The In-Between

Rate this book
After an unwanted cross-country move in the middle of senior year, all 17-year-old Ava Chase wants to do is fit in, but she quickly realizes that life isn't always fair. The tiny town of Fox Field, Colorado, has its secrets, and the local legend surrounding several drownings at Devil’s Head Lake piques her curiosity. As she gets closer to the truth, a stream of relentless nightmares causes her to question everything, including her sanity. Plunged into a new and strange world that she never knew existed, Ava must accept a harsh truth; her entire life is a lie.

Kade Richter had a pretty simple life plan. Step one, graduate high school; step two, figure the rest out later. But after a family camping trip goes tragically wrong, his life takes an unexpected turn. He should be dead, but instead, he’s stuck in the in-between, a horrible place of fire and death, tasked with watching over a stranger. His assignment; help the girl- free himself. In the beginning, it seemed simple enough. Now, his mentor was gone, and the simple job of protecting the girl was a full-on race to avert the apocalypse. Lost and surrounded by an evil presence so dark it made his skin crawl, Kade isn't so sure he can protect himself anymore, let alone the girl.

Together, they encounter unspeakable evil and come face to face with a horrifying reality - Ava’s not human, and her destiny was never to be just an ordinary teenager. No, her destiny is to save the world.

"This book is intriguing from the very beginning. Easy, quick read with short chapters like James Patterson) and humor (like Janet Evanovich) in spurts from the main character makes this a delightful read. A True Winner!!!!!!! -5 Star Review, Amazon Reviewer

"Captivating easy read. You won't want to put it down once you start. Great storyline and comic relief. Hoping for a second book soon!" -5 Star Review, Amazon Reviewer

I'm finished with The In-Between: Great first book from this author! Well written action scenes and dialogue. The character development is light, but toward the end there was improvement and we learned a lot more. I think some of it had to wait or it would have spoiled the intrigue. We knew the main characters pretty well by the end. Left with a cliffhanger at the end, I cannot wait to read her next installment!

I always like a book I can't put down! And quite a few of the action scenes keep you glued to the story. Also, it has an interesting mythology, building a world that makes you want to visit more and find out how things work. Main point is that this book makes you feel things, funny things, uncomfortable things, scary things and sweet things.

Full disclosure: the author is my daughter-in-law. That said, I'm a very rabid reader of books just like this one. If I didn't think it was worth the read, I'd politely say nothing.

Christmas-Movie Sort of Sweet

There is no better way for me to describe the good parts of this book than as “a Christmas-Movie Sort of Sweet”. The writing is very simple. It is in need of a good editor. The dialogue is painstakingly difficult to get through at times, but there are still parts of it that tug at your heart in the same way that a cheesy Christmas movie tends to do. Overall, I can only give it 3 stars, but am glad I took the opportunity to finish it. I absolutely hate to “DNF” a book, and this one wasn’t stellar, but still had enough redeeming qualities to endure the short read.

This was my first fantasy book. I didn’t quite enjoy it. Some of the chapters were to detailed. What I mean, there was one chapter that described her clothing to a T. I don’t think I needed that much reference on what she was wearing. Another thing I didn’t care for was the forced proximity. I don’t think the author executed that well in the book. Other wise, it is an okay, I’m not a fan of DNFing books. So I stuck it out till the end.

I am a sucker for a great young adult fantasy book. This one is fun, exciting and an easy read. The characters are well developed and the flow of the plot is enticing. This book kept me turning the pages to the very end.
