I love this cookbook. From the recipe I chose to make, to the one of the skillet Shepherd's Pie on the cover of the book, there is so many recipes I am going to try. I have dog-earred 19 different pages. And those are just the ones I want to try right away! I decided to go with a muffin recipe. I've been eating them at breakfast time lately, and loved the combination in the recipe, so it was a good fit. I made Raspberry Walnut Muffins. Man, they were scrumptious, and so easy to make too! There were a perfect flavor match for my moring routine! I felt like they didn't last long enough though so maybe next time I need to double the batch. I can't wait to make more from the book though. The hubby is asking for the Shepherd's Pie since the book arrived, and I do have a beautiful new cast iron skillet that needs to be used....
As the title indicates this is definitely a comfortable cooking cookbook - full of quick and easy food, all tasty and requiring little fuss.
Years ago I stumbled across this book in a sell-off and I am so glad I picked it up. I love this cookbook and have purchased or been given practically all of Rose Murray's other cookbooks since that time and still use them reguarly.
In this book I started with a yummy "Make Ahead Fully Loaded French Toast" for a weekend visit with my sister and her family. It was delicious. My sister browsed through the book while there and found a number of recipes including an "Almost Cabbage-Rolls Casserole" recipe she wanted to try. I was fortunate when I returned to the sell-off store on Monday that I was able to buy her her very own copy of the book. Since that time, she has often bought me a new Rose Murray cookbook at Christmas.
I also found the "official" recipe for a "Do Ahead Mashed Potato Casserole with Parsley Crumb Topping". My mother-in-law had been making it for years for Christmas and had passed it along to me not knowing that she or whomever passed it along, must have clipped in out of the paper or seen it on television sometime. I am not surprised as Rose Murray is one of Canada's best known and favourite chefs and cookbook authors and a regular food writer and contributor for many Canadian magazines and a frequent guest on television shows.
I now make make the "Make-Ahead Baked Rutabaga Carrot Puree" regularly. It's delicious with and without the extra whipping cream or sour cream and nuts.
The recipes are simple and easy to follow. They are particularly great for quick, weeknight meals when you haven't thought much about it in advance or when you are suddenly having unexpected guests. The flavours are that good - quick to prepare but good enough to serve company.
There are quite often 2 recipes to a page. That's how simple everything is. Rose Murray writes well, gives lots of background on the recipes and suggestions for accompaniments. For those who like pictures in cookbooks, be forewarned, there is not one picture in this cookbook. However, I think the number of recipes, the ease, simplicity and taste more than make up for the lack of pictures. A great cookbook for ideas, great solutions and good eating.
