Breaking the Fear Cycle: How to Find Peace for Your Anxious Heart

Rate this book
It seems there is more to fear now than ever, but fear and anxiety are nothing new to human beings--or to God. The Bible calls us to not be afraid on many occasions, and of course we all want to live without fear. But just how is that accomplished when every news item seems designed to get us wringing our hands?Using her own story as a catalyst, Maria Furlough shows readers how to overcome fear for good. She calls readers to make a list of their fears, to choose to bring those fears to God rather than acting on them, and to trust God with the future. She shows how when we give God full control over our lives, choosing his sovereignty over our own ability, we can break the cycle of fear, grow through suffering, and trust God to fulfill his promises of protection and peace.Anyone who is filled with anxiety over their personal circumstances, the state of the world today, or even their fear-clogged social media feeds will welcome this hands-on journey from fear to freedom.

I really like Christian Living books. When I saw the beautiful cover and realized the book was addressing fear and anxiety, I knew I had to request Breaking the Fear Cycle to review. I'm so thankful I did! This book is absolutely worth the read.

Breaking the Fear Cycle: How to Find Peace for Your Anxious Heart by Maria Furlough is one of the best - if not the best - books on this topic that I've read. It dug so deep! So authentic, radical, and soul-changing. It met me right where I was in my own journey of struggling with fear and truly touched my heart. I'm in awe of how, I believe, God used Maria's life, fears, and experiences to impact my own life! Breaking the Fear Cycle was a book I needed. It encouraged me to lean hard on God, and stop running and face my fears. It fed the hope that I don't have to live under the tyrannical rule of anxiety. I know many women who would benefit greatly from reading this book. I'm excited to share it with them!

Breaking the Fear Cycle is done in Bible study format, so you can easily buy copies of the book and go through it for your next study!

Maria Furlough gets to the hard and gritty when talking about fear and suffering. She shares her personal story of losing a child. She talks about what thoughts she had and fears she faced. She also shares a lot of Scripture in this book, and is constantly pointing back to Christ and eternity. Though addressing heavy topics, she adds some humor, and her writing style is lovely.

One of the most powerful quotes of this book, to me, was: "If I didn't kill the fear, the fear was going to kill me." (pg. 17) Dear friends, if you're struggling but know you need to kill your fear, Breaking the Fear Cycle is definitely an amazing tool to take with you on the journey.

I look forward to reading this book again someday. And hopefully other books by Maria Furlough!

I received a copy of Breaking the Fear Cycle from Revell Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

Breaking the Fear Cycle was a good nonfiction read. I liked how the author was so genuine in the book and I really felt for her at times. I learned some helpful tips on dealing with anxiety and was also reminded of others.

I liked how the book ended with stories of other people...and one of those was the author's husband.

All in all, I liked this book and if you are looking for a good read on fear/anxiety, you might want to try this one.

Breaking the Fear Cycle is a great book written by Maria Furlough who knows what it's like to face fear. She shares from her own grief and fear in a way that helps reader experience ways to find freedom from the fear that disables them in day to day situations. This book will help you find peace as you go to God in prayer and seek Him though His word. This is relevant to the culture and society that women face today and I found this book to be very encouraging. I have several chapters highlighted and I really enjoyed this book. This book will inspire you, help you find peace and break the cycle of fear. I give this book 5/5 stars. I can't wait to read it again. A complimentary copy was provided, but a favorable review was not required.

People face situations that cause worry and anxiety almost daily and some of these can lead to disabling fear. Author Maria Furlough has chosen to write about her own experiences with fear and the ways that she has learned to deal with it and she also shares the fear-filled situations of other people in her new book "Breaking the Fear Cycle". Two of the methods she has found successful to find peace for her anxious heart are going to God in prayer and seeking guidance through His Word. This book is filled with Bible passages that have strenghtened her and guided her in her own journey with fear and she has added an appendix titled In Case of an Emergency that allows you to easily find an applicable verse to ease any fears you may face. There are also Questions for Reflection at the end of each of the eleven chapters and a Leader's Guide to use if a group study is desired. Maria Furlough has used her personal experiences to help others and I believe that this book is so very relevant to today's society. Breaking the Fear Cycle is a wonderful resource!

