Understanding Media Culture

Rate this book
This refreshingly different introduction to media studies offers an understanding of the mass madia which is critical but which does not deny the pleasures they offer. Reflecting the trends of today's media and cultural studies courses, it introduces students both to social scientific
approaches and those of the humanities and aesthetics.

I skimmed and skipped some chapters (only reading what was relevant to my dissertation research). My favourite was 'Identity: the media and our understanding of ourselves'. The chapter explored some really interesting topics, including why we see ourselves in characters. I also enjoyed a later chapter which highlighted the importance of the storyteller, touching on Roland Barthes' Death of the Author.
