Ok, look at the cover. Isn't it pretty? I love the colors. But her hair stole the show for me. It's gorgeous, isn't it? I was half hoping there would be some hair care tips in these pages. What I wouldn't give to have hair like that.

This was the first book I've read from Shelli Stevens and the first book I've read in this series. I'm happy to say it can be read as a stand-alone. Which means no one has an excuse to miss out.

This book had me hooked from the beginning. In the first chapter, we have Brett admitting he hadn't "wanted a girlfriend or even needed one. Well, maybe he needed one for certain reasons, but there were ways around that. Without the commitment and the risks." A man after my heart right there.

Then we meet Kenzie and we see the two of them together. They have such wonderful chemistry. Their banter is comfortable, flirty and tastefully naughty. There was a lovely conversation about masturbation. I even learned a new acronym BOCOD (Beating Off Cut-Off-Date) something I wish I had known about during the three years I spent in a long distance relationship.

The story itself was sweet. Kenzie was scarred after a near miss years ago, Brett was patient and understanding and helped her overcome her past. Brett hadn't trusted women for a long time after being hurt time and time again, Kenzie shows he can trust her. I get it, in summary, it sounds like a story we've all read a couple dozen time before. This book gave me the perfect amount of tension, drama, and angst.

What made this book different was the authors use of euphemisms and innuendo. "Sausage goes in the crescent roll," had me laughing out loud. Try explaining that one to the hubby... seriously. I tried for nearly 2 minutes before he told me comparing a penis to a sausage isn't funny for men. It seems the imagery of being bitten that way is quite a turnoff.

My one and only complaint, and it's not something that affected the story, is how overused the word "aye" is through these pages. Kenzie is from Scotland, I understand that's a common phrase there. Sometimes when writing is too conversational, it doesn't read super well. Toward the end, I felt agitated every time I saw that word. But, like I said, it didn't affect the story at all.

Overall, Top Shelf was a quick fun read perfect for a lazy Saturday afternoon. I recommend it to anyone wanting to read a book that will have you smiling for every page.

Shelli Stevens is a new author for me and ‘Top Shelf’ is my first attempt at the McLoughlin series which I can confidently say worked pretty well as a standalone.

Though that was probably as far as it went for me. If it started out well, with some kind of anticipation that built between Kenzie and Brett, that was all dashed away when it became clear that this was going to shape up to be a story about a man who behaved like a world-class moron (taking the romantic stereotypes a little too far here) and a woman who let herself be a pushover for over half of it.

For a story that’s this brief, I had frankly expected more from both protagonists, and felt disappointed when their moving forward was at best, a jerky start-stop before a metaphorical race to the finish. The hesitation to become a serious couple suddenly moved to marriage in a way that left me bewildered and incredulous, and that the book ended somewhat abruptly wasn’t that much of a satisfactory ending for me.

Just awesome! I have loved every book in this series and this one is no exception. I adore the McLaughlin clan and I just can't get enough of them. This is Kenzie's story and what a wild ride it is.

Trusting men other than her brothers and father isn't something Kenzie McLaughlin can do. Then she meets Navy officer Brett Craven and she thinks maybe, just maybe, he might be the one to take a chance on. Then he disappears for six months without a word. Now he's back in the family pub asking for a chance to explain!

Don't miss this one. I highly recommend it.

I’ve been reading this author for several years and have liked everything I’ve ever read by her, butaward The McLaughlins series is by far my favorite and her latest release Loch and Key is my favorite in the series to date. I knew Kenzie McLaughlins’ story would be a special one just as I knew it would take a special man to break through the walls she built around herself following an attack years ago. I loved that this author didn’t shy away from the apprehension, the guilt, and the healing process. That despite everything she wrote a heroine who is strong, sure, and while cautious is friendly and outgoing. That she wrote a hero who is sympathetic but doesn’t coddle. Most of all I love that this heroine still believes in love and the hero while claiming he never wants to give his heart away again can’t help but do so. this book offers a strong plot, engaging characters, and a sexy and pleasurable love story.

