Conversation from yesterday (we are in the middle of reorganizing our bookshelves):

- What's this?

- The 1999 Petit Larousse.

- Yes, but what is it?

- An illustrated French encylopedia.

- Look, why do we need an out-of-date encyclopedia? Isn't all that stuff available online?

- Most of it doesn't go out of date very quickly. And a lot of it isn't available online. It's very good!

- Well, it's quite heavy. I guess we can use it as a doorstop.

- What? Use the Petit Larousse as a doorstop? You can't do that! This is an icon of French culture!

- It's an icon of French culture that's going to be working as a doorstop.

- But French people will be appalled when they see it! This just isn't on! Where are you going?!

- Hey, come back! Come back!

- Oh well.

The most amazing thing about this book of lacrosse rules is that it's the small version. 1785 pages. Seriously. There's a bigger one for people who live in Wellington and Dodge City. Here in Geneva I find the small version perfect even on a windy day.

This is the 1935 edition that my dear friend Caroline got for me in Paris. It is so charming. The illustrated cover is of an iconic French(girl/woman) blowing the fluff off of a dandilion. This is a French dictionary with 6200 illustrations, 140 maps and 220 illustrated tables. This is not French/English.
Lovely worn.
