Love this 'book tour' of all the states in America! If I ever win the lottery I think that I would buy an RV and just hit the road. Missouri (M) would defiantly be one of the states I would like to spend a little time in. Seems like there are lots of interesting caves you could visit if you went to M. A friend told me he had the best BBQ he ever had in M!

These states books from Scholastic are a wonderful introduction to not only young learners but adult ones as well. Zeiger's My United States: Missouri is full of trivia, such as having the first kindergarten opened in the U.S. in 1873, and that it also hosted the first Olympic Games held in the U.S. in 1904, which lasted 146 days instead of today's standard of two weeks. I also learned that Missouri produced a number of successful writers including Mark Twain, Joseph Pulitzer (for whom the award is named) Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes and that Harry S. Truman is the only president from its state. Also included in the line-up of famous people are Edwin Hubble, for whom the telescope is named, and General Omar Bradley. The one place where I felt this little book of knowledge was missing was in that it should have given the reason for its nickname, "The Show Me" state.

This non-fiction picture book is a perfect, simple read for an elementary or early middle school student. There are many pictures and basic facts about Missouri that attract the eye and it is in language that is easy for children to understand. My favorite part was learning that the author Mark Twain was actually born in Missouri! I would use this book in my future classroom to teach the class about Missouri and show them different resources to learn more about non-fiction-related topics, such as states.

Alot is packed into 48 pages. I guess gone are the days where 100+ page state books are viable for publishers. This was a more recently published substitute for our public library. 2019 copyright date vs. 2001 (what was on shelves
