Longing for freedom outside of her enclosed hutch, Millie, a lop-eared bunny, unexpectedly gets her wish, but encounters hungry predators and fierce, wild rabbits that make her choose between freedom and safety.
I think this was the first book I ever owned myself — not that my home didn't have books when I was a kid, I just didn't feel like they were my own personal books. My third grade teacher, knowing about my love for rabbits, gifted me this book one day, which was a special moment for me as a child; I now had a book to call my own, and one about rabbits, no less! I read this book many times as a kid and thought it was a touching story about branching out and taking big steps forward in life, even if it seems scary.
The eponymous brave bunny, named Millie, was confined to a crowded hutch along with her large family. Being the dreamer of her family, she longed to explore the world beyond the confines of her cage. One day, she managed to escape, thus beginning her journey into the great unknown. Along the way she befriends a fellow rabbit, one raised in the wild his whole life, and together they braved the outdoors and all its beauty and wonder.
I love this story, but something always bothered me about it. When Millie left her family, she was saddened to leave them behind in order to pursue her dreams, but she never makes an attempt to return to them. She neither returns to show them she is healthy and happy living her new life, nor does she go back to potentially break them out and show them that life outside their hutch isn't as bad as they once thought. I felt bad that they were left behind when Millie got to live a happy and free life. Her family must have been so worried that she never came back to them, probably fearing the worst had happened to her, thus reaffirming their fears of the outside world and further confining them to a limited and secluded life. I guess the moral of the story is that sometimes people will be left behind in your pursuit of greater things, but this is a story for little kids, and I wanted it to end on a happier note with her family by her side, or at the very least seeing her family accept her choice but choosing to remain behind of their own volition...but now I am thinking too deeply into a children's book!
The Brave Little Bunny is a nice children's book that shows the rewards of chasing your hopes and dreams. It was my first book that I ever owned and it still sits on my personal bookshelf to this day.