I can’t help but love Kenzie and her snappy attitude and friendly nature. I feel for her with three over protective brothers who vow to keep her safe after an incident 9 years earlier. She freely admits she tunes men out, they aren’t on her radar and she really is okay with that. So imagine her surprise when she bumps into a man who 6 months earlier on the eve of his deployment she promised to have dinner with him upon his return.

Brett Craven knows he should stay away from McLaughlins Pub and the waitress he met six months ago but he’ll admit the fiery woman has been in his thoughts many times throughout the six months he’s been gone. Returning to the pub where she worked he’s disappointed she’s not working but as he’s walking out she’s walking in and it somehow feels like fate.

Once these two finally got together I really enjoyed their easy way with one another. Brett was just laid back enough to not make Kenzie feel pressured or rushed and he let her lead when she needed to. They were very upfront and honest about what they wanted from one another and even when their feelings began to change neither one put pressure on the other to force a change. I felt they had a very mature relationship and communication between them was key.

We were treated to scenes with all of Kenzie’s brothers and their significant others as well as Kenzie’s roommate and co-worker Delonna. I always love the scenes when the whole family is together and when they get to grill Brett it was pretty entertaining.

Without ruining the plot for anyone I will say that Kenzie does run into the man who attacked her a couple of times in this book and one scene takes a scary turn for her. There is also a scene where she is remembering the attack. While these scenes are tense and she is in danger during one scene, the outcome is a good one.

I so appreciate author Shelli Stevens for writing this book and for letting this heroine’s courage and strength show throughout. Loch and Key is the poster child for complicated relationships, but in the end it proves that patience, understanding, forgiveness, and a will to survive trumps everything.

Top Shelf is previously published as Loch and Key, it has a new cover and title. This is the 3rd book in The McLaughlins series and it's a contemporary romance with a 2nd chance trope.

Navy Chief Brett Craven has been burned twice in the past so he has a real hard time with trusting women. He has no intentions of ever being in a serious relationship again and if he ever gets married again it will be after he retires from the Navy. However, when he meets Kenzie McLaughlin, the youngest of the McLaughlins, a pretty redhead with spunk and when he can't stop thinking about her he knows he is in trouble.

Kenzie McLaughlin was sexually attacked 9 years ago and it has changed her life. Making her distrusful of men, except her father and brothers. She has not dated since the attack but when tall and drop dead sexy Brett comes strolling into the family pub he doesn't hesitate to make his interest known. Can Kenzie and Brett let go of their trust issues to find out if they can handle the long haul?

Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) So we finally got Kenzie's story and if you have been keeping up with the series you have also and if you haven't read the previous books, you should to give your more. Anyway, Kenzie has had a difficult time and since the rape attempt she doesn't date, she is living scared and she is tired of it. Kenzie had met Brett in the last book right at the end so we were wanting to know what happens with him. I have to say at first I was excited a hot sailor who doesn't, but then he disappoints me and I kind of wish that Kenzie had made go thru a little more hoops because she had finally been excited to go out with someone and then he is stupid. Luckily he ended up realizing it, but still more groveling should have been involved..So now my friends I am going to anxiously wait for Alec's turn. Enjoy!

I’m a little torn over this one. I was pretty excited about Kenzie’s story. I really liked her in the last two books and I couldn’t wait to read about her and Brett. To me, nothing really was happening until the last 10 minutes of the book and that was pretty rushed. Kenzie did not seem like the same girl in the last two and I was getting a wee bit bored. I didn’t love it or hate it, it was just meh.

I really enjoyed this book more than I did with the previous one. It's a fun quick read full of steamy romance. Perhaps it was too short, I wouldn't have minded spending more time with the main characters. Can't wait for the next book in the series!

Oooooohhhhhh boy! This was by far my favorite of the three books in this series so far. And judging by the length of the other reviews for this series, this one is not going to be short either. Lol.

