Midnight Burning

Solina Mundy lives a quiet life, running the family bakery in her small North Carolina hometown. But one night, she suffers a vivid nightmare in which a wolfish beast is devouring her twin brother, who lives in Alaska. The next morning, police notify her that Mani is dead. Driven to learn the truth, Solina heads for the Land of the Midnight Sun. Once there, she begins to suspect Mani’s friends know more about his death than they’ve let on. Skyla, an ex-Marine, is the only one willing to help her.

As Solina and Skyla delve into the mystery surrounding Mani’s death, Solina is stunned to learn that her own life is tied to Mani’s friends, his death, and the fate of the entire world. If she can’t learn to control her newfound gifts and keep her friends safe, a long-lost dominion over mortals will rise again, and everything she knows will fall into darkness.

Arctic Dawn

Alone and exhausted after her month-long sojourn as a shooting star, Solina Mundy flees to southern California to lie low, recuperate, and plot a survival strategy. The one person she trusts to watch her back is her best friend, Skyla Ramirez. But Skyla has been missing for weeks. The arrival of a dangerous stranger and the discovery of a legendary weapon of mass destruction force Solina out of hiding and back into the fight for her life.

Solina knows she won’t last long on her own. She must find out what happened to Skyla and unite her contentious allies if she hopes to track down this devastating weapon before her enemies use it to burn the world to ash.

Molten Dusk

While recovering from a devastating betrayal, Solina becomes increasingly drawn to Thorin as he helps her hunt down Skoll, the mythical wolf who vowed to kill her. If she can find and destroy the beast, she’ll bring a swift and brutal end to her enemies’ schemes. But nothing ever goes as planned in Solina’s strange new world.

During her search for Skoll, Solina uncovers a plot to unleash a battalion of legendary soldiers and launch an apocalyptic war. Before she and her allies can locate the fabled army, several ghosts from her past return to haunt her. Solina must fight for life and the fate of the world, or her hopes for love and a peaceful future will go up in flames.

This is a must read for every fan of Norse mythology fan. Even if you have not read or seen much Norse mythology you will love these books. This urban fantast trilogy is the perfect mix of modern world with accident gods roaming this world among us.

Follow Solina as she discovers she is part of a world she never thought was real and as she learns so much she never even thought of. She uncovers secrets she was never meant to know, which puts her in danger and on the run. During her journey she meets some new people but quickly learns that she can’t trust everybody and people will betray her to stop her from finding out too much.

All three books are jammed packed with action, laughter, sass and just the right amount of romance and they will keep you on the edge of your seat with some pretty big and awesome plot twists.

Overall, I highly enjoyed all three books and can only recommend them. I rate it 4 ½-5 ★

Midnight Burning – 4.5
This story was told from Solina's point of view so we know as much as she does, which is nothing, other than her brother seems to have been killed by a wolf. There are so many questions that arise that remain unanswered until close to the end, which leaves you with a cliffhanger. The build-up to that cliffhanger was brilliantly written. Even with all the unanswered questions I felt like I really knew each character, choices they would make and how they would react. Ms. Laurel did an excellent job turning this centuries old myth into a present day possibility.

The characters are awesome, you have the simple Solina, the tomboy Skyla, the brooding Thorin, and the laid back comedian Val. I loved getting to know each and every one of them. Solina is the perfect daughter, doesn't rock the boat in any way but on this journey she starts to overcome her fears and learn to live. Skyla is the perfect friend, she comforts yet doesn't let Solina wallow for too long. Thorin, well he seems to love control but doesn't seem to like to communicate which was a total piss me off. And Val seems to just want to get laid lol. It's more than that but I don't want to give anything away.

Artic Dawn – 4
Wow, talk about some major twists and turns. I was not expecting the betrayal of a certain someone, that totally shocked me. And now I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. The relationship between Solina and Thorin is frustrating, just get together already lol. And all the revelations about Skyla... very interesting and I look forward to what that means going forward. There's so much corruption and betrayal that it's hard to know who to trust.

Favorite quote:
"My body had gone zombie, and coffee was the braaains it craved." – Solina

Molten Dusk – 5
That was such a fun ride! Solina is one of my favorite female characters. She’s not afraid to admit fear but she’s not willing to let it rule her life either. She stands up for what she believes in and won’t back down. Such a great ending! As much as I hate that this series is over I absolutely loved reading it! Other than a few spots of “down time” it was nonstop action and adventure with a bit of romance (finally)near the end. If you’re looking for a modern Norse tale then look no more.

The Norse Chronicles is the Omnibus edition containing all three books in this series (Midnight Burning, Arctic Dawn, and Molten Dusk) by Karissa Laurel.

