kind of like indiana jones meets lord of the rings, you play a paladin-like warrior chasing after a former friend to stop them getting the world ending something. Very few real options, though the storyline is rather rich and the amazonesque setting works well enough

I used to love the Golden Dragon gamebooks when I were a lad. I spent a small fortune getting hold of a few of them in the 1980s. Being a bit shorter in length than Fighting Fantasy, it didn’t take much more than an hour to whizz through each one. Whilst this was ideal for the slightly younger, as the books were so well written, they continued to appeal into my teens and the series survived the many book purges I’ve had over the years. They still appeal now in fact, some 40 odd years later.

The Temple of Flame is up there with the rest of the series, this time with an ancient South American twang to the adventure. I can’t comment on how balanced the game/dice roll elements stand up as I didn’t bother this time around, but I remember liking its simplicity. The writing has stood the test of time. I’d strongly recommend the author’s Bloodsword and Critical IF (formerly Virtual Reality) series. I must also finally get around to reading the same author’s Fabled Lands and Vulcanverse series.
