A lovely and skillful retelling of the classic play, punctuated with quotes from the original text. The illustrations are exquisite, full of whimsy and grace.

My daughter and I are slowly adding to our base knowledge and appreciation of William Shakespeare by learning a bit about the man and his works though ever increasing in size picture books, till we read the actual play. Earlier this week we read Bruce Coville’s beautiful scaled down adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, which was told more from the point of view of Romeo. Barabara Kindermann’s version was an equally well done, both in verse and illustrations but more so from Juliet’s perspective. Comparing and contrasting these two works has furthered our desire to read more.

You can't get any more classic love story than Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare embodies human passion, hatred, prejudice, and loyalty in this, one of his most famous works.
