Charming Jane

Rate this book
Jane was a girl in trouble…..not that kind of trouble, sheesh. More like the broke, homeless kind. She finds herself stranded in a city well known for its decadence, and with nowhere to go, she’s a tad on the desperate side.

Enter playboy Ian, uptight Michael, and reluctant bodyguard Buster.

They’ve made the city of New Orleans their home, and while not in the habit of rescuing damsels in distress, they make a unanimous exception for Jane.

It’s not long before Jane develops feelings for her rescuers, but with one of them broken by a past betrayal, can she make a relationship with all three of them work?

"A slow burn that turned white hot!"
"A Cinderella story with THREE princes.....my favorite kind."
"Whew, (fan myself) no contest. I pick all three!"
"The banter was awesome, the sexual tension sizzled, and I'm so glad I didn't have to choose!"

A full length, standalone reverse harem novel. Mild language and sexual content may be inappropriate for younger readers.

Charming Jane is a sweet, slow burn RH with three awesome heroes and one boring, naive heroine.

Jane is homeless and stranded in New Orleans for the summer, thanks to idiotic, naive parents who shipped her off to old friends who aren't where they're supposed to be. She's just escaped the attentions of some unsavory looking types by running into a restaurant, where the waitress and two brothers proceed to dole out some much needed kindness. But when she leaves the restaurant and is accosted by the thugs again, the two British hotties from the restaurant rescue her and bring her to their penthouse hotel suite to recuperate. What's a girl to do when presented with an offer she has no choice but to accept? Work for Michael for the summer as Ian's babysitter, so she can earn her keep until school starts. She never expected to fall not only for Ian, the sweet, charming blond brother, but also Buster, the laid back, but built like a mountain bodyguard, AND gorgeous in a suit, uptight Michael.

I have to say that Charming Jane is not what I expected out of a RH. For one, it's a slow burn, which normally I love, but here, the slow burn is taken way too far. There aren't any scenes until nearly the very end, and they're not all together, so no quad here unfortunately. I did fall in love with each of the three guys, though. They're all completely different from each other, and are well-fleshed out, interesting characters on their own. Too bad their heroine isn't nearly as interesting as they are. Jane is a completely naive, bland character due to her conservative upbringing. She brought the entire story down a star for me. If she had been more interesting and on par with her men, and had there been a lot more heat instead of just sexual tension, I could have definitely given Charming Jane 4 stars. As it's written, though, I felt a little cheated by the blurb - it most definitely did not live up to my expectations.

I love Kristin Coley. I was introduced to her through her amazing story The Pack. I am now reading her Hidden Series. Which are not RH, and are so damn good. So when I heard that she was releasing her first RH I was so excited. And guys I loved it!!!! We have our main character Jane who after arriving to New Orleans has not had a easy time of it. Her first day there she gets into trouble, enter brothers Ian and Michael. They come to the rescue, and I am pretty sure I fell in love with them from the start. When the brothers take her to their penthouse, they offer her a deal. One that she has no other option but to take. There she is introduced to their bodyguard and friend Buster. The flow of the story is perfect, as we get to know each of the guys and Jane more. Jane is a sweet girl from a religious family, who doesn't like to swear, is thoughtful, loyal, and is just what each of the guys need. Ian, who may or may not be my favorite, is the outgoing, charming, sexy and just plain hard to say no to fun loving guy. Michael, the suit, is intense, handsome, fierce, protective and demanding. Buster, the bodyguard that is understanding, protective, laidback and strong, will do whatever is necessary to protect his family. They have many obstacles to overcome to achieve their happily ever after. Can Jane be attracted to and want all three? Will one of the brothers be able to overcome a deep hurt that has left him scarred, and be able to love again? What would her parents say?

I read Charming Jane in one setting, I just was that invested in this sweet story. Here is one of my favorite quotes from the book, one of many, that I think gives you a good idea how awesome this book is:

"Sometimes, love showed up when it was least expected. We could blame timing or a million other things for why it didn't work out, but in the end it was a choice. And as I stared into his grey eyes and watched the color darken with emotion, I knew I'd always choose them."

I didn't have high expectations, but I was hoping for a charming, light, enjoyable read.

