One of the most powerful yet obscure titles written by Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton. Originally published circa 1968 as a fund raising tool for the "Free Huey" defense fund, this book delves deeply into Newton's thinking on a variety of political subjects. With an introduction by Eldridge Cleaver, it represents one of the most poignant tomes of the Black revolutionary period.
“Historically capitalism was a necessity before technology was developed to the point it is now. There was only a very small amount of wealth and only a small amount of people could enjoy this wealth. People had to go without. Technology has developed in such a way that every person should have an abundance of the things he needs. It is no longer necessary for him to toil his whole life without even being able to meet his basic needs. There is no excuse for him not to be totally free. The only reason all human beings do not have food, shelter and medical care today is that the administrators are only interested in their profit. This government and the institutions necessary to make the government function are illegitimate because they are not relating to the people. Therefore, they have no right to exist. In the interest of the people new institutions should be established and the old ones fade and crumble.”
The Genius of Huey P. Newton is one of my favorite books i have read. It's a book about a man who works together with the negro community to fight against police brutality by white police officers and his desire to create a community of negro men and women who are willing to stand against the court and act out against inequality. His plan to make it legal for black men to possess a firearm and have the right to protect life and liberty is put to test when he realizes that not only are the police against him, but the state in which he lives in is against his will to fight for freedom for his people. This book is a lesson ready to be learned, an experience that takes you in depth of the lives of the people closest to Huey, and how Huey proceeds without being stopped to spread happiness and equality within his community.
excellent book...Huey outlined some excellent perspectives of oppression to the people...Huey was so intelligent and he really was fierce as the Minister of Defense in the Black Panther Party. He was a true revolutionary, he also talked about how the ruling class ruled the people in oppression, politics etc. I find his view very believable of his time,he indeed was ahead of his time...we're still experiencing oppression of the people and police brutality today. Huey really was positive and diligent about what he and the Black Panther wanted around this time...he definitely was a genius, he also was a Machiavellian strategic person as well. I may have to get a tattoo to properly honor him, maybe Huey from "The Boondocks" since that character's traits is based on Huey Newton himself.
Beautiful depiction of a warrior mind that loved his people, carried himself with dignity and had many worthwhile ideas. Anyone who thinks this book is about hate is wrong. it's about loving thineself and attempting to find solutions to a diseased and contemptive culture of hate and oppression. We need a movement like the Black Panthers right now! The Black Lives Matter movement is as close as were going to get. It's encouraging to see sensible people of all colors stand against the wrongs of the biggest gang in the nation, police!
