At Home with Dyslexia: A Parent’s Guide to Supporting Your Child

Rate this book
'Probably the very best place to go if you need accessible, user-friendly information, and a whole plethora of sound, practical guidance about how to help a child with dyslexia, is Sascha's fascinating and insightful book' - The Sunday Independent (Ireland)

This book will empower parents by giving them the tools and strategies to deal with dyslexia, making them confident and knowledgeable in the process.
It offers:
- a guidebook that is visually appealing, including bullet points, illustrations and short chapters, making it an easy to follow reference book for the busy (and often dyslexic) parent;
- practical and emotional support at home from primary to secondary school years, as well as how to deal with school and the education system;
- chapters that can be dipped into for useful day to day advice and tools to help at home , and for overall encouragement and reassurance;
- parents and children sharing their personal experiences and advice in their personal accounts - the challenges of dyslexia, possible solutions and successes are openly discussed and woven throughout the chapters, giving the guide an authentic voice.

Central to this guide is language of acceptance and celebration, emphasising a learning 'difference' rather than a 'disability', and a genuine encouragement of dyslexic abilities and strengths.

I am an author and dyslexia specialist supporting people with dyslexia for over 20 years. I have a well-established private practice, and an approach that encourages the strengths and abilities of the dyslexic individual.

My first book 'At Home with Dyslexia: A Parent’s Guide to Supporting your Child', published in 2018 by Little, Brown Book Group, is a dyslexia-friendly practical guide for parents. It encourages parents to be advocates for their dyslexic child, helping them to give practical and emotional support for the entirety of their child’s school years.

My second book 'At School with Dyslexia: A Study Guide for Dyslexic Learners' came out in September 2024. This book gives dyslexic students the tools and strategies to thrive in school, by encouraging their creative strengths and innovative ways of seeing and learning. It includes QR code downloads for handy resources, and a Foreword by Dylan Llewellyn, who played James in 'Derry Girls'.

My main concern is dyslexia in secondary school and my aim is that this will be the first study guide to genuinely appeal to the dyslexic reader – with readable font, short paragraphs, plenty of spacing and bullet points, as well as illustrations by Danielle Sheehy. To add to the authenticity of this guide, fellow dyslexic students share their tips and advice, their heartfelt experiences and their humour in each chapter.

I am originally from Cambridge and live in Cork in the Republic of Ireland (I only came to Cork for the summer, and that was in 1998!) I have a blog for dyslexic students hosted on a study skills website and have been involved in various projects relating to dyslexia, including podcasts, documentaries, panel discussions and exhibitions.

An excellent practical book, full of tips on how to be a an advocate and support for/to your dyslexic child, helping them to find learning strategies.
A confidence-inspiring book that celebrates the different abilities of a dyslexic person: it is a world away from books that treat it as a disability.

This book is an excellent practical guide for parents, teachers and adults with dyslexia. It is well structured and the illustrations reflect the book's content. As a dyslexic adult, it's a book that should be read by employers, HR managers etc

This is a well laid out guideline for anyone looking to understand dyslexia but is best suited for those new to the arena. Too often guides on learning differences can be overwhelming and hyperfocused on weaknesses, but At Home with Dyslexia focuses on the positive and providing at home supports and tips that doable.
I liked that it broke down supports between primary and secondary grades, which makes this a nice addition to any home library, but there is a fair amount of repetition of tips and suggestions. The most important takeaway from this book is that encouragement, love, and support of your student (and really all students) is a great foundation for learning.

This text offers explanations, definitions, advice, and lists of resources in accessible language and manageable segments that don't overwhelm laypeople. Each chapter breaks down the information as applicable to early learners, middle schoolers, and teens. The assorted quotes from students and parents personalize this examination of the challenges and triumphs of identifying and addressing dyslexia. It's a handy reference manual that encourages readers as much as it educates. U.S. English speakers will notice the variation in U.K. English used doesn't alter or impede comprehension.

I believe this book best serves those with no knowledge, but want to know all about it to educate themselves and those parents with dyslexic children in junior school. For me with a daughter in first year seniors it helped validate what we were already doing and gave us a couple of points. I found the book constantly repeating itself which was a little frustrating. I definitely recommend this book.
