I’m a big fan of Sherlock Holmes and last year, I read a collection of essays about things in Victorian England, especially things that we read in the world of Sherlock Holmes. When I read those essays, I realized that I haven’t really read any Sherlock Holmes related stuff. I do watch the films and TV shows adaptations but they’re different things. That’s why I was glad when I was asked to be a part of this blog tour.

As stated, this collection offers five stories, each featuring different crimes and each, of course, an adventure. The stories are told in Dr. Watson’s POV and still, I think his character needed some depth and so does Sherlock’s. That said, I believe the stories are written with a targeted audience already familiar with the personalities, or rather the depth of the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. It’s because if the reader solely relies on these stories to get Sherlock and Dr. Watson’s characters, then you’ll be disappointed. I mean this is a retelling or adaptation, so the author wrote these stories knowing the reader is already familiar with his characters.

Even though I enjoyed reading the stories, I encourage everyone to not expect them to be perfect. The stories are all intriguing, some more than the others but they’re not perfect. I even think the solutions to their predicaments are rather easy. And if you’re too familiar with Sherlock Holmes, especially have seen the numerous adaptations, you might guess the outcomes. But still, I found them intriguing. My favorite is the third story. The one with the train that arrives three years late. That’s really well done and kept me glued to the page.

Overall, I enjoyed this collection and I think they are perfect reads to pass one’s time. No one beats short crime mysteries to pass a lazy afternoon like the one I’m having right now. I read this on the first day of the lockdown of one of the cities in the Philippines because of COVID-19. It’s a lazy day and my anxiety is trying to take over and this book definitely helped me calm and divert my attention from the crisis our world is having.

This is a collection of five new stories featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson.

I am a big fan of Conan-Doyle’s Creation and found these stories by Maurice Barkley capture the essence of the Sherlock Holmes original tales.

The atmosphere and characters are truly spot on and the tales of mystery are well plotted and engaging. They also have some unique and refreshing tweaks too, all of which make this collection thoroughly entertaining.

Thank you to The Write Reads for the opportunity to take part in this blog tour, for the promotional material and a free copy of the ebook. This is my honest and unbiased review.

I love all things Sherlock. I've watched the series and films, listened to the audiobooks and been to a Sherlock Holmes themed escape room. I'm even wearing my 'I am SherLocked' t-shirt as I write this! Of course I was very excited find out there were some new stories. This new book is made up of Watson's accounts of five separate cases, testing Sherlock Holmes' famous talents of deduction and problem solving:
The Holborn Toy Shop - The two investigate a case of missing children.
The Legacy of Doctor Carus - They deal with some horrible siblings and an inheritance puzzle.
The Train from Plymouth - A train arrives three years late with no one aboard.
The Whitehall Papers - A convict escapes jail without a trace.
The Grosvenor Square Furniture Van - A murder victim is found next to an abandoned furniture van with no clues around.
I found that the books managed to capture the feel of the originals wonderfully. I enjoyed reading them and getting back into the enigmatic world of Sherlock Holmes. One line in particular really made me laugh:
"Good God, Holmes," Lestrade erupted, "sixty thousand pounds, you could buy half of Plymouth for that."
If only they could see how little that money would buy you now!

If you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes, then you need to pay attention! While we do not have Sir Arthur Conan Doyle any longer, there are many who have undertaken to write and maintain the character of Sherlock.

Now if you are anything like me, you have gobbled up the BBC series on Sherlock (and have probably watched them multiple times). But a new Sherlock Holmes book hit the scene, and this is one that you are going to want to read! Get ready to fall in love with Sherlock all over again!

My Review of Five Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

The five stories that were included in this book were in short - awesome. I enjoyed the stories immensely. As I was able to engage and felt as though I was reading through an actual Conan Doyle book. I have to admit that I was not sure what to think - so many people have tried to write Sherlock and have failed - so I was a bit tepid about jumping in. However, the book met and exceeded all my expectations.

Each of the stories included were well done, and they fully flesh out the characters, without giving to much of the who dun it away. Here are the premises of the stories - as stated on goodreads.com:

1-Extreme danger. Children's lives are at risk.
2-Holmes prevents an injustice and triumphs over a greedy family.
3-A train arrives 3 years late. Only Holmes can solve this one.
4-Holmes battles blundering politicians and a master criminal.
5-An elaborate crime with a strange motive.

You are going to want to grab this book and read it! It only took me about an hour to read through, but it could have been longer and I would not have minded. This is a perfect time to be reading and staying away from people, so grab and read!