I received a copy of this book from the author but this is my own personal opinion. No review was required.

Fear is something we all experience but struggle to deal with. Fears can even rob us of living a full life and experiencing joy and goodness in the here and now. Many of us even get caught in a perpetual, seemingly never-ending cycle of fear. We long for peace. We wonder how we can experience the peace God promises when we’ve prayed and pleaded but anxiety still runs high or fear paralyzes us. Some of us even experience shame from others, citing a lack of faith in us.

If you resonate with any of this, if you wrestle with little fears in your day to day life, if you find fears consuming you, if you feel stuck in a fear cycle and long to break free, Breaking the Fear Cycle: How to Find Peace for Your Anxious Heart by Maria Furlough is for you.

Maria Furlough knows what it’s like to battle anxiety and fear and be overwhelmed by them. Through a great tragedy in her life, she was forced to confront one of her greatest fears. But before then, Maria shares about her day to day struggle throughout many seasons of her life with fears that held her captive, many that young women and moms will relate to. Maria is a battle worn woman of faith who has experience with fear and facing it head on with Jesus. In doing so, she has also learned how to find peace for her anxious heart.

You’ll find a place free of shame in the pages of this book, but also a voice that speaks boldly and lovingly in a way that will likely bring about conviction concerning your fears and draw you even closer to God’s truth.

From my own personal experience of having had to confront the same fear as Maria, the death of my child, and wrestling and walking with God through it, I can attest to the truth and wisdom that Maria has gained and shares in this book. She shares Biblical truths we need to return to time and time again--because sometimes fear is relentless. And just when you’ve confronted one fear and found peace, another appears, and so you must go back to the truth and walk the way through to finding peace again. That’s where this book met me. In a new season, stuck in a cycle of fear of a different kind. Different fear, same process. No matter what your fear is or if you’re even afraid to name your fear, this book is for you.

With transparency and an ability to balance the honest and ugly ways fear can manifest itself in our lives with a lightheartedness, Maria has written a story that welcomes you as you are and invites you into this journey with her and continually points you back to the truth we find in God’s Word. And like I said, this book isn’t just fluffy faith talk, these words have been lived out and experienced. Furthermore, Maria writes with a simplicity and practicality that offers you a tangible hold on the steps you can take to go from a heart filled with fear to a heart resting in God’s promises, a heart filled with His peace.

Furthermore, I’m not sure I’ve read another author who is quite as concerned for her reader as Maria. At the end of each chapter, Maria offers a prayer for you followed by a set of questions for reflection. Each step of the way, Maria’s words and questions are an invitation extended to you like a gentle hand outstretched to hold yours as you bravely enter into this soul work. She knows the journey to freedom is worth it, and she wants to equip you and walk with you.

Thank you Maria for giving us a glimpse into your heart and share all the lessons you've gleaned through your journey. You’re honest and vulnerability are a blessing. God is using your book to break us fear!

Go check out this book to find out how you can live with an expectant heart when you're stuck in a fear cycle!

I am realizing more and more, as I’m reading this book, how much I have been living in fear.
This book is very real. The author asks many searching questions, including getting you to ask yourself “What are my deepest fears?” “What are things in life that you are most afraid of?” and many more.
This book was written by a lady that lost a child. She found out, while still pregnant, that her child would not live. Oh the fears and heartaches she faced as she processed all of this.

That fear is something that I can relate to just a bit, but from a different angle. You see, last summer, we lost a dear little niece. One that we prayed for oh so much, and hoped against all hope that she would be healed. And yet, God chose to not heal her in the way we hoped. All we wanted to say was WHY??!! How can this be good?

I’m realizing more that I have lived most of my life with too much fear hanging over me. What I am grappling with, more than anything, is how to move on…How to let them go….how to see the goodness of God in all of it. How can I stop trying to ‘control’ my life and realize that I can stop worrying and know that God has it all under control, so much better than I could even begin to imagine!

