The last of her kind, a newly born butterfly meets and befriends many other creatures in the Australian forest, and when it is time for her to go - the Voice of the Forest ensures her living among them always by turning her into a butterfly orchid.
At first I thought it was going to have a heavy environmental message, like anti-logging or such. Unfortunately for me it turned into a more metaphysical or pourquoi fable... but that is likely to please other readers. The illustrations are wonderful though and get a star of their own, and with the half star of being able to read an Australian picture-book here in America's heartland, the book earns a solid four from me.
Recommended to families studying Australia. I will be putting the lovely hardcover that I rec'd from paperback swap right back up there.
A beautiful story. Not just lovely illustrations, but a more holistic view of nature and conservation, bringing the underlying instinct and voice of nature into the tale, a reminder to listen to the still quiet voice.