Unfortunately, this was a little too light and too cliche. It felt too much like fairy tale retelling meets wish fulfillment. The characters were cardboard cutouts. The premise was extremely flimsy. And the thought that the MC would end up in this situation and then in an RH was very far fetched.

The premise?

Jane is a missionary preacher's daughter who was mostly home schooled while being carted from foreign mission to foreign mission with her parents. She is 18 and ready to start at her small all-women's college in Georgia in the fall. Her parents take a year long mission assignment to Africa and refuse to bring her with them for the summer. Instead they arrange with acquaintances they haven't seen in years who live in New Orleans to take her for the summer. They send all her living expense and allowance money directly to the friends she will stay with. When she flies to NO, her luggage is, of course, lost. No one meets her at the airport, and the address for them is an abandoned lot. When she leaves the lot, she is followed and attacked.

She is rescued by wealthy brothers. Older brother, Michael, is a businessman who watches out for his wild child younger brother, Ian. Who is of course emotionally damaged by something in his past and now acts out, carousing, fighting, drinking, and using women. They bring her back to the hotel they are living in while working on a corporate takeover in New Orleans. Where Michael sees how Ian connects with Jane, and thinks maybe she can save his brother. So Michael hires her as Ian's babysitter and offers her room and board in the hotel. The third member of their trio is their longtime friend and bodyguard, Buster.

I won't spoil the rest, but it pretty much unfolds exactly as you imagine it will. No surprises here, and nothing much realistic. I found the goody two shoes Mary Sue MC to be off putting. Her three rules for agreeing to their babysitting proposal?

1) No drinking
2) No cursing
3) No women around in their underwear

GAH! Really? What the hell is the fun in any of that?

Meh... I ended up skimming through more than half of it just to see the ending.

I'm not sure if I missed something but I don't recall any contraceptives being used so the sex seemed kind of irresponsible. The first guy she slept with should have been more conscientious about doing that since she was a virgin. It especially seemed weird that it would be overlooked considering the unplanned pregnancy history that one of the guys had such an issue with.

3.5 because I enjoyed it, but I'm also torn because of how some things were handled
My first reverse harem novel! I kinda knew what to expect... but my jaw dropped anyway, lmao.
It started innocently enough, lulling me into a false sense of security... naive, sheltered girl (almost 19) is broke and alone in a big city, your usual damsel in distress from many shoujo and asian dramas (but she's American), she's saved by two hot and chivalrous British brothers who are obviously very very rich and even have a bodyguard. Tropes everywhere! This girl, Jane, is attracted by the three different guys: enter the love square.
- Michael (eldest brother, 26) is a businessman who wears suits 24/7 and is generally uptight. He also has no idea how regular people live. In dramaland, he'd totally get the girl. Oh, he's a smoker too, in case you need a more detailed mental image.
- Ian (younger brother, 22) is a wild playboy who didn't finish university, choosing a life of heavy drinking and partying. Obviously, he does it because he has a sad backstory. He's the first to openly crush on Jane, the one who looks and acts like a boyfriend the most... but the last to get to the next physical step (I still don't get it, plus it didn't seem right–more on that below).
- "Buster" (born James, bodyguard and honorary brother, age unspecified) is Scottish, nuff said. And teaches Jane self-defense. I honestly didn't like him as much as the other two and don't get why Jane is attracted to him (he's built, he's nice... but what else?).
While in a regular shoujo/drama the thing would be kept platonic except for one of the guys, here the reality is different. It goes like this...

Charming Jane is a cute and sweet read that kept me invested from start to finish.

Jane is an eighteen year old girl whose religious parents are leaving on a mission trip. Not allowing her to stay on her own, they rent out their house for the year they'll be gone and send Jane to friends they haven't seen in years to stay with for the summer before she starts college. But unfortunately for Jane, everything goes downhill once she arrives in New Orleans. All of her luggage is lost at the airport, the people she was supposed to stay with are scammers, giving her a fake address, and she is being followed by two creepy guys. After ducking into a diner to hide out she meets two brothers. Their conversation is brief and they go their separate ways, but when Jane is attacked leaving the diner, the Michael and Ian are there to help. After being rescued and explaining her situation to the guys, they decide to let her stay with them while she figures everything out.