I’ve only made it through Chapter 5 yet, and this is very much a book that takes time to process, there’s no rushing it. I want to work through the rest of it, and yet it does hurt in the reading…that kind of hurt that you know is God at work, helping me to realize more what He wants for me.

If you are struggling with life, or have fears, may I suggest you try this book? It’s not an easy read. Do it when you have alone time, and keep your tissues handy. Cry out to God. Allow Him to be God, trust His goodness. I have not yet achieved, I am still striving…it is a difficult journey. And yet, I know it will be worth it all!

I’d like to share a few quotes:

“You cannot stop fear from coming, but it is your choice whether you are going to let it in.”

“You see, God is good and merciful, and we do not need a huge dose of faith to bring our fear to Him. We need only a tiny little bit.”

Lies about being in control…”If I can just put my household on a good schedule, keep the house perfectly spotless, and make only home-cooked meals, then I will be a good wife and mother.” (this is not me exactly, but just a bit too close for comfort!) she then goes on to say “It’s a lie. We know that it is, and that is why we fear so much. Deep down we know we are not in control, and we hate it. But the truth is that our “out of controlness” is really the greatest gift God could ever give to us. He is far better at being God than we are, but because He loves us so much, He meets us in our waywardness. He wants us to wrestle with Him. God wants us to bring to Him, full force, all that we want to have control over. He wants to hear our moans, our complaints, and our opinions, and in these meetings, He wants to show off His splendor.”

I think that one way to deal with fears is to face them head on and then relinquish them to God. Easy to say, not so easy to do! I think it will be a continual, lifelong process for me!

Maria Furlough is a top-notch writer. I have enjoyed getting to know her through this powerful book.

She opens with her heartbreaking story of learning that her baby boy would be born with a fatal birth defect. He would survive for only a short period, and her fears threatened to overtake her mind, heart, and soul when the diagnosis was delivered.

As a mother of three, I can only imagine the pain and suffering she went through. I had perfectly healthy pregnancies, but I was still plagued with worries of the unknown threats when my babies were in my womb. But Maria’s story transcends her pregnancy and the few precious hours with her baby Gideon. This book wields a powerful weapon against the deep-seated fears every one of us faces.

I think women are particularly prone to fear. I haven’t met a woman who didn’t struggle with it in one way or another. Fear is a powerful weapon the enemy uses to keep us in bondage.

Maria uses deep scriptural insight and poignant personal stories to show how God can set us free from our fears and offer real, lasting, breathing hope within them.

I’ve been a fearful person most of my life, and I’m always searching for books that can help me conquer my fearful tendencies. Without reservation, I can say this is the best book I’ve ever read about facing fears and winning the war against them.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from Breaking the Fear Cycle I just cannot get out of my head (in the best way):
- Every time I give in to a fearful thought, I am taking a bite from the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil all over again.
- Once we gaze upon our fears with honest indignation, we can see that, yes, God is bigger than even the worst thing we can imagine.
- Pain is actually doing something. It is not arbitrary, worthless, or endless. It’s doing a work in us that cannot be done any other way.
- Instead of living in perpetual fear of the pain and suffering that might happen, let’s live each day in freedom.
- May we figure out how to fight fear and walk the road toward peace hand in hand.

Thank you to Baker Books for a free preview copy of this wonderful book.

