Surprising Birds is a young children's boardbook measuring 16.5cm x 16.5cm

The book is all about teaching children the names of different colours - there are 11 different colours in the book.

On each double glossy page is an image of a bird. Part of the bird has a flap to lift, under that flap is a colour. The only text in the book is the name of the colour.

I had a hard time trying to decide what I thought of this book as it seemed a little boring to me, as there was quite a lot of dead space on each double page and some of the colours being taught were small - such as blue was the colour of a bird eye.

However, this is a very small child's book, and whilst they might need to be careful with the delicate flaps, there isn't too much going on, on the pages, so they can concentrate on learning the colour, which will hopefully help them to learn it quickly.

You know what, even as an adult I love a good lift-the-flap book (I'm not even ashamed), so it's often a go-to purchase for children - you can only imagine the excitement this gets out of a child of a similar mindset. The idea of this board book is that it will introduce colours, and patterns actually, through various different birds. The birds are designed so brilliantly, with different parts of the bird changing colour and allowing for interaction with the flaps - it's such an engaging, easy way to teach children about colours.

What I think this book is lacking however is the fun element - often books like this are quite basic (as this one is) and so they're good for the first read, the first look at each bird, and then they quickly get forgotten about in favour of another, character-driven animal story of some sort. I think if there had been a little story tying the birds together it would have been a more long-term book we would use.

Nevertheless, a robust, creative book with some brilliantly wacky birds to look at and learn the colours.

This is a fun book teaching very young children about the different colours. ‘Surprising Birds’ is a board book that’s a little smaller than A5 in size and comes with rounded board pages as well as a rounded cover so young children won’t hurt themselves when looking at this book. Inside each double page there’s a very colourful illustration of a bird and a flap to turn. When kids turn the flap a colour will appear along with the word for that colour.

‘Surprising Birds’ is by the same author/illustrator as ‘Big Dog, Little Dog’ and features some equally fun pictures and flaps. Each double page already has an image of a bird which is fun to look at on its own but the pictures often look even more fun when a flap is turned. I enjoyed looking at all the different birds, I especially liked the image of the chicken and what’s under the wing flap.

All of the illustrations are very colourful and have no outlines. They look like block shapes but it’s the sort of illustrations that I just love. I think they are very bold and bright and I love how bright all the colours on each page are. There’s something about the illustrations that I just really love and I know as a child I would have really loved looking at this book again and again. Every word for a colour appears on top of the colour so it’s easy for kids to learn the different basic colours, however with the colour ‘blue’ the writing appears below the blue eye, on the black neck of the bird which might confuse some kids so it’s important for an adult to read this with kids the first time and make sure they understand where the blue colour is.

Despite the blue colour issue I raised I still really like this book. There’s something so fun about flap books that it just gets kids interested in re-reading them. It’s this along with the simple and fun illustrations that make learning about colours so fun. I’d recommend this book for very young kids to learn their colours, I’d also recommend this book as just a fun book for the very young to look at.

This is a lift-the-flap book which is about colours. Each page has a picture of a bird in black and white. Once the flap is lifted a colour is revealed with the accompanying word.
Lift-the-flap books are a firm favourite with pre-school children. They love to lift the flaps and see what is underneath even if they have read it loads of times before & know what is underneath.
I wasn't that keen on the pictures in this book. On each page there is a bird - no context or background just the bird. Once the flap has been lifted then there is the colour. That is all there is to it. I wasn't that keen on the bird pictures as I found them a bit clunky.
This isn't a book that I would choose to buy for a child. There are other lift the flap colour books on the market that I would prefer. However I can see that some people would love this book for all the reasons I am not so keen on it!
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.