I had my doubts during Midnight Burning, the first book of this trilogy, because it seemed like the characters were following all the old PNR/UF clichés of the gutsy woman whose capability is a façade and would die without the needy, controlling creepopath who’s decided to own her. Despite my doubts, I kept reading because this book was addictive and Laurel proved me wrong.

Solina is wily and while she’s certainly out of depth at times, she’s self-sufficient and focused on her goal to discover who murdered her brother. She realises she can’t do it on her own either, and teams up with Skyla, a former marine who was close to Mani.

This is a slow-burn romance and there is a love triangle of sorts in that Solina has two romance options in Val and Thorin, but Val’s clinginess is a turn-off for Solina (Yay for smart UF heroines) and Thorin tends to be prickly, cold, and defensive. Character development is gradual but steady. You reach a certain point where you just realise that these people aren’t quite the same as they were a few hundred pages ago. This influences the love triangle too, which continues through book two until it closes with a major plot twist and a clear winner in the hot, supernatural, romantic interest department.

Each of the three books in this omnibus is satisfying to read on its own, but it’s also great for a binge read. I read this with borderline fanaticism for a week and it was exactly the sort of escapist UF I needed.

The Norse Chronicles isn’t too heavy on mythology. Readers familiar with the Norse myths will appreciate Laurel’s twists on the familiar myths and deities while those who know little about this topic won’t be overwhelmed by it.

Laurel’s Norse Chronicles omnibus is a bingeworthy Urban Fantasy with a slow-burn romance to melt for.

The Norse Chronicles by Karissa Laurel is a paranormal book series that was out of this world good. I tend to struggle with some paranormal stories yet even though a few pets were a tad over my head I never really felt lost, more impressed than anything.

Midnight Burning is the first book in the series and I really loved meeting Solina. She recently lost her brother Mani and has to go to Alaska to pack up his belongings. While there she meets some of his friends and start to feel like there was more to his death than people are saying. Solina is determined to find out the truth and his friends are the way to that truth. Absolutely loved Skyla, Thorin and Val, they bring an intensity to the story that had me engaged right from the start.

Book two, Arctic Dawn really pulled me in. In book one Solina goes through an epic journey that leaves her running for her life and unsure of what the future holds. With her best friend Skyla missing and the chaos that is good vs evil consuming Solina she chooses to fight. With her friends at her side she leaps into the Fray and a battle for her life and the fate of the world. What really gets me going however in the story is not just the suspense but the sexy Gods that via for Solina’s attention. Damn this book is full of intense story and twists that keep you guessing.

Book three, the final book in the Norse Chronicles was everything I wanted and more. Molten Dusk truly is epic in its writing and closure. With Solina becoming stronger and wiser throughout the series I find myself feeling all her emotions. She is tested over and over throughout this book and her strengths outweigh her weakness. Solina has such an intense need to survive and save the world that when met with betrayal and lose you want to scream for her. It takes every one of her friends to play their role to defeat the threat against them.

The Norse Chronicles really was a different paranormal read for me but it was brilliantly written. I loved and laughed as well as screamed and yelled at times but overall I didn’t want it to end. Very well done.

The Norse Chronicles brings together books 1-3, Midnight Burning, Arctic Dawn and Molten Dusk all into one volume. The is also a Prequel novella called Moonlight Falling, which covers Mani trying to find answers to shadows following him and ice in his footsteps. Then his journey and work in Alaska and budding romance with a woman called Skyla. It’s a shame that this book is not part of the Norse Chronicles.

Solina Mundy has worked in her parent’s bakery for years, while her twin brother, Mani, had gone to Alaska to work as a wilderness guide some three years ago, leaving her as her parent’s only help. The family get news of Mani’s death, although Solina already knew as she had a nightmare dream of the exact moment of her twin brother’s death and how he died. Somehow he had been killed by a wolf. She eventually decides she has to go and find out more about his death.

She travels to Alaska and meets Mani’s friends and work colleagues, Val, Skyla, Hugh and others, as well as his boss Thorin. They seem to know more than they will tell her. Thorin is a very intimidating and extremely handsome man, who doesn’t seem to let loose at all. Val is also handsome but quite a player. Solina feels closest to him as he had emailed her often and was her brother’s best friend. Skyla is the only one that seems to want to help her in any way.

It soon turns into a story from Norse mythology, with many of the people involved, coming to try and kill Solina. She is discovering she has a new power, linked to her through her ancestors, as was her twin brother. She has to learn how to control this new power and rely on Mani’s friends to keep her safe and prevent the end of the world as she knows it.

The use of her new powers leads to a stellar occurrence and she disappears for a month before reappearing and having to recuperate, not knowing what has happened to her and where she has been. But Skyla is also missing and she needs to find her and the others. She knows she can’t last long on her own, Skoll is hunting her and if he kills her then Ragnarok will happen all over again.