I am so grateful to Revell Books for the ability to participate in their Blogger Book Review program. They provide me with a list of books to choose from and I write an honest review of those books. Most of the time I can give a positive review. Unfortunately, I cannot do that with this book.
The author, Maria Furlough, speaks about fear from her personal experiences. She has evidently lived a life overwhelmed with the spirit of fear, a fear that grew from simple worry to outright panic. It was also compounded by the diagnosis of her unborn child with a syndrome that would cause his death within minutes or hours after his birth. I can’t imagine the pain she endured during her pregnancy and delivery, followed by his death.
But, I do know that her method of fighting fear is not workable for me. She searches countless scriptures about fear, which is fine by itself. But her battle tactic is to read the scriptures to herself and journal her fears in detail. I was taught to fight the devil and his minions with the Word of God directly. When Jesus was in the wilderness and Satan taunted him and tempted him Jesus set the example for how to fight the devil off. He spoke the Word of God back to him. An example is in Matthew 4.
In II Timothy 1:7 it says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Then, in James 4:7 it says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
I grew up with a mother who was the embodiment of the spirit of fear. If I had given voice to my fears through journaling and speaking about them I would have been overtaken by them. But by learning to rebuke the devil and the spirit of fear I have been able to overcome that fear. Does it still attempt to attack me? Yes, on occasion. But, then the Holy Spirit reminds me of the full Armor of God and how to fight the devil with the Sword of the Spirit.
If this battle tactic works for Mrs. Furlough then I pray she becomes adept at it. I would never tell someone to stop fighting in a way that helps them. I just know the more direct approach works for me.

"Once we gaze upon our fears with honest indignation, we can see that, yes, God is bigger than even the worst thing we can imagine." (47)

Be honest. The idea of fear kind of brings a bit of fear in itself. Don't you think? Or rather, worry. It brings a bit of anxiety that we don't want or need, yet that's the thing with worry and fear - sometimes you can't help it. Maybe you can, and that's what author Maria Furlough shared in Breaking the Fear Cycle.

With personal stories and thoughts, the author provided readers a step by step understanding and breakdown of how to find that peace we so sought. I love the chapter on pain, because it not is honest, but it gives us something to hold on to. There's a story behind each, and it's working in our hearts, our minds and maybe just so we can find that peace in the future.

"Pain is actually doing something. It is not arbitrary, worthless, or endless. It’s doing a work in us that cannot be done any other way." (69)

Either way, I think the author did a great job in connecting readers with herself, as well as guiding us towards the One who can provide the comfort and the peace in our hearts. With a message of trusting God, encouragement to seek and find peace through Him first, and in acts of kindness for others, and with honesty to self, Breaking the Fear Cycle is a devotional as well as a help guide. Great questions ends each section, and that's where the honesty comes in for each reader. Nothing to fear if you put your heart to it.

"Selflessness is a catalyst to peace, a nonstop trip, and it is a train worth boarding." (117)

Maria uses real life examples of how her faith and fear shape the book she pens here, Breaking the Fear Cycle. On our own steam it's not an easy thing to do at all. And she shows us that throughout her book. I think it's a wonderful tool to help, alongside God's word. With that being said I truly think she has a hit here.

Which if us truly believe we have our lives perfectly under control? The guy whose wife has cancer, your fear may be that she could go at any time, and if God took her home, would He still leave you alone? We're told in the Bible, God's word, He never leaves us, He never forsakes us. In my honest assessment of Maria's work and understanding how to apply scripture she does an amazing job. She shows us what she went through and how she used God's word to strengthen her and to uphold her faith.

Was it any easier for her to live her life in all of this? I doubt it, but she persisted along with God at her side. She took steps and shows us how we, too, can come through those fearful moments stronger and better - because God is on our side, He is for us. To be perfectly honest here, my life is never perfect or beautiful, to me it's always a constant mess, but if I stopped for one minute to allow fear rule me and my heart I think it would truthfully cripple me. I used to live my life that way and it serves no real purpose.

So, do I say, "Pick up this book and read it?" I do say that, yes, and at the same time I also say this as well: "Pick up the Bible, read along with her out of your personal Bible, and see how things fit into your life." What harm is there to combat fear and allow God to be present? I think there is none. So grab a copy, sit down and read it little by little or as much as you want. Go dis with you and desires you to live without fear in your life.

