The Silent Noisy Night

Rate this book
It may have been a silent night
when Jesus came to earth. OR…
It may have been a NOISY night
to celebrate His birth.

The night Jesus was born is frequently referred to as a silent night. But how could it possibly have been silent if Jesus was born in a manger, with cows and sheep and donkeys and probably chickens and mice and birds all celebrating His birth? How could these creatures keep quiet? The Silent Noisy Night takes on a new twist to the Christmas story by exploring what the night may have been like if all the creatures and people celebrated the birth of Jesus in their own God-given, special ways. With cows mooing and donkeys braying, it may have been a very noisy night. This B& H Kids book includes a Parent Connection, an easy tool to help moms and dads (or anyone else who loves kids) discuss the book's message with their child. We're all about connecting parents and kids to each other and to God's Word.

Ever since Christmas my 4 yr old has been asking me a lot of question. She wants to understand about Jesus’ birth and the events that surrounded it. When I came across The Silent Noisy Night by Jill Roman Lord I thought this would be a good book to help her see all the animals that could have been there that night.
We enjoyed the colorful, happy illustrations and we love reading the rhyming verses. This is such a fun book to read and one we will read all year long and not just at Christmas time!

As a Children's Pastor, I am always on the search for good books to add to our Preschool and Nursery areas at church, and so what did I do? I stood at the Walmart Christmas books display reading about twenty Christmas board and picture books in order to find a couple to add to our library. When I first read THE SILENT NOISY NIGHT by Jill Roman Lord and illustrated by Kelly Breemer, I almost cried. This book is an incredibly beautiful, well-illustrated, amazing story that will not only teach young kids various sounds, but will also point to a foundational theological point: the God of Scripture is a God who celebrates.

This is a board book with amazing illustrations, and simple sentences on each page that allow the story to be read quickly, but also allow kids time to look at the pictures and will allow parents and teachers to point out various corners of the pages to see all the animals. Words that are sounds are all highlighted and in bold to allow for kids learning sight words to begin seeing them and correlating each word to the pronunciation and the sound it makes.

I really appreciate here the attention to depict the people in the story as they would have been, not as European, blond-haired, blue-eyed proxies. This allows kids to see the real kinds of people who may have been there at the birth of Jesus, even if some of the animals here such as raccoons may not be animals in the Middle East.

The ending to the book also has a wonderful message for kids surrounding the ways we celebrate the birth of Jesus. This idea of celebration is so important, as we see celebration on the part of God and God's people throughout Scripture, but often find ourselves in the United States of America leaning away from celebration in favor of a more stoic and serious God. We see clearly from stories Jesus told such as the stories of lost things in Luke 15 that all heaven rejoices when someone decides to follow Jesus. The most important aspect of this celebration is that it does not end. In the story of the Prodigal Son, the father tells them to start the party for the son who has come home, but he never tells them to end it. The party continues.

In THE SILENT NOISY NIGHT, kids will discover an incredible world of celebration and how each one of us can use our voices, actions, and songs to celebrate the birth of the Savior.

Look out! This is not your regular run-of-the-mill Christmas nativity kiddie book. This tells the same beloved story but has lots of different animals and a host of sounds or rather noises telling forth the joy of the birth of the Christ Child.

A bit different? Yep! A lot of fun? Absolutely! Reverent? It is! Yet, it is fun and easy-going, and the wonderful story is told with a beautifully joyful and jolly rhyme that rollicks noisily through the age old story of our Saviour's birth. He is our Savior and this fun, sweet book makes no excuses but tells it right out.....

Yes, Jesus is our Savior and
a gift from God above.
He brings us hope and peace and joy
and everlasting love!

It's hard to stay so silent when
we've heard the greatest news.
Let's celebrate our Savior's birth
with neighs and chirps and moos!

So this delightful book is a joy. It is also a sturdy board book that the young hands can handle without Mommy or Daddy worrying about its self-destructing. It is also lightly padded to make it a pleasure to grasp or hug within the little one's arms.

I received a complimentary copy to facilitate this review. Opinions are mine alone and are freely given.

This is a fun and unique view of the night Jesus was born. Was it truly a silent night? Or was it quite noisy? I'm so excited to share this book with my grandchildren and I anticipate many readings to come! I love the way this author engages both children and adults. Highly recommend!

