Norman Cornthwaite Nicholson OBE, was an English poet associated with the Cumbrian town of Millom. His poetry is noted for its local concerns, straightforward language, and elements of common speech. Although it is poetry for which he is chiefly known, he wrote many works in other forms: novels, plays, essays, topography and criticism.
I picked this up from my local library which was selling off some books, not having heard of Norman Nicholson before. I really enjoyed it. Apparently, he'd been compared to Wordsworth and you can see how Seamus Heaney was a fan with his use of word clusters, or whatever they might be called. Very readable and I would like to read other volumes by him. 'Nicholson, Suddenly' recommended as a poem to check out as a taster.
This was the last read for my book bingo this year. Of course...I left it until the last minute, but that actually ended up being a good thing - it was an incredible experience to spend an evening just reading poem after poem. I feel like I got much more out of it than by reading one every now and then through the year.
I’m so pleased to have discovered Norman Nicholson’s poetry. This is an excellent selection of poems, nearly all of them strongly rooted in the geography and history of his part of Cumbria. Highly recommended!
