One day, Song Shuhang was suddenly added to a chat group with many seniors that suffered from chuuni disease. The people inside the group would call each other ‘Fellow Daoist’ and had all different kinds of titles: Palace Master, Cave Lord, True Monarch, Immortal Master, etc. And even the pet of the founder of the group that had run away from home was called ‘monster dog’. They would talk all day about pill refining, exploring ancient ruins, or share their experience on techniques. However, after lurking inside the group for a while, he discovered that not all was what it seemed...
SUMMARY AT BOTTOM up to chapter 230 1.5 stars, some parts disliked
This is a lighthearted, modern-day xianxia. The mc is a niceguy(TM) who is aimless. The story is full of random problems falling into the mc's lap and randomly being resolved. The story sometimes has attempted humor. If you don't think that sounds great, this book isn't for you.
Characters: 2/5 okay The characters really are varied and interesting. However, every character is so flat and inorganically written, that I can't help but feel nothing when thinking about them. They do not feel like humans. "But Alex," you say, "they are cultivators, and should be quirky and different..." Yes, but not in this way. They all feel so flat that they aren't even quirky. We only hear about them when it is convenient to the mc, and they are always either being verynice(TM) and helping the mc or talking about past fails that are intended to be comedic. Very flat.
World: 1/5 disliked Because it is the modern world, I came into this with an expectation of comprehensive worldview. However, in this story cultivators are running around smashing up the ISS and swapping astronauts and having it broadcast on live tv and then saying "I'll fix it lol." Then the story gives no more elaboration. It feels so fake and low-effort that I'm annoyed. This hand-waving would be permissible in a fantasy world, when I can just assume that there are various unknown factors that let things be hand-waved away, but it does not fly when the setting is the world that I know well.
Story: 1/5 disliked This just isn't the kind of story I like. The mc is not driven by a meaningful goal, as of yet. The story is driven by random lucky happenings that involve the mc. The story elements are all resolved just as randomly as they came in. The allies are all just tools to help the mc. The bad guys are each just road blocks to be randomly disposed of. Every character can be fully summarized in 1 sentence.
I'm surprised by how bad I found this story, considering how highly recommended it was.
While the plot does progress slowly, there were few times where it left me bored or unhappy. If you're looking for lots of combat and mostly just emphasis on weak to strong, I wouldn't read this, as most of the time and effort is spent developing the relationship between characters in a comedic way. Overall I loved "Cultivation Group Chat", it's made me laugh out loud several times, and it cheers me up when I feel depressed.
Really really good. All the characters stay relevant (although apparently not everything is resolved at the end, but the series is super long so eh). No mindless killing, very funny, etc. Definite breath of fresh air if you've previously read a bunch of the more "generic" stuff, like Against the Gods, Martial God Asura, Tales of Demons and Gods, or even the slightly "good" ones: Coiling Dragon, World of Cultivation, Stellar Transformations, Desolate Era, etc.
However, the translator really took creative liberties when translating stuff.
Godbrandy mistranslated a lot of names and terms. Not too bad initially, but gets worse. I.e. when the MC's literal title running joke "Tyrant" (pronounced 'ba') Song is uttered by other people, they stutter and say it twice, resulting in the gag "Ba ba" (dad) Song. Godbrandy translated it as Tranny Song. Just wtf???
Also he doesn't translate the immortality terms properly, there's 3 different types. Stage 10 cultivation is supposed to mean "long life", i.e. someone who has infinite lifespan but can still be killed. There's a different ability/property dubbed "Undying" which means can't be killed by damage, but still has a lifespan. Only with both do you get true immortality as defined in this series' lore. Godbrandy translates the Stage 10 as Immortal. Very misleading.
Series review: a good premise and it was pretty entertaining for a while. the author kinda lost me when his prejudice on trans people was made pretty apparent in the story, and the plot felt like it really slowed down and got a bit eh sometime after it was revealed the main character was actually just some guy.
Nice read, slice of life contemporary cultivators. Wish the romance actually went somewhere, definitely bait/switch with what it suggests in early chapters. I think I read 1000 chapters before a kiss...yet the series is tagged romance.
DNF. Thought it might be gay. Didn't seem to be gay. Also the format just didn't hold enough interest for me personally. Found it to be kind of cute, but honestly just not for me personally.
This is one of the funniest novels I've ever read. Sadly the novel got so complicated with it's world building that it's really hard to enjoy the fun characters and their interactions. If author dumbed it down a bit this would be peak.