The Silent Noisy Night, written by Jill Roman Lord and illustrated by Kelly Breemer, is an adorable children's book. The padded hardback covers and sturdy pages are ideal since it's best suited for children under 4 years old. The colorful illustrations evoke an sense of celebration and joy. The lilting narrative is sure to engage little ones, especially if the reader makes all the animal sounds.

Since having children, I've told my husband that there's no way it was a silent night when Jesus was born and I like the idea of creation celebrating in response to the birth of Jesus. Much of the book has illustrations reflecting the night of Messiah's birth. However, the last few pages have illustrations of kids participating in modern-day celebrations and I really liked that as I think it could help them connect these things we do (singing Christmas carols, giving gifts, etc.) with the Christmas story.

This book is a Christmas gift for my three year old, so she hasn't seen it yet and I can't add in her reactions, but I'm pretty sure she's going to enjoy this book.

At this time of year we often think of Christmas carols, and among the most popular is of course, “Silent Night”. But what if it wasn’t really all that silent? When we go to church on Sunday morning, we know that we’re supposed to, at least at certain times of the service, be quiet. But Jesus wasn’t born in a church—he was born in a stable; stables have animals, and animals make noise.

In a delightful story The Silent Noisy Night (B&H Kids, 2018) Jill Roman Lord asks us to imagine what it would be like if it weren’t really a silent night, but because of animals, angels, shepherds, and even the townspeople all celebrating the birth of a baby, it was instead quite a noisy evening.

To help the imagination of your ‘littles’, there are wonderful, colorful illustrations by Kelly Breemer.

This is one of the most fun Christmas books for 2-4 years old that I remember seeing. I’m donating my copy to the children’s’ shelter at our local Rescue Mission.

I received a copy of the book in exchange for a review, I was not required to write a positive review, but was instead asked for honest feedback.

Like many children, I grew up with my mom reading “T’was the Night Before Christmas” each year before we went to bed on Christmas eve. While I don’t have any children myself yet, I have felt a strong conviction that I’d like to replace that book with something that centers more on Christ. I’m happy to share that I consider this an excellent choice for little ones. Since it’s a sturdy board book it should be able to stand up against the destructive capabilities of your tiny tots.
We all know the song “Silent Night,” but was the night of Christ’s birth truly silent? Since Jesus was born in a manger that was shared with other animals, it’s easy to imagine there’d be plenty of noise to surround the newborn king. It’s an interesting concept to think about, and kids will enjoy the story as the different animals sounds are added to sing their praises to the Lord. WONDERFUL little story!

This beautifully illustrated and written children's book by Jill Roman Lord and illustrated by Kelly Breemer brings up an interesting question. Was it a very noisy night with animals making noise, people shouting and singing, etc., when Christ was born? Probably so. We know the shepherds returned “glorifying and praising God.” It makes the point that we need to make a joyful noise in praise that our Savior is born after going through all the noises that may have been heard that night.

This is a fun padded board book that I look forward to reading it to my grandchildren when they come for Christmas. It may have been a noisy night, but let's not be afraid to make noise now in praise to our Savior born that night!

(Although this book was given to me to review by B&H Publishing Group and Lifeway, the opinions expressed are my own.)

The birth of Jesus.. was it silent like the song Silent Night or noisy? Well with all the goings on it was probably not so silent! What a fun book to read to your favorite children! This book is fun and filled with lots of pictures for the children to look at. I love how they have words highlighted... like cheered or snorted, perfect opportunity to do those things while reading it! We all know kids end up memorizing books that are read to them enough and I could just see kids inserting those noises as mom, dad, G’ma or G’pa are reading to them. This would become a favorite in any home for the Christmas season!

Was it really a silent night when Jesus was born, as the age old carol declares? This adorable board book supposes it may have been a noisy night with animals in the stable celebrating the birth of the Savior. Simple rhymes in a sing-song pace, it helps little ones imagine what that first Christmas night was like.

Religious book shown to me that just wasn't my cup of tea. It does make more sense than a silent night, though. Why would everything be silent in a barn?

Very likely much more accurate. Fun. I will look for this for the young ones.

Liked the way the noisy night sounds were accentuated in the printed text.