While at first glance this may seem like a stereotypical "rich guys take in poor girl with no other options" kinda story and they immediately fall in love and what not, this story is any but. Jane agrees to stay with Michael and Ian, but under a few conditions. She is a somewhat conservative girl who is anything but greedy. Jane refuses to have them spoil her with expensive clothes and gifts, instead introducing them to goodwill and Walmart (quite the culture shock for these wealthy British men). She also meets their friend Buster who is staying and working with them. These three men are brothers, not all by blood, but by choice. They do everything together, and as strange as it is for Jane, she begins to develop feelings for all three of them.

The guys are all very unique in their own ways. Ian projects the playboy persona perfectly, but it's clear he's wrestling his own demons. But with Jane he is sweet and caring and protective. Michael is the more rigid older brother, focused on work and keeping his brother under control. He looks out for Jane, and she helps him loosen up a little. Buster is the tough guy, very tall and muscular, who teaches the guys and Jane selfdefense. He doesn't seem to have the uppercrust upbringing that the brothers have, but after everything they've been through together he is considered another brother anyway. Jane's relationships with the guys are all a little different. They all give her something she needs, and she completes a part of them, she completes their group.

This story was definitely sweet and more of a slow burn romance. Jane and the guys' feelings develop over the course of the story and there's not a ton of crazy steamy scenes but there were a few. Jane and the guys also have more problems than just her being stranded for the summer. The guys have a few issues of their own, but Jane is there for them every step of the way. While she definitely needed saving in the beginning of the story, in the end, Jane ends up saving them.

I really enjoyed reading this book and will definitely be looking out for this author in the future!

I enjoyed this book but there were things I didn’t like.

First it focused mainly on Ian. We barely learn anything about Buster, he’s hardly in it and is just in the background. Michael is in it a bit more then Buster but still he’s not a huge part of it, it all revolves around Ian and his sad history.

She didn’t even have sex with all three of them. Buster only gave her oral and he got nothing.

She has sex and loses her virginity to Michael?!? The book has mainly focused on Ian and her relationship with him yet she loses her virginity to Michael. And he didn’t even want to kiss her cause of his brothers brothers feelings then takes her virginity after doing things in a balcony for all to see. Where did her super conservative nature go?!?

Ian is the last to get anywhere sexually with her and it’s not even a sweet moment. He takes her super rough and does it doggy style on a desk to get over bad emotions. Oook...

Her personality is kind of all over the place. She’s a super conservative religious girl who stops going to church and lets a guy finger her on a balcony for all to see and a guy give her oral in a limo but she won’t let them drink one drink, curse, use innuendos and still dresses super conservatively even though *gasp* she wears pants & Bermuda shorts. It kind of confused me.

Also... Birth Control?!? She’s a religious virgin who goes bareback. Birth control and babies aren’t mentioned. After what Ian went through, you’d think there would have been a short convo about it at least. Even just one of them saying something after the fact about making an oops. But nope not a word.

I loved the guys especially Ian but wish there had been more development for all of them especially Michael and Buster.

I enjoyed the slow burn of the book but the sexual stuff still seemed to be abrupt, even with it being at the very end. And it was very fast paced. It felt like the author got towards the end and was bored or ran out of steam so she just threw the sex stuff in there and ended it.

The ending SUCKED!!!

She does naughty stuff with two of the guys, randomly gets held up at gun point, has sex with the last guy and then the epilogue is 10 months later and they are picking up her parents from the airport who know nothing. THE END. No babies, they don’t tell her parents anything, they don’t live happily ever after, nothing. Ugh. The ending and epilogue were just a HUGE disappointment!!!! When I saw 10 months later I was expecting a proposal, wedding, babies or something. Not them picking up her parents and not saying a word about their relationship. Ugh!

I enjoyed the story in this book and found the characters captivating, if not a little predictable. Jane is pathetically naive, Ian the roguish playboy, Buster the protector and Michael the quintessential Brit stereotype of a straight-laced, well-dressed businessman. Jane is one incredibly lucky young woman, I must say. Despite the fact that she has been scammed of all means of shelter and support, mugged in an alley and the ghastly fact that her luggage was lost on her flight, Jane is rescued by nature's gift to women in the bodies of Michael, Ian and Buster. It's a shame that she is forced to live in a luxurious penthouse, have her wardrobe replaced by the brothers Wright and protected by all 3 men that live with her. If only.

