Hate to Love You

Fake dating the campus player never felt so good.Brody McKinnon is Whitmore University's star defenseman destined for NHL greatness. He made a name for himself playing juniors before gracing us with his esteemed presence. As much as it pains me to admit it, he’s exploded at the college level. While other girls fall all over themselves trying to gain his attention, I do my best to steer clear just as I would a particularly nasty case of crabs. For reasons I can't fathom, Brody takes great pleasure in messing with me. And I, in return, enjoy slicing him to ribbons with my razor-sharp tongue. You'd think after three years, he'd learn to keep his distance. No such luck.Unfortunately for me, I’m about to experience the worst week of my life. It starts with my ex announcing at a party that I’m a lousy lay. He’s the hockey-playing jerk I dated last year who left a bad taste in my mouth (*eyeroll* seriously…get your mind out of the gutter).Want to guess who rides in on his trusty white steed to rescue me? Or should I say, opens his big mouth? Yup, you guessed it. Brody freaking McKinnon, the guy I love to hate. He only makes matters worse by telling everyone that we’re together and then punching Reed in the face. The first…I plan on strangling him for.The second…I’m only sorry I didn’t get to Reed first. Now I’m stuck fake-dating Brody, the one guy who makes me feel like a rabid dog on a choke chain, for the foreseeable future. I guarantee we won’t last more than seventy-two hours without me killing him.

i just don't understand why must the H or other male characters always be degrading to other women who aren't the h or her bffs? why does this trope of the flimsy blonde who doesn't mind getting it on in a room full of guys still exist? as a (blonde) woman I take offense to this. and seriously - has anyone ever been at a house where people have sex while their friends sit close by? I'm not American so I don't know what goes on at your universities - but here in Europe we still value our privacy. and nobody wants to see that kind of PDA. so why is this such a common thing in NA? and do women really throw themselves at star athletes the way it's always portrayed? if yes, again, American universities must be super different from European ones because I don't think there are "famous" people on campus around here? at least not at the unis I went to or know people at. that's what most people love about uni - anonymity. so WTF USA, I don't understand it at all. and I've wondered about this so many times but I thought I'd just bring it up because the whole story builds on the fact that Nat's ex is an asshole who said some mean stuff about her and Brody, as the famous guy on campus, offers to be her bf to me ppl talk about that instead of her ex-bfs BS. and I'm just sitting here, in Germany, thinking: this story would never work here. because nobody at university gives a fxck about who people screw and nobody cares about people who don't belong to either their regular crowd or who they share zero classes with. but maybe with on campus housing and all that stuff it really is that different in the US. I don't know.

sorry, that went a bit off topic there but to conclude:
I just couldn't relate to the story at all. I thought their problems toward the end were non-existent and a classic case of miscommunication or rather lack of communication. I didn't connect to the characters, I didn't feel like I know them or why they at first fight all the time and later on fall for each other. I simply didn't care. I did care however about the way other women were described both from the H and the h as those stupid bimbos who throw themselves at men and have no self value. a) stop judging and b) why do you create such side characters? why do you need them for your story? what's their purpose other than to be an outlet for sexism and to support fxcked up views on women? I. don't. get. it.

This was like a poor man's version of The Deal

I can't believe how similar they are?! Pretty much everything is the same, but the writing isn't as good, and the characters not as deep. The characters in this (Natalie and Brody) don't have the same traumatic backstory as Hannah and Garrett, but the rest is The SAME! As I loved that book, I incredulously read on and finished this.

Yeah it was cute, and if I hadn't have read the better version last year, I may have given this more stars, but I did.... Elle Kennedy's version came out three years before this book so it's a bit suspicious 🤔

I'm a sucker for the hate/love and fake relationship trope. So this book was a double bonus with both tropes making an appearance. Natalie clashes with the university's star ice hockey player Brody. Every interaction since freshman year involved bickering and bantering. But when Natalie finds herself in an embarrassing situation, Brody, out of all people, comes to her rescue. They agree to fake date until the situation blows over but things change when they start to get to know each other a little bit more.

There was lots of drama with family issues with regards to fathers for both characters as well as navigating college politics. Natalie eventually grew on me. She was one tough nut to crack. Feisty and bullheaded, it took a while for her to loosen up and start trusting her feelings and opening herself up to the possibilities. Brody is a member of my Book Boyfriend Club. For a guy who was the consummate manwhore and had never been in a relationship before he was surprisingly good at it. He had a great sense of humor, was supportive, understanding and all kinds of awesome.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and am hoping the other characters get their own stories.

***AUDIOBOOK***

4 STARS

This was really cute and slightly steamy story. I thought the couple had great chemistry and banter, secretly being attracted to each other but also loathing each other (or pretending to). It also contained a lot of my favorite tropes - enemies to lovers, sports romance, and fake dating.

I really thought the narrators did a great job too!

This was cute and fun, but about halfway through I started getting strong "The Deal" vibes. Obviously, it's probably coincidence since the plot twists aren't exactly unique, but it threw me.

If you go into this book fully aware that it is a slightly immature, ‘enemies to lovers’ (and all that jazz) storyline, then I think that you will really enjoy it.