I have loved Kenzie's playful attitude and great personality. And really, she is doing quite well after an incident 9 years ago that changed her and her family's lives forever. Because of that incident, she hasn't dated since then and really who could with three over-protective brothers anyway? It would be difficult but Kenzie is content to sit back and enjoy life as it is. She knows that she will eventually love again, just not any time soon. But when a man from the Navy, Brett, comes back in her life to take her up on that date she promised him six months ago before he shipped off, she starts feeling as if she could get her feet wet and start her climb back into the dating pool with him. She agrees and they go to Applebees. Yes, Applebees of all places. Talk about a knockout first date right there. But Brett more than impresses her (and a knockout kiss) and Kenzie agrees to a second date. But then Brett never shows up for that date. Fast forward some months later, Kenzie decides to finally go out with another guy. Decides it pathetic to keep thinking about Brett and their one date when he didn't even have the decency to show up for the second. But fate had other plans and threw the two at one another on her first date with a the second guy she's attempted to date since the incident. And when that date turns out to be a selfish jerk her got hammered, Brett decides he was a fool to have let her go and decides he wants to win her back so to speak. I love how things went from here.

I found myself really drawn to Brett. And it's not just because he is a military man (love me a man in uniform!), but he is a great person all around. And sexy. Can't forget to throw that in there. Again. He knew by how Kenzie acted with their first date that there was something more than what meets the eye. He knew something from her past had made her cautious with men and he knew how to approach her. He made her feel comfortable with him and I loved that. Through these three book, I was feeling mighty protective of her myself and felt she was in good hands with Brett. Another thing he had going for him, he was honest wit himself. He knew that if he went on that second date with Kenzie that his life would change and he wouldn't be able to let her go. I loved that he just knew deep down that she was different. I love a man who knows his feelings and is smart enough not to deny it! And when he sees her again after his asinine behavior standing her up, he goes in taking it one day at a time. He was in it all the way before she was.

And OMG! The ending in this one. I know I said the second one had my heart rate going but this one had me freaking out so bad! I wanted to jump in and help her myself. I was eating this book up. I'm pretty sure I read this in one sitting with breaks only to feed my boys. This has been my favorite so far. Now, we have Aleck's book left and I cannot freaking wait! I can tell I'm going to love his struggle with a certain bartender who he is denying feeling for. Now the countdown begins!

Like her brothers Kenzie doesn't have a filter, "realization dawned and her eyes went round. "You're that bloody sailor I promised to have dinner with." Brett he is a funny drunk, "bread. That doesn't sound - oh my God." He spun to the group of sailors. "Which one of y'all is driving me home? Can we go to Taco Bell?" Kenzie she's not a shy girl in the bedroom actually she's not shy anywhere, "left only in his briefs, he watched her wide-eyed reaction as she stared at his d***, straining against the fabric. "You'd best let that guy out," she murmured huskily. "He looks a bit in pain." I do love this series but I'm telling you I can't wait for Aleck's book he and Delonna have this back and forth thing going on.

This is Kenzie McLaughlin and Brett Craven's story.
Kenzie grunted and adjusted the massive box in her arms. She took a few more stumbling steps before depositing it—or dropping it—to the hardwood floors. She winced at the crunching of glass. Might need to buy new picture frames.
“Another box, another day closer to moving in,” the excited female voice quipped from behind her. “You need some help, roomie?”
Hands on her hips, Kenzie turned to grin at Delonna. “I think we’re good. Aleck’s right behind me bringing in another couple of boxes from his car.”
Brett Craven had been so determined to get out of the crowded hangar he hadn’t realized Petty Officer Simmons had been quick on his heels. He arched a brow at the younger man.
the weather can be a little moody this time of year up here. There was something to be said about being back in the cool drizzle of the Pacific Northwest.
Three of his orders he’d been fortunate enough to get stationed here on the island. With him coming up on retirement, he hoped these would be his last orders. He planned to stick around.

