The book started by introducing Kitty Kat and her tour of Rome. First it was mentioned how old Rome is and that you see ruins and old buildings everywhere you go. The tour started with gladiators fought in the Colosseum which is a major landmark of Rome and there were chariot races at the circus. There were many rulers of Rome that had been there a long time ago and speeches were made when battles were won. The kingdom of Italy was started with Il Vittoriano and then the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps that were names after an embassy long ago. The Pantheon Temple was next with a hole in the dome and yet another Piazza and fountain. The apartments of the many popes are now looked at like they are a castle, and the Vatican museum and Sistine chapel that contain scenes from the Bible that left Kitty Kat with so much to look at that her head was reeling. There was the crowds of people waiting for the Pope to make an appearance and by the end of the trip Kitty Kat was able to look back and see how much she saw in just a short trip. The main theme of the book was to introduce the reader to each historical place in Rome and encourage interest in travel and learning about other places in the world.
The book ends have a cartoon map of Rome which is cool to be able to look at and reference all of the places mentioned. The illustrations in this book are really well done and mirror the actual places in Rome well. This gives the reader the ability to be transported to Italy while reading the book and visually be able to see Rome. The pictures were all cartoon but with enough detail that you could tell what it was and follow along with the pictures. I liked how there was a little background and detail with each page and location that was talked about. It wasn’t too much information however, to bore young kids and be too much to read. I liked that it was from the point of view of Kitty Kat because that made the story more interesting to follow and more fun. I would recommend this book to kids of any age and with interest in travel or wanting to learn more about the other side of the world.