My Opinion~ Wow!!! There is so much power and impact in this tiny, little book. Personally, I don't struggle with fear that much, but I got a lot out of this book. The author is so personal in this book with her story, her failures, her victories, and everything in between. If you struggle with fear or anxiety this is the book for you. It shows you step by step ways to get rid of fear and give it to God. The author doesn't shy away from her own personal fears, and she actually tells us what they were. She actually went through this process. She actually did all this in order to get rid of fear. This isn't just some book that she wrote for no reason; she wrote this book to free people from the bondage that she once had. As a reader, it can be comforting to know that people actually have gone through what you're going through. It was actually refreshing to read a small book since I normally read bigger books. It also feels refreshing to give a book 5 stars!

I related to this book as soon as I read the title. The fear cycle, yes I know it well for many years. The picture pops in my head of a bicycle wheel going around and around. There are times that my fears would fade only to be brought back full force by thoughts or circumstances. I know from experience it is a vicious “cycle”.
I know God in His Word says “do not fear” but I have been caught in its endless circle.
Ms. Furlough’s book is light shining on this dark problem all believers face. She openly and honestly shares her journey in overcoming this debilitating stronghold Satan builds in our lives. The lessons she learned are the reader’s blessings. She asks questions I knew the answer to but was afraid (yes fear again) to face. The gentle way she nudged me into facing my fears, some I had not even named.
I like that she didn’t just talk about the problem but through scripture and reflection guided me with workable solutions defeat this foe in my life. She doesn’t sugar coat the fact that it will be a battle I have to fight with the Lord beside me, reminding me that my weapon is scripture. The 14 promises in scripture that God will protect me will be something I will use from now on.
Sharing her personal fears and struggles with them not only were uplifting but made me feel she truly understands! With God we have nothing fear and the old saying popped into my head, “we have nothing to fear but fear itself”. Yes! I want “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding” in Philippians 4:7
It is not a read it once book. You will want to read it, highlight in it, and make notes. I feel now I have a scriptural battle plan and the mindset truly have victory. It is going to be a process and a journey but so worth it!

In her new book, Breaking the Fear Cycle, Maria Furlough shares an intense, personal, glimpse of pain and grief. Her story of Gideon and the wrestling with God through that trial teaches us that we can find purpose in the pain. That nothing is ever wasted. God can and will redeem our pain for our good and His glory.

Maria takes us through the fear journey and helps us take those thoughts captive and work through them with Scripture as our guide. She reminds us of God’s promises and that we should not fear the pain, but press through it to see the bigger purpose - peace.

“Obtaining peace is not a blissful walk in the park; it is a hard-won battle, and peace is the prize.”

It’s hard work, but we can break the fear cycle with God at our side. It does not mean that there will not be grief or sadness, but rather, God - who is with you, comforting you as you walk that path with Him, will ease that pain.

In Chapter 8 of the book, Maria lays out God’s Promises of Protection. There are 14 promises backed by Scripture that not only give comfort as we confront our fears, but offer us a guide to proclaim God’s truths and soak in His goodness.

I wholeheartedly recommend Breaking the Fear Cycle to anyone looking to overcoming their fears. Pick up your Bible, pick up this book and absorb all the gems that God is whispering to you. There are questions at the end of each chapter that help guide you through each section. One of my favorite parts are the prayers at the end of each chapter as well. Maria’s words that pray over you as you face your fears. Prayers of encouragement and love.

No matter how many times we see the words "Fear not" in the Bible, those of us who fret over things will always find a reason to fear.  Because we just know. We.just.know.  We analyze every little thing, think about everything that can go wrong and convince ourselves that if it can go wrong, it will.

But God calls us to trust Him when things don't go according to our well-thought out plans. Even when bad things happen. Even when we can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Maria Furlough faced her greatest fear and every mother's nightmare. She lost a child.  Could she trust God for the good in her circumstances?  Could she even trust Him at all?  In "Breaking the Fear Cycle", Furlough shares her heart-breaking story and her testimony of how giving full control of our lives to God and trusting in His sovereignty can break the cycle of fear and help us trust Him with our lives no matter what.

