chance romance. Colton was so patient and understanding with Sky, it was unbelievable. Totally swoon-worthy. Sky wasn't a favorite heroine of mine but she had a lot of issues she needed to overcome. There were moments when I was afraid she won't be able to conquer her demons but I needn't have to worry. As it turned out Sky was indeed capable of showing her true feelings and take a leap of faith with love. Entertaining read with quite a good character development. My only grief was that Colton could have been a plumber or an accountant instead of a professional football player it wouldn't have mattered. There was so little mention of football, it gave so minuscule aspect to the story that it didn't even qualified as a sport romance for me and felt a little exaggeration to call it so. At least compared to other sport/football romances I read.
Melissa Belle is one of my new favorite authors for a sexy feel-good romantic story. Sky and Colton are two charming characters who intrigued me from page one. Sky is a unique, feisty heroine who comes with a layered backstory, and Colton’s a hot strong hero I can swoon over and want as my new book boyfriend. In my opinion, the way they came together, along with their immediate connection as teenagers, was beautiful. The author does a great job of showing Sky and Colton grow closer and learn to trust in their love for one another as the story unfolds. From their first weekend alone to their road trip, the two characters navigate their new relationship as adults while they unravel past demons along the way. This is a great book if you’re looking for a steamy romantic read that contains a lot more than meets the eye.
This is the first book in the Wild Men Series. This is a sweet, sexy, and beautiful second chance romance story, filled with entertaining twists and turns. I love the story of Colton and Skylar. Colton is handsome and a good man, protective and really supportive. He's so perfect! Sky is a damaged, but a beautiful and strong woman. She's feisty and independent. They are great together and they share an undeniable and intense chemistry. I love their beautiful HEA. The secondary characters were also interesting. The narration was really great with Lacy Laurel and Jeremy York. Both have a beautiful voice. I'm looking forward to read more books written by this author and narrated by these narrators. I really enjoyed my listening. I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
Audio review This is by book 1 in the series and my first from the author . I love my sports romance, this audio had some dips and turns and it was suspenseful.
Colton is a football player that had a inta love with Skylar. They had a night together, it was everything Colton was expecting . Colton was expecting more but when Skylar leaves she gives Colton a wrong contact number . Colton tries to forget her but it’s hard . Skylar and Colton meet again 10 yrs later on a beach, in an unusual way , but a fun way . Skylar had issues with her family, mostly her dad when she was younger . She had no choice but to do what she did . Grab it and se does she mention it to Colton. Do they connect now
The narrating team of Lacy and Jeremy were fantastic. Love how both brought the story to life . They were smooth , clear and strong
This is a sweet, romantic and engrossing story. Colton is determined, amusing, charming and sweet. Sky is vulnerable, insecure and emotionally damaged, but she's also caring, resourceful and likable. They met as teenagers when Sky was at her most vulnerable, and Colton was hurting. They made an instant, intense connection, but Sky was too skittish to believe in it. Ten years later they remeet on a beach, and Colton vows to do whatever he needs to do to have her in his life. It's a slow process to gain her trust, but he's so sweet and caring as he goes about it. It's a very enjoyable and sweet story. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
OMG what an amazing start to a new series. I loved Colton and how great he is for Sky. Colton and Sly met as teenagers very briefly. When their paths cross again ten years later the connection is still there, even stronger than ever but Sky has a lot of scars from her childhood that make it hard for her to trust and love. Colton is just what she needs, if she can trust in it.
The author does a great job of slowly revealing Sky's past without repeating anything. We also get a really good glimpse at the other Wild boys. Cannot wait to read their stories.
Best book I've read in a while and I read a lot of books. I was hooked from the first page to the last.