If you’ve followed The McLaughlins series then you’ll know of Kenzie’s experience, and like me, have probably been waiting for her story. Kenzie has valid trust issues with men and right now the men in her family are about the only ones she truly can trust. Until she met Brett. And that meeting could change everything for her… for the better or the worse.

For the most part I really liked Brett, until he (like many partners in a relationship) does something unthinkingly and just dumb. He’s been hurt badly in his past and in his own way he has trust issues as well. Unfortunately, Kenzie does as well and that mistake with Kenzie may cost him his happy ever after future. I wanted Kenzie to find happiness with an awesome man… and she did eventually, but he’s also human and makes dumb mistakes. The banter, flirting, and connection between Brett and Kenzie is fun, believable and shows the chemistry that is sparking between them. They simply need to work a bit on that relationship, and isn’t that true for all couples. It’s really hard to find that perfect fairy tale romance in the real world.

I had fun with Kenzie and Brett’s romance, and that really is the entire point. Although I always strongly suggest reading a series from the beginning to get the most entertainment value and picking up on those small nuances that don’t always appear in an individual’s story… you could read Top Shelf as a standalone romance. You could, but I still think you’ll get more from the story if you understand the past, but that’s my opinion. I’d recommend this story and this series to any Contemporary Romance reader who enjoys a believable story, human and flawed characters and some interesting secondary characters that make the story come alive.

Top Shelf by Shelli Stevens is book three of the McLaughlin Series. Youngest and only girl among the siblings has her story here. It will not be a problem to have not read the other books in the series, if you start with this one. All the brothers make an appearance in the story, but it is a stand-alone with a complete HEA. One of the main characters is in the military but I would not say this is a military story as such.

All in all it is an okay story. I liked Kenzie and Brett even with their glaring shortcomings. While the story flows with a couple of time lapses, it is predictable. It became obvious early on, that the past villain would not stay in the past. His lack of judgement in the end seemed too stupid for someone who had evaded justice thus far. Then in all honesty the ending felt that it was just too brisk so that a teaser could be included concerning Kenzie’s brother with her roommate.

This series is on the steamier side. The talk as well as some of the scenes are explicit in nature. Still no cheating, sharing or one-night stands. Fans of this type of contemporary romance will enjoy this McLaughlin’s story.

This is book number three in the series and it begins where it leaves off with book number two, with Brett returning and still wanting to take Kenzie out on a date. Once she finally agrees to go with him and to somewhere other than her brothers bar. They actually have a good time or so she thought until he never gets in touch with her again. Already having issues with dating and finally going out on one in years, she is wondering what she did wrong or if she missed read the signs. Her issues are explained along with what happened to her. Brett is still dealing with a wife who cheated on him when he first joined the Navy and now feels it would be wrong to ask any women top put up with his career until after he retires. That is until after months go by and the two of them run into each other and she confronts him on why he did not call, and if she did something wrong or if he is just a jerk. The two of them begin to realize that they are good for each other and decide to see where it goes. This is a good love story with characters from the other two books, and some issues from the other books get worked out in this book. Overall without giving away too much I really liked this book very much. I received this book from Netgalley.com. I gave it 4 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com

I really enjoyed this book! It is book #3 in the McLaughlin series, but I read it without reading the first two books. It absolutely reads as a standalone. I can tell what the other books were about/which relationships they covered, but didn't feel like I was missing anything important in this story.
I loved the McLaughlin siblings and I enjoyed the dialog with their Scottish phrasing and dialect. One of the biggest things I loved about this book was there wasn't any unnecessary relationship drama (beside 1 part). Kenzie and Brett were honest with each other and didn't hold back with their insecurities and feelings. So many romance books I read annoy me to no end because one or both of the main characters aren't honest with their feelings or don't trust their partner when they reveal their feelings. I loved that this book didn't have any of that. Something was wrong? They talked about it. One of them felt a certain way? They talked about it. absolutely loved that aspect of things! I am now looking forward to reading books #1 & #2 in this series since I enjoyed this book so much. I'm so glad I "found" this talented new-to-me author!
Thank you very much to Tule Publishing & NetGalley for the advanced copy!

