This was required reading for my freshman orientation at Macalester College. I remember most the part my mother read and took exception to. That is, the distance that can come between children and parents when the children are better educated. My mother was angry at the suggestion. Later, though, she criticizedme for writing letters home with words she did not understand.
My one nonfiction book of the month but this book was more than simply “how to study in college”. More of being an educated person in general and how we could incorporate that in our daily life. Good read
Read this my freshman year of college and made a huge difference in my attitude and work during those four years and after. Can't recommend this book highly enough.
"To develop such a habit, launch yourself with vigor into anything you decide to do. Whatever you begin, at least begin with enthusiasm. Then carryon with all the verve and imagination at your command. Live every moment to the fullest extent of your resources."
If you have a chance, just read the first few pages and see if your not reeled in.
I have the second edition printed in 1964 (copyrighted 1957) and read it without knowing what to expect, however I found out soon that the way it was written and for the time it was, this book is amazing. It has so much about becoming a better person, and not just in the aspect of college. From how to study, to treating your parents, to socailizing with other people, why you're in college, how to increase your grades... Mind you i've read alot of these types of books to try to clear my head and discover a way to do better in college, but by far, this book beats them all. The ideas presented in this book... amazing, after reading this, I felt the urge to be a better person and go farther in life. This book has set me on the road of fullfillment and true happiness for sure.
Of course now some of it isn't going to apply because it's from 1957, but what does apply (which is about everything) really has given me a better outlook on everything though, to apply these words and not just read them, can be very powerful