Book source ~ Tour

Within these pages are five stories told by Dr. Watson about his pal Sherlock Holmes. Five short stories about small jobs that Holmes (and he) have solved. The writing does a wonderful job of pulling me into not just each story but that particular time. I have not read all there is to read about Holmes and I haven’t seen more than a couple tv shows/movies, so I am no expert on the subject. All I know is I love this collection of tales detailing jobs of no big consequence to Holmes, but extremely important in the grand scheme of his work. No job too big or small as long as it piques his interest. These are right up his, and my, alley.

A great collection of short stories. I am a bit late with my review (part of a blog tour) but I really loved these. The Holborn Toy Shop was probably my favorite, but also the Legacy of Dr Carus was excellent.
The author captures the voice of Conan Doyle better than almost any other imitator I have read. My only gripe is that the collection is too short!

Never Enough Books Logo

I have said it once and I will say it again, I am a fan of Sherlock Holmes. So when I am offered the opportunity to read new stories featuring the great detective, I eagerly agree.

5 Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Maurice Barkley is one such collection. Originally published separately, this is the first time the stories have been combined in one compendium.

Personally, I greatly enjoyed reading these stories. Barkley has done a very good job in capturing the ‘voice’ of the original tales. His writing is very much like Conan Doyle’s as is his portrayal of both Watson and Holmes. This is especially true in the second story – The Legacy of Doctor Carus – where Barkley not only shows Holmes’ serious side but also his more mischievous side, something that is not often seen even in the original tales.

As these are all short stories, every one is a quick and delightful read. It would be quite easy to finish the whole book in an afternoon though I do recommend the reader take it slowly and see if they can figure out whodunnit before Holmes and Watson can.

For fans of the great detective (like myself) I urge them to give these stories a try.

I'm going to hang my head in shame and admit that I have still to read any of the original Sherlock Holmes novels.  I've seen and adored the TV series with Benedict Cumberbatch and I bought the audio to listen to but I just have never managed to fit them in.  After devouring Maurice Barkley's Sherlock adventures they have just moved to a much higher slot on my pile.

Now the other little birdies on this tour have mentioned many times that reading Barkley's writing is just like reading a Conan-Doyle novel and I'm going to fully take them at their word.

For me, I was completely transported into the world of Holmes and Watson by the description of life in this era.  Hansoms, old London accents and the way of life is just depicted in such a vivid and three dimensional way that it's easy to be completely sucked in.

Each story is short to read but packed full of sleuthing.  The characters of Watson and Holmes are portrayed exactly as I imagined them.  Holmes the quirky genius with a brilliant mind and Watson, ever observant and often the more creative when filling in the gaps.  I adored their relationship.

Overall I loved these stories and it's very clear and obvious that Barkley is a real fan.  Great care has been taken to preserve the essence of Conan-Doyle's work and his voice as a writer whilst adding to the collection.

I always find it interesting when an author takes on literary legend and one of my favourite fictional detectives, Sherlock Holmes.

This book contains five stories; The Holborn Toy Shop, The Legacy of Doctor Carus, The Train From Plymouth, The Whitehall Papers and The Grosvenor Square Furniture Van.

Each story stays true to the original Sherlock Holmes stories in setting and pace but Maurice Barkley still manages to stamp his own unique take on both Sherlock and Dr Watson.

There are of course cameos from Inspector Lestrade, Mrs Hudson, Wiggins and the irregulars and even Sherlock’s brother Mycroft.

The Legacy of Doctor Carus and The Train from Plymouth were my favourites as they felt the most like the original stories while also being fascinating mysteries too!

I did feel a couple of the stories weren’t quite as strong, mystery wise, as the other but of course that’s just my opinion.

5 adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a quick and engaging read that is a nice nod to the original stories.

I really enjoyed reading these stories, I was immersed from page one and found myself wondering time and time again if this wasn't a story collection by Arthur Conan Doyle that had been lost and only just published.
Maurice Barkley's writing style is perfect for the era in which these stories are set and it truly felt like I had travelled back in time and was walking side by side with the great Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson.
The different stories were very unique and very Sherlock, I enjoyed every minute of my reading experience. I would highly recommend for any Sherlock fans or people looking for a good whodunnit.

Very Good

The first story had me totally hooked. I loved it! It truly felt like reading one of the original canon stories. The second story was hilarious. The last three were underwhelming as far as story goes, but so were several of the canon books. Not every mystery will be dramatic. The characters were still fun.
This book is definitely worth it for any Holmes fan!

Fun to read these and try to match wits with S Holmes, and Dr Watson- but as usual Dr Watson and I have about the same abilities when it comes to outwitting and guessing who done it, compared the SH.