This is the third in a series about the McLaughlins, a Scottish family on Whidbey Island in Washington state. Kenzie McLaughlin works at the family pub. She sarcastic and funny, but hasn’t recovered from an attempted rape a decade earlier. So she has trouble trusting guys. And the hero, Brett, a Navy officer who is deeply attracted to her abandons her after one evening because he doesn’t want to get serious about a woman when he’s going to be going out with the Navy for months at a time. When they meet up six months later, he decides that he shouldn’t have been so cowardly before. She forgives him and romance follows.

I didn't feel all that crazy about either character. Brett had treated her poorly after their first evening together and he should have been better than just standing her up. Kenzie is supposed to still be having problems from the attempted rape, but she has no qualms about engaging in a lot of sexy, suggestive talk. It’s all rather unbelievable who is supposed to have the problems with guys that she does.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.

This is my first time reading a Shelli Stevens book and I really enjoyed it. Although this book works well as a standalone, I honestly think this could have been a 5 star review for me if I had read the previous two books in the series and had been more connected to the characters from the beginning.

Kenzie is feisty and strong but a traumatic event in her past has made trusting men a challenge for her. It is still refreshing to see her working toward letting someone in. Brett is Navy man who has been burned in his past and doesn't think he can do long term relationships anymore. I enjoyed their chemistry and connection and appreciated how they respected each others views and feelings.. It felt like a story of two people growing and healing together whereas a lot of romances I read seem to involve one character saving the other and I found that refreshing.

I definitely plan to go back and get to know the rest of the McLaughlins now that I have discovered Shelli Stevens and the characters she has created.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I fell in love with this series when I read book one , One More Round and then again with book 2, Straight, No Chaser. This one too was a wonderful story about family, love and overcoming fears and adversities.
This story belongs to Kenzie, the youngest sibling and only girl of the family. As a teenager she was attacked and that has made her cautious of men and dating. That is , until Navy chief Brett Craven shows up.
But he too has personal disappointments , trust issues and doesn’t want anything serious.
Watching these two interact and develop feelings , as well as how caring Brett was with Kenzie, was both fun and touching.
It’s a story about taking chances, trusting someone special, letting go of fears, and giving love a chance. It’s also a story about the power of love within a family.
Definitely a story worth your time. Can’t wait to see what Ms Stevens has in store Aleck, the oldest sibling.
I was entrusted this ARC by Netgalley and Tule. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Book three in Shelli Stevens’ pub-centred series The McLaughlins, Top Shelf is the story of daughter of the family Kenzie. Gorgeous and friendly but wary of men after an attempted rape years earlier left her scarred, Kenzie hasn’t dated since. She’s attracted to Brett and prepared to date him but mixed signals leave her hurt and confused.
Brett is a navy chief who is also wary of relationships after his former wife and a girlfriend that followed the failed marriage both cheated on him while he was at sea. He just doesn’t trust women and tends to opt for light and fun hook-ups with no strings attached.
I enjoyed watching these two dancing around each other, fighting the attraction, giving into the physical pull but resisting the emotional aspects. For me there was a little too much emphasis on the physical aspects in the sex scenes. I’d have liked less of that and a little more of the emotions there, but I still enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the next one.

I’ve read books by this author before so when I saw this book I had to get my hands on it, to find out if it was going to be like her other books I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Well I can tell you that it was and I can’t believe that I haven’t read more by this author lately, that is going to change I can tell you lol. I especially loved the characters and their interactions throughout the story, they had me laughing, smiling etc the whole way through the book. I got some funny looks I can tell you while reading this book lol but it was so worth it. Can’t believe that I had forgotten how amazing of a Author Shelli Stevens is. This book has a great storyline that I really liked and the chemistry between the characters was fantastic and just right for this story. The author has done such a great job with this book and I would highly recommend this book to everyone

Love, The McLaughlins!! A family that is very close and full of love. Kenzie McLaughlin has trust issues from the past until she meets Navy Chief Brett Craven, who doesn't believe in permanent relationships after he has burned in the past. After one date, he knows he can't have more. While out on ship, Kenzie is often on his mind. Now he has returned and needs to make amends to her.

