Personally, I'm not a fan, but an admirer of Javed Akhtar's works. Especially as a lyricist (and not as a storyteller, nope, no Sholay fan here). The reason to pick this up was NMK. Nasreen Munni Kabir is the one go-to author for me whenever I need to delve into Bollywood. Her conversations are always alive and full of anecdotes that make me revisit those songs and movies which are being talked about.
Here, the book has two parts. Talking films, has many details on JA's growing up and his entry into movies. Now this part has a great start while JA actually goes philosophically deep while talking about his early days. However it turns a bit bland when the conversations keep centered around his Bachchan movies, Deewar especially. This section of the book feels incomplete and you want more from it. In Talking Songs, it is rather enjoyable at every page. Talking about his growing up love SDB's songs and also about great lyricists and their technical superiority. Still, I would have loved to read more of his own recent works i.e.Lagaan, DCH and likes.
All in all, a decent diversion for me from the world of fiction. Read it, if you are into our films.