If you are anxiety-ridden, this hands-on book will encourage you to lay all your worries at the feet of Jesus.  Our fear can activate our imagination and carry us to places God never intended for us to go. Furlough's wisdom and insight following her own journey through fear and anxiety help to alleviate these emotions in our life if we put our trust and faith in God.

Breaking the Fear Cycle by Maria Furlough is in many ways the best book I’ve read all year. The author begins the book with the heart wrenching story of the loss of their 4th child Gideon to Potter’s syndrome. She tells of the fears she faced head on and the way her fear took over and drove her to decisions she might not have otherwise made. She then tells of the ways the Lord intervened and had a greater plan for Gideon and her. This plan wasn’t an escape as quick as you can plan. It was a plan that would face the crippling fear holding hands with God and be forever changed because of it.

The book is FULL of scripture, prayer and heart probing questions. Each chapter is ended with a prayer and a list of questions for meditation and self reflection. The author encourages journaling and getting quiet with God to allow Him to show you your fears and the control they have over you. Through scripture examples and examples of her friends and acquaintances, the author illustrates her points and brings them to real life for the reader. She connects our fear with our misunderstanding God and who he is. She clearly combats that with guiding the reader to scripture to see who God is and why we can trust him with even our greatest fears.

I love the authors vulnerability. She instantly gains the trust of the reader when she says it like it is. I don’t see her as someone who is high and mighty and has it all together. Instead I can see myself in her. I can relate to her. I have an increased bravery to face my own fears because of the way she faced hers. Don’t miss out on this book! It doesn’t disappoint.

Author Maria Furlough is a companion in the rawness of pain, the relevance of loss and the reality of fear. She knows her stuff because she has lived it; she writes with honesty and compassion. In Breaking the Fear Cycle, Maria gives voice to truth: "We are not meant to muscle through our fear on our own. Because we are weak, we are not able to conquer it, beat it, and get rid of it. We are not yet home in heaven; suffering will be a part of these days." And she gives voice to wisdom, gained only through sitting in God's Word and wrestling with His promises while carrying Baby Gideon: "Some crying feels like it will last forever. Many mornings I soaked my pillow all the way through. ... When we cry alongside Jesus, he whispers gently that he loves us and will bring us safely to a place of joy again ... through Christ in us and the hope that comes with him, God promises to protect us from endless, permanent crying." This book combines Maria's personal story and valuable scripture verses that remind the reader of God's provision, protection and power against darkness. TIP: Be sure to highlight the practical tools and underline the soul-soothing sentences — this is a resource to return to time and again, as well as a blanket of peace with which to rest.

(I am a mama, as well as an author, who has held two full-term dead infants in her arms. I soak up Maria's insight and am proud to recommend this book. I received a copy from her, but this is my own personal opinion. No review was required.)

Fear is a constant struggle for me.

I fear:

That one day my husband will leave me.
That I'll one day lose my job.
That everything will be taken away from me.
That my past screw ups are the reason for my present struggles.
I fear almost everything. I'm anxious all the time and those anxious times cause some pretty big meltdowns even though I'm 31 years old.

The Bible calls us to fear not. It's probably one of the most said phrases in Bible. Maria Furlough tackles how to overcome fear for good. It's a process but she takes you through the steps. She uses her own experience of losing a child and her own journey through her fears.

This book is just great. You can really dive into it and look at your own fears. Even though I have a long way to go. I think that this book is a great stepping stone that I can really start to give my fears to God and walk with God through my own fears. I'm glad that this book dropped into my lap. It is a good reminder in this fearful world that there is something that can come out of the end of the tunnel. The discussion questions are great at the end of each chapter. You can really dive in and work out your fears. Everyone struggles and I think that it is okay to have a little fear but you can't let it consume your life.

I really want to get a group together now to go through this book as a Bible study.

Thank you so much to Revell and Baker publishing group for sending me this book in return for my honest opinion.

4 out of 5 stars.

This book was so appropriate for me. I have been a fearful person all my life and this is one of the best books for combating that fear that I've ever read.