Loved both of these characters, both with pasts that they need to overcome. Love the closeness of the McLaughlin family. This is a book that I could not put down, read in one evening. Part of a series but can be read as a stand alone, but you too will fall in love with this Irish family. Can't wait to read Aleck's story.

3 1/2 Star Review......

Top Shelf is book 3 in The McLaughlins by Shelli Stevens, and the much-awaited story of Kenzie. While a lot of series are designed that each book can be read as a standalone, to really do this series, and the characters justice, you really should start at the beginning.

While I did enjoy this instalment, I wasn’t a huge fan of Brett. His character left me cold and I felt that considering Kenzie’s background and her apprehension to take a chance on dating again, she gave Brett too much leeway, and should have made him work harder.

That said, it’s a good read and a satisfactory edition to the series. Bring on Alec and his HEA!

Top Shelf by Shelli Stevens is book Three in The McLaughlins series. This is the story of Brett Craven and Kenzie McLaughlin. I haven't yet read the previous books, so for me this was a standalone book.
This was a really great romance that had two people that have been hurt before one a little more than the other. Brett wasn't looking for anything real or permanent and Kenzie had been hurt and only trusted the men in her family. Sparks fly and trust starts to be built between the two of them. There was a few hiccups in the building of their trust but in the end love always wins.
Really enjoyed this book!

We finally get Kenzie's story. I love Kenzie and how she handles her overprotective brothers. A chance meeting with Brett before he shipped out and a promised to see him again when he got back just makes my heart happy. Kenzie fights any relationship with Brett and with good reason once you get to really know her past. Brett seems to be gun shy too with relationships. But can you really blame a guy with his unlucky track record. I love how he eventually breaks Kenzie's walls down little by little. They seem so right for each other. I love this series and I can't wait for more of the McLaughlins.

I loved this book. It's my first book in this series and I wasn't confused at all. Kenzie works at her family pub as a waitress is closed up person but it doesn't take long for Brett to open her up. Brett is Cheif in the navy who just came back from deployment overseas. Kenzie has very protective brothers who would do anything for her and that includes her friends and roommate. I really enjoyed this book read it in one sitting. I was hooked.

I really enjoy the McLaughlin’s series from Shelli Stevens. They contain wit and dilemmas surrounding the brothers and sister living in Washington and coping with the opportunity to love that each of them faces. In Top Shelf, it is Kenzie’s story of finding love, through a series of ups and downs created by a cautious, once bit Navy officer. Plus, Kenzie has a horrible experience in her past that truly thwarts her desire to reach out and connect. The story of how she and Brett finally connect is fraught with turmoil, misunderstandings and misconceptions.

This was a great book with interesting characters and storyline. The main characters, Kenzie and Brett, had a rocky start to their relationship, but once it got going it was seriously hot. The sub-plot with Kenzie’s stalker seemed to have a rushed end, and the over-protectiveness of her family and friends was a bit much at times. Having said that, I still really enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more books from this author.

Top Shelf is the third book in the McLaughlin’s series. Each story focuses on one of the four siblings and this story I’d focuses on Kenzie. Being the only girl her brothers have always been protected but after one horrible night her brothers now have upped the protective factor.
Brett has been to the McLaughlin pub a few times, and Kenzie seemed to hold his attention to the point that he asked her on a date for when. He returned from being deployed. When he returns he wants to make good on his offer, but will Kenzie accept or send him on his way?

What a great read! This is the 3rd book in the series but can be read as a stand alone. This is a feel good romance novel that is about taking a chance on love. I loved that the main characters Brett and Kenzie was honest about their feeling from the beginning. There wasn't any relationship drama in this story. The McLaughlins siblings are a great group of characters. I enjoyed all the Scottish slang words. I would recommend this book. #TopShelf #NetGalley
