Wasn’t a massive fan of this one... it hit interesting points but not in the right way?
First, the plot. The division of Yoshino and Rei is actually a really interesting plot, and one I liked quite a bit - but I feel like it came too soon. I didn’t really know the characters enough to be too invested, and the seeming destruction of the school’s traditions would’ve been more alarming if I had had more books to get used to them and cherish them. There’s 37 books! It can go slower!
Second, the framing of their relationship... I grasp that the whole “sister” relationship in the school is sometimes meant as a pseudo-romantic one and sometimes it’s played out very nicely. Yumi and Sachiko are very well done. But it’s not always such so far, with Sachiko and her onee-sama not having that sort of relationship, nor Rei with hers, nor Shimako and Rosa Gigantea. So there’s no need to frame Rei and Yoshino, who are COUSINS!!!, in that quasi-romantic way...
The translation was a little wonky in parts, but it was a fan translation, so what can you do.
Overall, the plot timing dropped it a star, and the relationship framing dropped it a star, and almost dropped it two, but the plot was a genuinely well-done one even if early, so I’ll leave it at 3. It was okay.
The yellow roses just aren't that interesting as characters, and the book was all over the place. If it wanted to make them the focus characters, I'd rather it actually focused on their povs. The narrative felt too scattered. Especially since the book still largely focuses on Yumi. Who is almost a complete outsider. You only get a few sections of the actual focus characters POV. And, I just wasn't convinced by the actions and decisions of said focus characters. It felt too unnatural.
The climax of this book is a kendo match ,and it was such a pain to read in japanese, a lot of it went over my head and I couldn't be bothered to double check, I suspect I'd have skimmed these parts even in english.
I did enjoy the Sachiko and Yumi interactions, and some of the other sections like the school newspaper and it's impact.
