What happened to the lost colony of Roanoke?
In 1586 America, English colonists, trying to eke out a new life, welcome into their midst a young woman and her dog--victims of a ship wreck. But Petra and Kipp are not what they seem.
A pair of time traveling historians, symbionts Petra and Kipp have arrived to unravel the mystery behind an enigmatic coastal colony near Roanoke. As they become involved with the colonists, their fact finding mission spins dangerously out of control when they discover a deranged killer living among the colonists.
"Being a lover of all things canine, the symbiotic relationship between canine and human is immensely appealing." - Lee, verified reviewer

About the author: T. L. B. Wood’s appreciation of literature began at an early age, encouraged by her mother who was an English teacher. T. L. and her husband enjoy a love of nature and have shared their home with a memorable succession of beloved canine companions. A cat or two is usually in search of a sunny spot for a nap or a high window sill from which to watch the world go by. When not caring for her animal family, T. L. can be found at her desk, writing, or taking long walks as she envisions new stories to be told. Her novels include The Symbiont, The Last Child of Tole, The Ambassador From Tole, In the Eye of Hugo, The Way of Telitha, Tombstone, 1881—A Symbiont Adventure, The Eagles of Arundell and Whitechapel, 1888---A Symbiont Adventure. Her latest novel is the fourth in the Symbiont series, The Great Locomotive Chase, 1862.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. I wasn't sure what to think when I first started reading this book. But it slowly grabs you and pulls you in. The book starts out with Kipp losing his mother. Then it switches to Petra, who is a symbiont and a historian. She has traveled back in to the time of the cave men along with her lupine companion who is killed protecting Petra. Petra cannot get back to her time, so she makes the best of being helpful to the cave dwellers. After a natural disaster, she is left alone. Kipp comes upon her and they recognize each other for what they truly are. Together they get home. Kipp is introduced to other Symbionts as well as modern conveniences, such as riding in a car, and going through the fast food lane. Kipp takes it upon himself to "mother" a little kitten he finds. Soon Lily is becoming a part of their daily lives. After recuperating from the travel to the prehistoric time period, Petra and Kipp prepare for their next time traveling adventure. An early English settlement near the Roanoke area.
For some reason the Symbionts think it's their job to make sure humans survive. How? That isn't fully explained, but there are Symbionts who don't hold to that ideal. So when it comes to time travelling, the Symbiont is walking a fine line. They have to be careful of what they say and do so as not to affect the timeline in any negative way. Also, if one of the bonded Symbionts is killed there is no way for the other to return home.
The author did a wonderful job in her descriptions of living in prehistoric times and with the early English settlement. I look forward to reading the next book in the series!

