Marc Stevens is the pen name of a retired building contractor in central Missouri. Marc is a married father of two and an avid outdoorsman. His love of science fiction inspired him to start writing.
First and foremost in my opinion is the profanity in the book. The use of swearing and cursing in books always takes away from the story. The same feelings that cause the character to curse can be be more accurately expressed without swearing. It's harder I'm sure but will make the book better in the end.
The next issue that needs the to be addressed is the lack of time expression. It is very hard to track the passage of time in the story. The characters are running here and there around the galaxy which doesn't seem take that long but then you find out that a week seems to have passed while the main characters were in a meeting with 5 minutes of talking.
This happen over and over again and it really takes away from the enjoyment of the book. The story is still fun but not as fun as it could have been. All that needs to be done is to have the story acknowledge the passage of time by saying thinks like " several days later, after 10 hours of much needed rest etc..." Another thing to do is to use dates at the beginning of the chapter and use page breaks with dates and times. Then use a bit of flashbacks if needed catch the reader up.
It should be noted that the author started to have the books characters note the passage of time in the story and it consequences right at the end of the book. Hopefully I will see it much more I'm the books to come
I had hoped that this would not be a one good book and then the others would not live up to the first book. It is the same great writing and the same I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. Now waiting for book number 3.
This book is a marked improvement over the first book in the series. The author has talent, writes an engaging story with interesting characters that I care about. Stevens’ writes smooth dialogue between the characters and skillfully tells an action story learning from the mistakes of the first book.
The action is nearly continuous, which makes the book a fast read. Stevens writes excellent action scenes, and has good buildup and leads into the action. The bits in between the action are brief and I hope the author considers giving the characters (and readers) a bit longer break between action scenes.
Nearly continuous action can get tedious, and Stevens writes close to the edge off too much action and not enough rest. In the first half of the book the author has the characters pulling practical jokes on each other, and even a few jokes with new characters.
Close friends will pull practical jokes such as in the story, especially in a military-like situation. There is always someone who falls asleep in a briefing (death by Power Point), and his platoon mates will pull pranks on him.
There are a few errors in the text, but not nearly as many as in the first edition of the first book. Little irritated that Amazon does not realize it is an update of the previous version. Other authors when they released an updated and corrected version of the book, Amazon automatically updated the file in my Kindle. I am not sure if this is an author or Amazon error.
I wish that I could have done some developmental editing with this author, and am sorry that I did not get to edit this text. There are several editing mistakes that I wish I could have pointed out to the author before the book went live on Kindle.
It is irritating to discuss an error at length with an author only to see them repeat that error several more times in the next book. The author’s target audience includes a lot of people (such as me) that are very weapon savvy. Making frequent weapon errors in the book, especially after I discussed the errors with the author, annoys me, but not enough to quit reading the book.
Nathan getting cock blocked so many times was annoying. The first two times Nathan got cock blocked by the Operative was ok but by the third time it was pissing me off. In a developmental edit, I would have recommended the author change the manner in which Nathan does not manage to have sex with Tria.
For a while I wondered if Stevens was going to turn the First of My Kind series into a harem story. Male-dominated harem is a hot subgenre right now. A hot Terran woman and two, four-armed women would make an interesting harem.
Overall an excellent book with a few minor errors and weapon mistakes only somebody such as I would nitpick. Surprisingly clean, despite the action and violence, language is rather tame with no swearing. With the lack of sex, and no foul language, book is PG-13, rather than the hard R or even X rating that I expected.
You can't go more than two of three pages without some reading the word "scat"/"excrement"/"piss"/or some synonym. Literally anything negative is described in such terms nearly exclusively. It goes far beyond "let's not use the f-word so this can go into the young adult section of the library" and into the realm of, "you really don't want to look at the author's browser history" because they obviously have some fixation with poop
Normally, I don't mind too much when authors come up with a euphemistic lexicon. For example: dialog in Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series contains "storming"/"storm off"/etc instead of "damned"/"fuck off"/etc. I find that this is actually really great worldbuilding and I suppose, _in theory_ ,makes a book more approachable for younger readers. Other times it's taken too far and it becomes rather trite such as the excessive use of "frig"/"friggen" instead of the "fuck"/"fucking" in M.R. Forbes' Chaos of the Covenant series. At that point, it's so close to the actual word that its use is rather puerile. The author come off sounding like a 7th grader trying not to get scolded by their mom for swearing. But even then, it's a relatively minor annoyance.
This book however has so many allusions to shit that it's what the reading experience became.
This book has the same charm as the first with the jokes throughout and a compelling and interesting story this book is near the top of my top 10 list. The only problem I have with this book is the ending, I understand that as an author you want people to look forward to the next book but two cliff hangers in a row is kinda annoying and I understand that writing a book of this high quality and this high caliber means that it takes time but the wait from the first book to the second book was bad enough but another cliff hanger kinda makes me a bit crazy. Also I do think that at some point they are going to have to take that vacation, I know that their all crazy BA’s but still... you can’t go nonstop forever. I love this book and can’t wait for the next. And don’t rush Mr Author Man if quality writing such as this takes time I can wait
This was an excellent book no it was great! I enjoyed all the action, the adventure, the weapons and the characters. I suggest that anybody who likes space opera humor and fast-paced action read this book. I am eagerly awaiting the next one. The only thing I do not like is a character who loses control because honestly nobody would follow a commander who could possibly get them killed. But read this book anyway and if you haven’t read the first do so as well.