Long lost weapons must be uncovered and allies joined together. An Army of stone warriors is about to be unleashed. Her hunt for Skoll, the mythical wolf that is destined to kill her, has led to many twists and unexpected paths. Nothing goes as planned for Solina and her friends and a betrayal from someone close is a hard hit to take.

Solina gets closer to Thorin, she trusts him with her life, he is immortal and has pledged to help her kill Skoll. Unfortunately, what they think of their friends and family safety is never quite right. Someone is playing the game better than them. The war is not being played as before, events are taking place in a different order and the players from other sides are changing what they do. Fate is no longer in control.

This is a very long, but oh so interesting book, combining all three books in one. Bringing a modern twist on the stories and characters from ancient Norse mythology and bringing into the twentieth century. I started this book one evening and practically didn’t stop until I finished it the next day. It holds your interest, the characters are complex and double sided, old and modern both make up part of the characters beings.

I loved this book and wish the prequel had been included in the chronicle edition. Ancient Gods trying to adapt to living as part of the modern world and the lifetimes of experience they bring to the tale, but also all the superiority they believe they have over mere mortals, gives the tale an edge. I will certainly look out for some more books by this author.

I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I am so glad I did, it is a fantastic and gripping set of books all in one. I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I am a really big fan of urban fantasy and this series is a really good example of urban fantasy done right. Laurel does a really good job and integrating the Norse mythos into the book. This book allows people that really don't have any knowledge of the mythos to come into the series and not feel left out. Since the main character is like that, there are a lot of explanations throughout the book to fill in the main character

The plot of this book is really interesting and it used all of the characters to expand on the story. The overarching storyline was handled very well, with the little storylines tying into the theme of the books. I enjoyed how the character development was very important to the overall story, which pushed the entire story forward.

The characters were developed in just the right way to be interesting, however, some of the plot twists were a little out of nowhere. I felt like the character Helen needed a little more build up to her, as she is the main enemy during the entirety of the book. I enjoy books that give us a lot of background to the main antagonist, and I felt like that was lacking in this book. Thorin, Solina and Skyla were the characters that were built up the most in this book series. They had the most backstory and character development, however, that might be because they were the characters that were seen the most by the reader.

Overall, this was an excellent book series. The ending was a little out of nowhere, however, it was a really fun read.

I received a complimentary copy of the trilogy for my honest review.

The Norse Chronicles are of strong and admirable characters. Can’t say people because I’m not sure if Gods, Wolves, Raven fall in that category.

Solina and Thorin have to take many chances on each other while following their hearts.
Their priorities are often conflicting and that could be fatal.
Great story!

Received from Author

The Norse Chronicle is an Omnibus edition of three books. Although it’s long, the story is so captivating that I didn’t even notice it. :) It's perfect mixture of modern world with mythical world of Norse Gods.

Ragnarok already accured and killed most of the Aesir, ones that are left are living more or less peacefully with humans. After decades of peace, there is threat of new Ragnarok. There is mystery to be solved, different creatures and Gods, amazing friendship, romance and alliances forming.

Loved:

Thorin. He came across such a creep in the beginning of the story. As we got to know him bit by bit, I started to like him and respect him. Not only is he one of the most powerful being in the story, he is such a rock for Solina.

Solina. My favourite part about her, was her development. She wasn’t bad-ass, or strong from the start. She was scared and confused and not very sure about her self. As the story continues, we could see her growing into herself, gaining confidence, developing her powers, redeeming past mistakes and becoming on the strongest characters…ever. :)

Mythology. Usually, I hate stories that go to far from original mythology, but this take on Norse gods, was just … perfect. The author brought modern times and sense of realism into mythology and made it her own. And I loved reading about the world(s) created.

Val. Not to give too much away, but he was one of my favourite characters in the story. I like him in the beginning, hate him in the middle and absolutely loved him in the end. HE is just something else. :))

Didn’t like:

All father. He was to wimpy for my taste and not to all-fathery. However I did love the romance of his reincarnating wife
Valkyries. Just no. (not hating all, just select few :))

It’s such a complex story. Highly recommend to anyone who loves mythology. :)

The first book I finished on the 30th of November.........
The Norse Chronicles was so good that once I started reading it I couldn’t stop
I read all of them before I realized that they were separate books so I’m reviewing them as one.....
This story had a hodgepodge of Norse mythology all intertwining with modern day it had nothing to do with marvel version of the Norse mythologies but the Norse mythologies themselves.
It had more to do with the descendants of the gods then the gods themselves
By this I mean the children of the gods and the grandchildren.
There was one original god and his mate that keeps getting reincarnated time and time again.
The descendants of the Valkyries
The wolves
Odin’s ravens thought and memory
I hated that Loki’s descendants were the villains of the story, I hate how they were portrayed. Even though I felt sorry for them they really weren’t nice people.
Favourite character Thorin
Least favourite Bauldr
I highly recommend these books
