It Takes a Church to Raise a Parent: Creating a culture where parenting for faith can flourish

Rate this book
Parents are the primary disciplers of their children, but we as a church are called to be their community who supports them as a family, equips them to succeed, and cheers them on the path of parenting for faith. This book will help children's, youth and senior leaders to learn how to position themselves for maximum impact, develop foundational values and practices to operate out of, and establish practical steps to shape a culture where parenting for faith can flourish.

Rachel Turner has written a good book here with some wonderful ideas. One dominant image is that the church needs to be more like IKEA! That is, in IKEA before any purchases are made, the 'customer' is walked through made up rooms - lived examples. Her challenge then is for the church-family to provide parents experiences to see and opportunities try behaviours. She is also strong on not being 'Christian-parenting skills focused' but on encouraging parents to be open and communicative with their children about everything.

This book alone then is rather light on particular guidance for Christian parents, or churches on building 'faith in the family. This is largely because Turner has written about this before extensively and because this book is really a foundation for her course 'Parenting for Faith' - available from BRF. As such I found the second half of the book diffuse, and probably would have absorbed it better as talk with bullet points!

3.5 - While the author comes from a more evangelical perspective than I do and is from the UK (so some terminology is different), this book has some good ideas and reminders of how the church can support parents as their child’s faith educators, rather than usurping that responsibility. I especially liked the chapter on Parenting for Faith and Children’s Ministry. I will be sharing excerpts with my Sunday school teachers to help them with their communication with parents.

Great Book! This has really encouraged me in my ministry with families. As a Children's and Families minister, I find the childrens part of the role so much easier, but this has given me lots of fresh ideas to connect with parents too. I am really looking forward running a parenting for faith course at my church over the coming months.

This book really caused me to reflect about my role in the church. I found that the book is not just a "parenting" book, but a book that would benefit everyone regardless if you have children or no children. It was insightful and encouraging. I would recommend it.

Felt it was very much coming from a leadership perspective. As in what the leaders/preachers in the church can do to support. Also much of the stating the obvious. But an easy to read and understand book.

The information here is solid, but there is not much new. Other than a couple of small specifics, I don’t see much take-away that I’ll use going forward.

Important teaching on how to help parents disciple their children. And to learn where the church has a role and where the parents has to be equipped to take responsibility
