Following the death of the beloved aunt who raised her as her own, Honor McCall flees the only home she has ever known to escape her uncle's unwelcome attentions. Her penniless flight into the unknown sets off a series of events that will lead the young lady to a new town, a job with caring employers, new friends, and possibly even a chance at love. Most importantly, the path she chooses - while fraught with danger, deceit and heartache - ultimately brings her face to face with the God she has known only as a distant deity, to be feared and revered. That He might truly care about Honor McCall is a new concept to the girl, and one her distrustful heart has some trouble accepting - especially since she can't imagine herself ever forgiving the uncle she fears and detests. She's not exactly the picture of a perfect pastor's wife ... can the handsome minister she falls for ever love someone with a past like Honor's?
Winter Pearl is far and away the most captivating historical romance I've read in a very long time. Molly Noble Bull's writing style is warm and real, and her true-to-life characters move across the pages almost visually. The story is tightly woven, and includes rich, accurate details of its historical era.
This page-turner is a pearl of a tale, and the author strung each literary bead with precision and care. A must-read!
Honor Rose McCall's parents died when she was just 3 years old. As a result she was sent to live with her maiden aunt Harriet. Everything was fine until Harriet married Lucas who became a mean drunk. When Honor was 19 her aunt died and Lucas told her she had to marry him the next morning. Honor did not want this so she ran away and stole money from the church collection plate to buy a ticket away from her uncle and the only home she had known. While on the stage it is held up by robbers and they hit Honor on the head with a gun because she was trying to hide money in her dress sleeve. The next thing she remembers is waking up in a strange bed. She finds out that she is in a boarding house.
I really enjoyed this book. Molly Noble Bull illustrates the power of forgiveness and salvation in a lonely girl's life.
Honor flees her home when her aunt dies and her uncle decides to 'have' her. She steals money from a church collection plate to buy a stagecoach ticket. A young minister rescues Honor, finds her a place to stay and a job, and Honor slowly begins to learn about salvation and the things of the Lord.
Just as things seem to be coming right for Honor, and she is making progress toward saving enough money to pay back what she stole, her uncle reappears, and Honor has to choose between forgiving and helping him, or fleeing once more.
Girl runs from mean uncle, ends up with preacher's family. Finds religion and is "Saved" then she gets engaged and they all live happily ever after- even the bad guy.
From the first of the book it was clear how it would end- I only finished because I had nothing else to read here.
Congrats Winter pearl, you've gotten my first ever one star rating.

Can't believe I waited so long to find this book. Another event-filled novel by Molly Noble Bull. The many exciting plot twists kept me up late and rushing to pick it up again the next day. Great characters, engaging story, and lots of opportunities to anticipate the next dramatic event.