Hate to Love you’ is a classic Young Adult college romance and doesn’t pretend to be anything other than this.

Brody appears, at first, to be your stereotypical ‘jock’.
That’s what you call them in America, right?

He is destined to be a star hockey player and everyone on campus swoons over him.

Everyone except Natalie, that is.

Natalie, is a funny smart arse who is the only girl in college immune to Brody.

They have some really funny verbal sparring sessions and shamefully, I have to admit: I laughed out loud at some of them. Their exchanges at the start of this book were extremely good.

During a party they end up in a fake 'relationship' and the story is their journey from this point. Of course, there is far more to Brody that meets the eye and soon Natalie realises this for herself.

It is written very well, and there are some really funny moments in this one. I would say it’s sweet rather than full of angst, as I had hoped going into it. The name suggests the characters hate each other, but they don't. Nonetheless if you’re looking for a light enjoyable read then I recommend this one.

4.5 Fantastic Stars!
Review by Lisa Kane

Loved this book! Brody is the hot guy on campus, the one every girl has her eye on. Every one but Natalie. She's aware that he's gorgeous and destined for great things in the NHL, but she has no time for this player. Brody meanwhile, is well aware of Natalie but he won't let on that he's interested. He gets off on getting under her skin, she tries her best to avoid him.

When they are at the same party standing next to each other, trading insults, Natalie's ex comes over and insults her. Over and over. No way is Brody going to let him get away with it. It's rumble time! Natalie is mortified about the things her ex said-how will she show her face again? Brody comes up with a plan-she's with him now-no one would dare say a word.

Their fake relationship is on but how fake is it? Hate to Love You is a fun read, with some poignant moments. Brody is a great guy-being with Natalie is what he's wanted since they were freshman-almost 4 years later he's finally getting the girl. Or is he??

Overall feeling was "Meh..."
Not real love to hate relationship since aside from bantering a little bit they never really hated each other. Brody wanted in her pants from the beginning and so did Natalie, she was just too proud to admit it.
It dragged for too long and the author made so many unnecessary descriptions. too much telling and not enough showing. I felt really annoyed towards the end and could not wait to finish the book and have it done with.

This is a tough one. I honestly don't feel comfortable rating this book because it's essentially a fanfiction of The Deal by Elle Kennedy. I did read the whole thing and enjoy it, but the plots were nearly identical with a few relationships just slightly altered. Had this been a more original work it would have easily been at the very least a 3 star read for me, if not a 4.
If you haven't read The Deal (or this book) and don't want spoilers stop reading now.
In both books the girl is not a fan of the campus hockey star, in this book the hero saves the heroine from an uncomfortable encounter with an ex and they start a fake relationship which the hero immediately tacks on her tutoring him and sexual relations to give the heroine 'more experience'. In The Deal the heroine gets roped into tutoring the hero in exchange for a fake relationship so she can make the guy she wants jealous, she ends up coming to him for sexual help because she can't orgasm due to past sexual assault. Both hero's live with 4 hockey friends, the opening scene in this book was sooo similar to The Deal it's crazy. Cooper with the sex chair and exhibitionism in the living room? Dean all the way. Sounding similar? It is. This book was basically The Deal without the super traumatic parts namely the heroine's past sexual assault and the hero's abusive father. Speaking of father's in both books the dad's are ex-hockey pro's who end up convincing the heroine to dump the hero, and both remarried after their wives died while the hero was still a kid/teen. If there were one or two similarities, okay, but this plot was so parallel to The Deal it was ridiculous. That said I did enjoy the authors writing, the characters were lovable and I liked their story it just wasn't theirs unfortunately... Something I appreciated that this author brought to the table though was talking about learning disabilities and the effects of divorce on older children. My parents got a divorce when I was 19 and I felt like my feelings weren't valid, I was grown up, off at college it shouldn't have affected me that much, but it had really deep implications on my life and not dealing with it properly definitely contributed to my anxiety and depression making themselves known. Anyways, I'm disappointed because like I said I did enjoy the book, but I can't in good conscience give credit to this author, unfortunately.

Almost dnf-ed a bunch of times. Just meh. None of the characters stood out. I guess I liked that Brody was all about the heroine once they started fake dating. The evil OM story line was just dropped without him getting any pay back for all the drama he caused. Not satisfying. I guess I finished...

Perfectly acceptable hockey jock enemy to lover romance.
Very typical but better than your run of the mill for this trope, male characters arc is actually decent and believable and the storyline isn’t overly dramatic to the point of unrealistic.
Worth a read for sure if you need a pallet cleanser

DNF @ 22%.