I didn't know what to expect from this book as it is the first T.L.B. Wood story that I have read, I have to say that it was thought provoking and set in a way that has you drawn in
This book was given to Marjorie Mindel on instaFreebie. What a treat it was to read the Symbiont (A Time Travel Fantasy) It starts in our planet's prehistoric past, moves to the present day, and back to one of the missing colonies near Roanoke, N.C., the Land's Point Colony. They barely manage to return to the present day, but determined to keep time traveling. This story touches on the deep anguish of loved ones lost, of the union of two souls joined between two seeming species, to become as one sentient being. We see personal loss, loyalty, love and self-sacrifice for one's loved ones. The Symbiont is a true love story, but not the traditional kind between two humans. It seems that canines have always truly been the better half of humans. This is a wonderful read that makes one evaluate one's priorities in life, a provoking, but satisfying read.
A fantastic story of love, friendship upon the time. The story is set in a community of symbiotic ("human beings" and "canine beings") with unimaginable powers / abilities. The main characters, Petra and Kipp, are able to travel through time and an ever-changing world and new mysteries it appears to him in front of them. It is a book suitable for all that involves you to the last page. I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review
I received a copy from eBooks Discovery and I'm willingly leaving a review In just the first few pages, I thought Petra a bit selfish. She wakes up Phyllo but don't explain to Kipp because she wants to sleep; you need to know that they share absolutely everything and this is unheard of. The font in this one is irritating; the word "symbiont (s) is italicized all through this book. All the books in the series are about them so there is no need for the font change. Petra barely talks about her lost baby George, and never about her husband; it's like she never grieved him or something. No fond memories, no lingering scent around the house. Nothing. It was really weird. It starts with both Petra and Kipp being alone in their world, finally meeting and bonding. Then you get a bit day-to-day business stuff, time-travelling, violence, and reminiscence of their voyage. It's a good story, you don't completely understand what is going on but you know the pair has a special bond, unlike the other pairs of symbionts, and the time travelling is exciting as well as dangerous. I'm still not sure why they are doing this. Editing needs another pass: In the bedroom, she has shutters, blinds, and then they are drapes.
A time traveler Petra is stuck in the past after her symbiont companion is killed saving her life. For a time she lives among the natives of that time until a natural disaster changes the climate. Soon the natives move on and she is left alone or so she thinks. Instead she meets another symbiont Kipp native to the time period and much more advanced than those of their kind from the future. They forge a bond and together return to the future. There is much surprise as to Kipp’s unusual nature and a ton of bureaucracy as to what will become of him he decides to stay with Petra. The two are given an assignment to explore the Lost Colony of Roanoke. Or rather the colony that was established in between the two Roanoke expeditions. Drags a little in the middle with sometimes repetitive details of preparations for their first planned time jump together. However it picks up quickly once the actual trip has begun. I enjoyed the glimpse into Colonial times and what the first settlers had to overcome to thrive. All in all a fascinating read. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. Sorry, but despite a relatively entertaining story concept, I was not impressed with how it was carried out. The language seemed a little high-minded, particularly the use of the word "disapprobation", which appeared no less than six times, in 220 pages. Being aimed at young adults I probably would have gone with disapproval, with which they would certainly be familiar. Perhaps it was on a "Word-of-the-day" calendar, while the book was being written. I was also curious as to how, and when, the "symbiont race" was started. I just found too many irritating glitches, and I'm one who's more than willing to suspend belief, when the book is well-written. This is a series, with at least seven total volumes. Based on this one, and the tease of the second, at the end of this book, I won't be investing either time, or money, on any more.
I really enjoyed the twist of needing the humanoid-lupine pair of symbionts to be able to time travel. I found the story very interesting and I loved the characters. I thought the world-building was well done, as well. The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is that I agree with other reviewers who mentioned a need for better editing - there were times when I was pulled out of the story by distraction due to typos which I believe could have been prevented with better editing and/or proofreading.
Young adult fiction is an easy fun escape if you like time travel and historical fiction. This and the series would be a good way to introduce high school students to history in a fun way. Good research but enough fun & interesting characters for this adult to relax during the end of a challenging school year and enjoy a quick read without having to solve any problems!
Ever wondered what your life would be like if you lived in a different time? Take a look through the eyes of Petra and Kipp as they travel through time to an early settlement of America. You will be captivated as you travel along as they adapt and learn to live in another time. The dangers of the unknown. Will they be found out as the symbionts they are, is their newly formed bond strong enough to protect each other as they search for answers about early Roanoke and it’s disappearing settlers? Absolutely absorbing! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

As the kick off to the Symbiont Time Travel Adventure Series, the Symbiont is quite good - assuming you intend to read the entire series. The book is not what I would consider a stand alone book. It strictly provides the background to the series meaning you will more than likely be left with a lot of questions once you complete the book ... which usually leaves me feeling a bit disappointed or cheated as the story doesn't seem to have resolution. Judging from this book I believe this series will be enjoyable.
Imagine having the gift to be able to travel back in time to answer any questions or solve what actually happened to a person. In this first book of the series we meet Petra, a human symbiont, when she is stuck in the ancient past as her canine symbiont companion Tula was killed. Kipp finds her and learns how their special relationship means they can travel time. A later travel leads to finding out what happened to one of the early colonies.
