Can you face the consequences of cheating the Fates?
Alexander the Great journeys to India, where he and Ashley are welcomed with feasts and treachery.
With their son, Paul, being worshiped as the Son of the Moon, and Alexander’s looming death, Ashley considers the how to save them and whether she dares to cheat Fate?
Jennifer Macaire lives in France with her husband, three children, & various dogs & horses. She loves cooking, eating French chocolate, growing herbs and flowering plants on her balcony, and playing golf. She grew up in upstate New York, Samoa, and the Virgin Islands. She graduated from St. Peter and Paul high school in St. Thomas and moved to NYC where she modeled for five years for Elite. She went to France and met her husband at the polo club. All that is true. But she mostly likes to make up stories.
Son of the Moon is the third book in the Time for Alexander series. It is important that you read these books in order and they are a continuous story, this one beginning where the last has ended. Alexander has veered off his original course of heading to India, to travel to the Sacred Valley. His and Ashley's son, Paul, is supposed to be there and they finally arrive to find him safe. Will he be going with them? After leaving the Sacred Valley, they finally meet up with the rest of Alexander's army in India where they find out that Roxanne, another of Alexander's wives, is waiting for them. There is no love lost between her and Ashley and Ashley does not trust her at all. Of course, Alexander is in for another battle.
This historical fiction book is based on actual events, with a lot of fiction thrown in. There is a lot of action, both in war and in the bedroom, or bathhouse, or river etc. I do love the relationship that Ashley and Alexander have, although it would never fly in today's society. Relationships in 300 BC are very open and accepted, with the sharing of lovers, unbridled nudity, fully accepted and open same-sex relationships and a lot of sexual activity. The story is told from Ashley's POV and it often compared to her time (she is from our future) which is a bit scary. Alexander is an emotional, caring hero with flaws. I love the depiction of his army, which is more like a traveling city. As he continues to explore the world, more people join his "family" so that he has soldiers, families, doctors, scribes, teachers, cooks and all sorts of others to make this group work. Although battles are described, they are quick and not detailed as the emphasis is on the developing human relationships and the goal to spread Greek civilization and democracy. The writing flows well and is well paced. It is easy to read this book in one sitting, and I found myself quickly reading to see what was going to happen to all the characters I have gotten to know in the previous stories. Of course, Ashley has some idea of what is going to happen, coming from the future and having studied Alexander the Great, but she doesn't know exactly when things will happen. She also has to be very careful that she doesn't change the course of history. If you love historical fiction mixed with alternate history and events, then you’ll enjoy this series. I received a copy of this book from Rachel's Random Resources upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
I love this series. Son of the Moon is the third novel in the Time for Alexander series and picks up right after the second book ends. It's important to read these books in order. The events in the previous two need to be known to understand and enjoy this novel.
Jennifer Macaire has written a truly unique series and I could not wait to get my hands on this one. Alexander and Ashley are in India and Ashley is faced with choices to try to save Alexander and her son, Paul. I love the character development that has gone on from the beginning of this series. I'm very attached to Ashley and Alexander and I love that they continue to grow on me.
The historical feel to this novel is brilliant. I really love the setting and the plot. I'm definitely a fan of Jennifer Macaire and will pick up anything she puts out from here on out.
Highly recommended!
*I received a copy of this book as part of a blog tour with Rachel's Random Resources. All opinions are my own.*
Macaire's Alexander series is so well done that I really find it hard to categorize. If you like romance novels, there's plenty of that. Historical? You can be sure to get a nice refresher course. Erotica? I have to say steam rises off some of these pages! The point is, it doesn't matter what genre you like, you're going to find such a good read, such fun and humor, such really competent writing that you will simply reach for the next book, as soon as you finish this one. (and don't forget the ones before this! ) She's one of those authors that I'd love to meet and talk books over lunch!
This is the third book of The Time for Alexander Series. The author has created another masterful and enthralling story. There is no let up in the beautiful writing, which showcases the grace and vitality of the times, and the powerful relationships. We continue our intimate, upfront and personal journey with Alexander, with his wife Ashley as our guide and storyteller. The previous book described the long journey of Alexander and his army. Now, Alexander’s mighty force heads to India, a country Alexander has longed to see.
The author fluidly moves from grand tales of intense battles, and treacherous plots, to the everyday life of friends and family in a tent, 3000 years ago.
Son of the Moon solves a pressing problem that has grieved Ashley and Alexander, a storyline that began in the earlier books. This is a big part of the ongoing story that I know myself and other readers have been waiting for. This book also begins to show Ashley and Alexander trying to solve a future problem.
The world is changing from a time when gods and the fates controlled everything to a time when men begin to realize they can create their own destiny. Alexander is the face of the future. And Ashley is from the future.
Son of the Moon is a satisfying read for anyone who loves historical fiction with strong and passionate characters. I have enjoyed the detail of the previous two books in the series, and this book was an exciting and satisfying read. Like the earlier books, Ashley and Alexander continue to develop their unique soul-bond and as part of their intimacy, they share their physical love with each other frequently.
I highly recommend his book and encourage readers who haven’t read the first two books to get started!
Thanks to the author and Rachel’s Random Resources for a review copy. This is my honest review.