Maria knows something about fear. One of her worst fears (and I think every Mom's fear) was losing a child. This happened when she is carrying her precious child, Gideon, she finds out that he will be born without lungs, kidney or bladder and would only live a few hours after his birth. She has to face the fear, but shows us how she did just this, with the help of God.

She shares stories of others who were fearful in the Bible, like David and Job, and how they were able to face their fears because of their faith in God. We, too, can have this same kind of faith.

One of my favorite things is that at the end of each chapter, she has a series of questions for us to answer. This helped me to truly reflect on my feelings of fear and then combat those fears by going to God's Word. Because of these wonderful questions, this book would make a great book for a small group.

I loved Maria's style of writing because she helps us to truly understand God's promises of giving us strength and faith so we can rise above the fears we feel. She was so open and honest in this book and I enjoyed each and every page. I highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with fears because it will truly help you overcome. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

"Breaking the Fear Cycle" looks at the core lies that we believe that create fear and how to use the truth to break the cycle of fear. The author told parts of her story to illustrate through her experiences the points that she's making. She learned months before her due date that her baby would die at birth. She also had a chapter of testimonies from people about how they broke the cycle of fear (following advice found in this book).

She started by having you name your fears and realize that you have a choice in how you deal with them. She mainly talked about fear of what might happen, and one of her steps is to recognize what really is true about that moment versus the scenarios that you have come up with about what could happen or could have happened. She looked at what the Bible says about suffering and has you focus on God, His promises, and prayer. I have read several books about dealing with fear, and this is the only one I would highly recommend to anyone. It leaves you feeling free.

I received an ebook review copy of this book the publisher through NetGalley.

The best part of this book is the fact that it’s written as if Maria were talking to you, her friend. Breaking the fear cycle is not only a book that helps to give a framework for facing fear but also a guide on how to live by fighting fear. Maria has touched my life with her story and her walk with God. Her honesty and ability to be so vulnerable make this book all the more relatable. We all struggle with fear on an hourly, daily, and weekly basis. Maria’s book is a great reminder that fear is a liar and that God’s promises are true. This book will help breathe life into the dark places that none of us want to admit we have, but if we are honest with ourselves and with God than these dark places are filled with light and darkness cannot hide any longer. Maria’s story is one of strength and love and how God can take the most fearfully broken situations and turn them into healing beyond all measure.

This is a great quick read about finding peace in the midst of anxiety. This is an especially helpful and positive book for the fearful times that everyone is dealing with in our world today. Maria Furlough shares her own experiences with fear as she dealt with the death of her newborn son. Maria helps her readers to know that they are not alone and she shares her personal struggles in order to help others. This book is Biblically based with Scripture references and reflection questions at the end of each chapter. The chapter that I loved the most was Chapter 8: God's Promises of Protection. This chapter is something that I feel like I should read everyday. Maria's words are so refreshing and truly sent by God. Her book makes me feel hopeful that I can find peace daily in God's Word. I also really like the cover art of this book and think that it would make an excellent gift. Thank you so much to Maria and Revell for the chance to read and review this wonderful book!

I have struggled with fear the majority of my life and have read many books on the subject of fear and leaving it behind. Something that clicked with me through Maria's story, is that fear does not stop. Those anxieties and immobilizing fears are not going to vanish, they will pop up in our life but, they can be combated. Maria's story and lessons learned, show that peace and freedom is a fight, it is not something we can will to happen, but it is God's will for us to live in that place. This book is worth picking up, because while others can feel like self-help this one feels more like a humble conversation over coffee. This story is eye opening and beautiful, I should know because I have read many many books on this topic. Trust me, you will not regret this one or walk away feeling deflated or hopeless when it comes to the fears in your life. Thank you Maria for your words!

This unabashedly Christian book was a game changer for me as a person who has spent her entire life dealing with fears and anxiety. It challenged me to really examine my faith and whether or not I believe God is who He says He is. And, if I believe God is who He says, then why am I still living in fear and not trusting in Him? So many times, I had to put the book down because the conviction was painful, yet true. I can honestly say that my faith has grown through reading this book, and there are scripture verses that have a new truth and meaning to me. Ms. Furlough, through her story, has created a safe atmosphere to learn to love God more deeply, believe in Him at a deeper level as He asks from us, and to begin living a life that is filled with peace and contentment instead of fear. I'm truly grateful for this book!