Seriously, the story here is so much fun to read, and there was nary an explicit sex scene until the very last part of the book! (Skip to there if you really just want to read the naughty parts.) I hardly missed it, though. There was enough sexual tension and innuendo to keep me interested and enough mystery to make me simultaneously love and hate Ian. Dear reader, note the scene where he is doing shots off a woman's belly. Grrrr. All of the characters have so much, er...character to them. They have histories that have made them what they are today and they are all searching for answers in their life. This struggle is different for each of them, but it also brings them together. The only thing I wish is that I would have learned more about Buster. He came across as a human-sized Stay-Puff marshmallow man with a black belt.

I definitely recommend this book and this author and I hope you'll enjoy the book as much as I. It's a very fun read.

So freaking awesome!! I absolutely LOVED this book. It had me hooked from start to finish, and I sooooo did;t want it to end!!
This was an extremely well written slow burn RH. Michael, Buster, Ian and Jane’s story was centered on all of them getting to know and love each other and making their relationship work. I am usually not someone into slow burns either but this book still really held my attention the whole way thro and the sexy times we were givin were so freaking HOT!!!!
If you are someone that enjoys a really really well written and just plane and simply good RH book then this is a definite MUST READ!!!

Conservative Yet Pleasing!

I don't typically read slow burn RH but I really did enjoy reading this book. Throughout most of the book I caught myself grinning at my kindle while I read. I felt silly but I just couldn't help! The author did a fantastic job of showcasing each of the characters, their quirky personalities, their amusing banter and their personal interactions. I loved seeing how organically their relationship formed and blossomed. I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys books that are lighthearted and fun with just enough drama to not drown out the rest! Looking forward to reading other books by Kristin Coley...

Jane gets sent to New Orleans by her parents to stay with friends for the summer while her parents are on a missionary trip to Africa. When she arrives she finds her parents were duped by their alleged friends. While trying to figure out what to do she is attached by a guy and rescued by two brothers. When Michael and Ian find out what is going on they insist on helping her by giving her a job. The past that Ian has been trying to escape by drinking catches up to them as they all start to fall in love with each other, including the bodyguard, Buster. After foiling the attempts from Ian's ex they all move in together but what will Jane's parents think when they return from a year in Africa.

What about Buster?

Since I keep getting kicked out of this, I will keep this shorter. I loved a lot of things about this story, and I REALLY hope there is a sequel. The characters are strong and appealing. The author gave Jane a great background story that explains her maturity and level headedness despite her sheltered upbringing in other areas. The backstory and family dynamics with Michael and Ian was very good, and the bad girl suitably bad. However, poor Buster who was a GREAT character was just an afterthought. The author treated like he was just a servant too much of the time. I didn't like it. Michael could have used more time with Jane, too. I hope another book addresses this.

A charming read!

When the heroine finds herself stranded in an unfamiliar city for the summer, she's rescued by three gorgeous men...

A lovely journey of finding love and falling in love with three men.

A charming read though at the times the language was just getting annoying and I felt it was not relevant for them to have to speak so proper like that especially the heroine as it was just odd because she would speak proper then go back to her way of speaking. It was not consistent.

Full of pain, betrayal, trust, love, family and romance.

Perfect for readers of contemporary reverse harem romances.

A wonderful well written book that was considered reverse harem and it had a slow burn. I am a novice to these type books but all I can say is WOW this sucked me in and turning page after page till completion. Jane has no money no place to stay for the summer, trying to figure out how she was going to survive. Then she runs into her rescuers Michael, Buster, and Ian and it become all about getting to know each other to their HEA

Excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed this entire novel and it is longer than most but there were no lulls or boring parts at all. The pace of the story moved along very well. Excellent characters; you could really feel their emotions; they came to life for me. Great banter and camaraderie between the characters. Charming romance, interspersed with intrigue, drama, suspense and humour. I highly recommend this read! :)

I enjoyed this book, with the characters coming to life off the pages. Jane believes she is “plain” but Ian, Michael, and Buster couldn’t disagree more. These men rescue her and she rescues them in return, her from physical peril and them from emotional terrorism. This book thoroughly charmed me, I look forward to Ms. Coley’s next novel.