Son of the Moon by author Jennifer Macaire is the third book in the Time for Alexander series. I have read and reviewed the previous book – Legends of Persia on this blog, if you want to check that out, click here.
In this book, the story continues from where it was paused last and the adventure with Alexander continues.
Summary
Alexander reaches the sacred valley along with Ashley to find Paul. But is he successful? Ashley has to make a very difficult decision. As the journey continues forward to the Indus river, Roxanne joins them and Ashley is not too happy about it. Alexander engages in the epic battle with Porus and the result is catastrophic.
All the while Ashley knows that his end is nearing and when Alex is fatally wounded in the battle, Ashley’s only resort is to pray he lives on.
What I Liked
Son of the Moon is the next installment in the series. The writing style is impressive, as was with the previous book. So much so that I hadn’t realized I had reached the end of the book when I did. Not one dull moment in the story.
The flow of the story is so smooth that I just got carried away. As I had mentioned in my previous review, the emotional Alexander is what makes him human. Here too, it is evident and that’s what makes this read so touching and relatable.
What I Did Not Like
I don’t think I disliked anything in the book.
Other Details
Son of the Moon is not a standalone, so one must begin from the beginning. I will be reviewing the next book too, so watch this space for the upcoming review.
Would I Recommend It?
Yes, yes and yes! I was hooked on right from the start. It is an interesting and exciting historical read that is brilliantly written. If you’re interested in such books, then you should definitely pick this up.
Son of the Moon by Jennifer Macaire is the third book in the Time for Alexander series, and continues from Legends of Persia.
Alexander finally reaches the sacred valley with Ashley to try to find their son, Paul. But is he be successful?
Roxanne joins the party, but Ashley is not very happy about this, then Alexander has another battle, but this doesn’t end well. Ashley is praying he survives.
This is full of action and marvellous characters, The ever ‘modest’ Alexander and the loving Ashley keep your attention throughout. The writing just flows so well you get caught up in the story, an absolute credit to Jennifer Macaire’s wonderfully immersive writing. If you love historical fiction, then you’ll adore this.
Thank you to Rachel’s Random Resources for the opportunity to participate in this blog tour and for the promotional materials and a free copy of the ebook. This is my honest, unbiased review.
This is the third in the Time for Alexander series and I was really happy to catch up with Ashley and Alexander again. You can read my reviews for the first two books, The Road to Alexander and Legends of Persia.
Although this is part of an ongoing series, it can also be read as a stand alone, although I recommend starting with Book One.
This book sees the couple concentrating on their son and his ‘powers’, hence the title of the book. The author has successfully succeeded in making Ashley and Alexander a believable couple and some of the things in this book, highlight this.
Writing Style The first thing I want to say is that it seems Jennifer has either gotten over those overly direct sentences, or she got a new editor for this book that managed to get rid of almost all of those annoying, jarring sentences. YAY!
That left me being able to focus more on the story rather than feeling like I was thrown out of it because of a string of short sentences that just felt weird to read.
Overall, I feel like there’s a maturity to Jennifer’s writing that hasn’t quite been there with the first two books. And I’m loving it. It feels like the story is more cohesive and purposeful rather than a string of great ideas and plot points strung together.
That doesn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy the first two books. It means that I found this book much easier to engage with which meant I could enjoy it much easier and quicker.
Initial Thoughts I’m struggling to remember what exactly happened at the start, but I remember that I was a little on edge wondering if Ashley and Alexander would find their son. Given there are 7 books in the series I wasn’t sure if this quest was meant to span all those books or whether there’d be more to their story if they found him.
After a harsh climb up a mountain pass, they were met by an old man who welcomed them but seemed to be delaying and delaying them seeing their sun. Which of course made me wonder if their son was even still there or had yet again been stolen away from them.
What they discovered was certainly not what they, or me, were expecting which brought about another question. What were they going to do now?
And that’s what drove the rest of the books story.
Final Thoughts As usual, I finished this book dying for the next book. Which makes me think, if anyone wants to know what they should ever gift me (in case you were wondering), get me this series with matching covers in paperback. Coz this is a series I will come back to again in the future (I can already tell) which mean’s I want it in my burgeoning library for proud display.
I’ve mentioned already that I really engaged with this book better than the first book. I loved the battles, I loved that Ashley sacrificed for love and I love that she’s willing to ask for what she really wants. A full life with Alexander where they can live in peace without the people from the future killing them and erasing them from history.
This really brought me back to the start of the first book which made me wonder if this was a clue as to what was happening then. Maybe, maybe not. I’ll have to wait to find out.
I treated myself to a copy of Children in the Morning for a Christmas present and was not disappointed. Like Jennifer's two previous novels in the series, I found the characters believable and their relationships well developed. Alexander is a passionate hero with human failings just as I had always envisioned him and I enjoy the depiction of this unusual "family" group that has grown up around him during his efforts to explore the edges of the known world. Although battles are described, the emphasis is on the developing human relationships that I find as important to history (even alternate history) as events.
In this installment, Alexander and Ashley are in India and they experience the culture's exotic combination of beauty, courage, and treachery as they struggle through the monsoons, confront the formidable war elephants of Porus, and outwit brutal Brahmin rebels. Ashley must also face the reality of Alexander's looming death and consider the possibilities and consequences of cheating fate.
