Although the United States claims to be a tolerant, classless society, various ethnic groups and the poor have been treated differently throughout the history of the country. Barrera looks at inequality of the American Southwest focusing on hispanics but not Native Americans.

Great, thorough analysis of the historical development of the economic roles of Mexicans and Mexican Americans in the southwestern US. Very well researched, important work both for Chicano Studies and for Marxism.