Furlough starts out by asking the reader to identify their greatest, deepest fear. The fear you obsess over. The author is very upfront about her answer, and she shares numerous stories which will likely be relatable to many readers. She presents a battle plan to activate when the fear train comes rolling in, threatening to steal your peace and joy.

Short chapters make this a quick read, yet there is a lot of information I’ll likely go back to as needed. Furlough challenges the reader to lean into God and release the fears plaguing them. She offers advice on overcoming anxiety. She provides numerous reminders of God’s promises, and Bible verses are referenced throughout the book. Each chapter ends with reflection questions, which could be combined with journaling and prayer. There’s a leader’s guide at the end, as well as an appendix of important Bible verses to use in breaking the fear cycle in your life.

Some of my favorite quotes:

• “Many times I think that fears speak loudest in the silence. I think we are afraid to sit and listen because we fear what we are going to hear.”
• “When we sit in the quiet, all the what-ifs tend to come.”
• “Any sense of control we have is an illusion.”
• "Once we gaze upon our fears with honest indignation, we can see that, yes, God is bigger than even the worst thing we can imagine."
• "Selflessness is a catalyst to peace, a nonstop trip, and it is a train worth boarding."

Fear causes us to look at life situations in unique ways. There is cautious fear and also, fear so strong that you can't move. In this amazing book, the author shares her own life experiences of fear and how she has learned to lean on God in all situations. Fear can arise at any time. The way we deal with fear can affect our daily living. Prayer and looking to God for help will guide us along the way. Scripture and personal examples and the stories of others who have battled fear are included. This is a great resource for all who are experiencing fear. I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my own personal honest opinion. No review was required.

Embracing this hands-on journey, I learned the importance of taking a deep breath, the exploring effective ways to release anxious feelings by studying scripture to successfully rediscover peace, growing from fear to freedom. Fear does have a natural protective significance in our existence, however, breaking the fear cycle releases fear as a disadvantageous factor for success.

Peace is within our reach as Furlough shares in Breaking the Fear Cycle. Created with an open-ended chapter awaiting The Story of You, the message of Breaking the Fear Cycle is a breath of fresh air encouraging you to become brave enough to breathe.

Got fear? Get peace!
Maria Furlough's book, Breaking the Fear Cycle, is packed with applicable Biblical truths of how God used her greatest fear to deliver her from living life with an anxious heart to finding peace by trusting God's promises. I recommend that you take your time to truly soak in the promises of God that she shares in her book. Most of all, don't let fear keep you from digging deep into your soul to find answers to the reflection questions at the end of each chapter. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead you to truth and like Maria and now myself, deliver you from the terrifying grip of fear into the gentle embrace of peace in Jesus!

Breaking the Fear Cycle: How to Find Peace for Your Anxious Heart is an inspirational book by Maria Furlough that emphasizes putting our hope and trust in the Lord. Topics covered in the book include fear, confidence, prayer, protection, suffering, and peace.

I like Furlough’s warm writing style. She writes in an encouraging manner, helping readers confront their fears head-on. The book acknowledges that everyone has fears, but that God can guide us through these fears. We may live in a frightening world, but we can have a close relationship with our ever-loving God.

I received this book for review.

The endorsements describe this book as gentle and personal, and I would agree with that. Although I thought it might be helpful, the idea of reading a book on fear did make me a little nervous. Would it be too confronting? Would it shame me? But it did neither of those things.

This book aims to help you cope with persistent anxious thoughts. Chapters 3, 7 and 10 were my personal favourites. I think the part I'm going to remember most is: "Stay in today." I do sometimes go down the path of worrying about my future, but Maria encourages me to hold onto what's true here and now. I think this book is definitely worth a read if you struggle with fear and anxiety.
