Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt #9

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt, Vol. 9

An epic story of war and survival set in the legendary Gundam universe!

In the Universal Century year 0079, the space colony known as Side 3 proclaims independence as the Principality of Zeon and declares war on the Earth Federation. One year later, they are locked in a fierce battle for the Thunderbolt Sector, an area of space scarred by the wreckage of destroyed colonies.

On the Nanyang Alliance floating city known as the Rig, Daryl Lorenz and his Zeon infiltration team have made their move to grab the Alliance’s data on the production of the Psycho Zaku. But Claudia—now a convert and servant of the Alliance leader, Sojo Levan Fu—has discovered Daryl’s squad. A massacre is averted after Levan Fu channels his awesome Newtype psychic abilities through Claudia to speak to Daryl, urging him to give up the path of killing. As things come to a head, the Federation assault ship Spartan arrives…

This volume is Gundam at its best -- for two hundred pages the heroes are trying to stop the bad guys from doing something that would endanger the world, but accomplishing the mission requires horrific collateral damage, and you find yourself rooting for the baddies to win.

From what I’ve seen, the best gundam storytelling is all about how there are no true protagonists or antagonists in war and this volume delivers that in spades. Rather than focus on the federation and Io Fleming or Zeon and Daryl Lorenz, this instead focuses on the civilians trying to flee the footing city the Nanyang alliance occupies while it’s bombarded by both the federation and zeon. It completely recontextualizes both of this series protagonists and instead pints them as villains and the result is a relentlessly intense, morally complex volume that stands tall as one of the series greatest high points.

This series has got its hooks in me, for sure. On the one hand it shows awesome giant robot fighting...and then on the other hand it shows the logical human costs of such awesome giant robot fighting. Very compelling.

Damn I hate how this series keeps switching up who I should be cheering for - but that's also the point. Also "Trust" is already the name of a band, but they might not have access to darkwave radio stations

Just an absolute page turner of a manga. So effortless and cool.