This reads like a Disney Channel Movie. I am far too old for Disney Channel plots. I mean, they are fine if I find myself watching my nieces on a Saturday afternoon and I want to keep them busy... but I haven't actually liked a DCOM since High School Musical. Anyways I digress...this book has a weak plot line that is extremely juvenile, predictable and cliche. The characters are not any better. Natalie hates Brody because he is a Hockey Player. That's it. The guy has literally done nothing to her to warrant the childish hostility aimed at him. Not that Brody is all that spectacular of a character...I mean, in the first chapter alone, he goes from a studious guy who doesn't like girls throwing themselves all over him, to sleeping with two at the same time. He boasts that he got over the girls fawning all over him years back to literally basking in their attention. I feel like neither character is fleshed out enough to care about their childish bickering over nothing. This may have gotten better as the book progresses, but the writing is just too immature for my tastes and I kind of don't want to waste my time on a book to which I continually roll my eyes.

I really enjoyed this book. Everyone loved
Brody McKinnon, the guys wanted to be him and
the girls just wanted him. But no one knew the
real Brody. We meet Natalie, she is not impressed
with Brody and his hockey fame. She thinks he is
a man whore (which he is) and really just wants
to get through school and get on with her life.
Brody has other plans, he has liked Natalie for
years, and now that she is single he can make
his move. I know this book has been done before,
and probably a little better, but I really liked
the relationship Brody and Natalie had. This
book could have easily been a 5 star or more for
me, except I felt there were a few things missing.
I would have liked a better wrap up of Natalie and
her ex. I also would have liked for Brody's father
to come to the realization in the book that Natalie
was indeed meant for Brody. I also would have
liked, in the beginning, for there to be a little less
back story, and a little more Brody and Natalie.
That being said I LOVED the awesom epilogue and
really enjoyed this book.

Talk about being perfect for each other!

I always enjoy Ms. Susevic's storylines, although I would agree with those reviewers who complained about the predictability of said storylines. However, the journey is always lined with engaging details and a few unexpected gems of interest that stem from each character's unique personality. Brody ends up being surprisingly thoughtful, sweet, with deeper depths to him that complement Natalie's tendencies to overreact, over think, and make narrow-minded decisions while her emotions are on overload. Absolutely perfect for the gorgeous hockey jock who has those hidden depths and major feelings for her. Loved it in spite of its predictable HEA, spices up by the obstacles they suffereda getting there.

As much as I really did love reading this, it is almost identical to Elle Kennedy's 'The Deal' which is better. Like, identical to the point where the couple starts off in a fake relationship and the sports star's over bearing father convinces the girlfriend to breakup with him for his 'own sake'. BIG COPYCAT

Since the first page, I really did think I'd love it. And handsome guy with a great sense of humour, a smart girl with a sharp tongue that love to spar. Every time they meet each other it's like a big collision between a tornado and and a cyclone. They make sparks fly everywhere, but u know what they say about the opposites...
The plot is funny but it has a bit of drama too that I think is always something good to keep the attention of the readers.
I think these one are the books that deserve a sequel. I mean , u start to know Luke, Cooper and Sawyer and yes, it would be nice to know more about them. To know how the relationship between Luke and Zara came about, given that at the beginning they need to hide it from Nicole. I would like to see Cooper and Sawyer fall so bad for someone and totally change their way to be. I dunno, sometimes I think a story can be the start for a lot of other stories, probably this is due to the fact that I started to getting attached to the secondary characters ^^. Anyway, Jennifer if u are reading, mine is just a suggestion. ;p
This world needs more Brody!

Sweet and sexy

Loved it.
Brody is the alpha, hot athlete but at the same time super sweet.
Natalie is the smart, sexy girl who has absolutely no time for any BS from Brody.
I loved their banter and dynamic personalities, they are so different and yet are at their best together.
Highly recommend.

Loved this story.

This story was very well written. Sometimes I get a book and I can't get into it at all. Unfortunately, I started reading it at night and ended up staying up reading it. Now I have to go to work with about 4 hours of sleep. It was similar to The Deal by Elle Kennedy but it was still worth reading. I'm going to have to read more books by Jennifer Sucevic.

It was an okay-ish series.
Natalie was a cool girl and Brody was also alright. That being said it was All Predictable Stuff (APS™).
I initially liked their chemistry but towards the end I guess I became used to of it so it didn't interest me that much by that time.

I freaking love a hockey romance. I just can't get enough of them. So when I found this Chirp audiobook deal it was just a given. I had to have it.

Natalie can't stand hockey players in general after her ex screwed her over. So whenever she sees Brody, college hockey player and future pro NHL player, his giving her crap drives her nuts. The two pick at each other constantly. Natalie tries to avoid him, but Brody loves being around her. Her giving him grief gets him like nothing else. When women come easily, a challenge and someone who isn't falling all over him is just what Brody wants. When an opportunity arises for him to pretend to be her boyfriend, he seizes it. The two strike an unlikely truce and wouldn't you know... Start to develop feelings.

Read if you like:
✅ Hockey romance
✅ Enemies to lovers
✅ Strong female MC
✅ 🌶️🌶️

The third act breakup was a little annoying. Just so predictable but overall this book was fiery!

4 / 5 ⭐️!
I don’t have much to say honestly, it’s by no means a revolutionary story but it was a fun read.
I happened to pick up this book just when I needed a quick read and this booktok recommendation was just what I wanted, plus it wasn’t awful like the last two recommendations I got from tiktok so that alone I think is what made the difference.