It isn’t a deep philosophic read, but it is fun. The minor tidbits of exaggerated skullduggery make it even more enjoyable. Look forward to more in series, or from this author. There was a comment from another review about how they were insulted by the repeated comments in the first book to dumb things down, to which I sort of laugh. Anyhow, recommend the series as entertaining with some interesting races that have never before (by me) heard of attributes (angry stench).
Really good job done editing - only noticed a half dozen errors. Believe it or not, no sex. AND disguised swearing (pg-13). Lots of death and destruction to the baddies, but not especially graphic. (I've read much worse). Lots of action. Considering there are over 550 pages it keeps moving along quite well. * Looking forward to part 3 ! *
Fast-paced “AE Van Vogt”-like action sci-fi, which unlike other series in the genre doesn’t get repetitive. I read 50-60 sci-fi books a year, so I’m hard to impress, but this series is a very entertaining read. I would have given it more if the overall story-arc and world-building didn’t take such a back-seat to the action, but that’s just a personal preference. For the genre it is very very good.
This sequel was just as good as the first. Maybe even better than the first. There was more action, more humour, more of everything. And it was done in such a way that wasn't boring or repetitive in the least. I couldn't put this book away. I would have read straight through if it was shorter haha. That said, I finished it in 2 sessions lol. Granted that amounted to about 20 hours or so. Ready for the next book!!!!!!
A very good shoot em up space opera which shows a lot of promise for the series. The only negative is the sense of time: as the story unfolds it seems as though the characters never sleep and things happen instantaneously. I think the author will get this figured out with a bit more experience.
The story picks up right after the first and continues with breakneck speed. Some character development with Nathan and Tria, although I feel that Coonts and Klutch are out in a backburner to accommodate new characters. All in all great story that ends with a cliffhanger.
This is a great series, I really enjoy the premis of earthling finds advanced space ship and goes out to explore. I like the characters and the different personalities. Great job. Editing on this book was much better than the first. Still lots of punctuation issues but much better. Looking forward to seeing what happens with the prule!
I like the entire concept of this universe. Aliens, high tech and awesome battle armor with insane man pack weapons of impossible destructive capability. Okay sports fans, buckle up for some Prule Alien A$$ kicking fun. Thanks for the GoodRead. When does the next book come out?
Wow, a sequel that is better than the previous book! The only major annoyance with the story was the snarky banter with the new 4 armed chick that got old real fast. If you love fast paced space opera full of action, battles, aliens and an AI learning human emotions then this is the series for you. Recommended with the advice to read book one first.
Judging from what I read and the reviews, book 1 was an improved version. That is most obvious now, since book 2 has not had the same review. On the plus side, there is a lot of action. Unfortunately, some of it is brutal and barbaric. This book resolves a few story threads but ends with a typical cliff hanger.
Just flat fun to read. The characters have grown to feel like family. This is a series to keep in your personal library. Just pull it out and start reading, guaranteed to fill the time with adventures. Thank you,😺
An excellent read and good adventure series. The characters are enjoyable and the action is interspersed with just the right amount of social interaction. I look forward to the next installment.
This is an outstanding series that I honestly hope doesn’t end for some time. The first book was fantastic but this second book I actually liked even more. Absolutely addictive and hands down my best read in quite a while. Brilliant.
Well developed characters and plot. But plenty of marine type action. Snarkey 👽 aliens. Clueless bad guys. Mix in an A.I. that's testing its human side in pranks......can't wait ( but I know I have to ) for the next book in this great series.
Took me longer than usual to finish this one due to the fact that lead character Nathan Myers spends more time trading insults with another character than anything else. After about the 12th time of him calling her a witch and her calling him a primitive I just started skimming!
I rarely leave any reviews. I don’t feel myself capable of judging someone’s work for all to see. I just know if I like a book or not. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series. To me, that says enough.
Didn’t know what to expect at first but soon found out how great of a book this is. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I will definitely recommend this book to my friends.
I enjoyed the first book and the second didn't disappoint if your into good vs evil aliens, threats to the universe great sci-fi this is the series. Good development of the plot and a lot of room still left in this series can't wait till book three.
Sci Fi has a new top author and that's a fact! Well written, smart and great character development. But it's the earth man brings Justice to the galaxy story that truly shines. Few things in life are guaranteed but you loving this book is an ironclad lock!
I have read the first and second books for the third time. It is a good story line. They are a bit long, but have a lot of action. I've read these books again hoping for the next one in the series. Please tell me it is in the works soon.
Mistakes: Everything was fine up to the 70% mark, I found five errors in the last 30% of the book. Plot: More battles, artifacts, and hidden bases. I'm disappointed that the MC has not recruited any other fighters. Characters: The Opritave is annoying. 8.3/10
Not as good as the 1st book. This book was loaded with filler and could have been written in half the pages used. Was it good? Most was interesting, some was good, and some boring. Hopefully, all of this will help the next book move along.
This series is right up there with some of my favorite science fiction stories with regard to suspense, laughs, fun, rip-roaring action and most importantly for me the leg of the books.
This series is something new and relaxing to read. I like it about earth man being abducted and copping with new alien species. This very refreshing from the other books I have read. Please keep up the good work with the series.🖖🤘
